How often do you use them to watch a movie/tv show or a video game?

I almost always use them for fear of someone being obnoxious and not letting me hear what someone has to say, or when the characters downright whisper.
If it says inaudible then whatever they might have said has no meaning to me and a waste.

For movies I usually use subtitles, more out of habit than actually needing them. For Japanese, Chinese, French etc movies naturally I do use subtitles. In games only if I have problems hearing what people say (not very often).

If I'm playing on the PS3, which is in the living room, I have to use subtitles since my family likes being loud. I don't use them in my room though.

GLuB watches a lot Anime and Foreign Film Subtitles are nice to have. For game subtitles are good to have cause GLuB tends to have the volume on low.

hard for the caption writers to keep up though... i should probably start paying/feeding them

My family has some serious issues with any noise louder than a mouse fart so more often than not I have subtitles on and/or headphones on...

If it's in English, I may use English subtitles if I find it hard to follow. If I don't know the language, then Swedish as I'm more used to it due to television. But generally I want to avoid subtitles because I end up reading them subconsciously and missing out on the conversation.

I usually use subtitles on DVDs so I don't miss anything, and I sometimes do them for video games but I find them immersion breaking, so rarely now.

I only have subtitles if it's a foreign language film really, and sometimes on games if I can't be bothered to turn them off yet.

When I watch movies that uses a language that I'm familiar with, never.

On games I tend to enable subtitles, for the exact same reason as you, OP. And even when I can hear the characters clearly, and subtitles are enabled, I STILL look at the subtitles.

I hate subtitles, but on the other hand, I can't stop using them...

Usually when I'm playing a game (Gears is an examply) I'm listening to music. Emery mostly. But I like to know what their saying, so i always put subtitles on.

I mostly use subtitles when I'm watching a foreign film, usually because the English dub is either horrible or the voices don't fit the characters (if that makes any sense at all). Other than that, I don;t use them that often.

For foreign language films, yes, I use subtitles, and I tend to have them on in games as well for some inexpliable reason, but that's about it. I don't generally like or need them in films, so I don't turn them on.

sorry to brag, but i'm actually very good at english (i'm swedish), so i don't use subtitles on any english movies. on the other hand when i watch a movie in any other language, except swedish, i have sub.
