See this might sound gay but...
I think Mario would do best on 360 or Wii.
Imagine...Mario in HD.
But this is not a perfect world...*sigh*
Before you consider this, take a good hard look at Mario in all his high definition goodness

The only logical step forward is for Mario to become a Dr.Who type character .... or to face the Great Old Ones

A HD Wii may come out in the far flung future, so, you might have your wishes satisfied.
(Really though, what's so great about HD? I don't see what's so good about it.)

Ah, time travel always allows for deep plots, and isn't that something we should wish for with Mario? Who are the Great Old Ones?

They could always travel the Sonic route and just give him a sword.
And then have him duel to the death with Link while he's at it.

This does raise an interesting question: How exactly would Nintendo be able to top Super Mario Galaxy? Right now, it's the absolute height of 3D platforming. I'd think to be able to out do SMG would be to completely redefine gaming as it is, much like outdoing OoT.

I'd like to see three things:

Epic Mario - we're talking more epic, less kiddy. Let's see something Zelda-like, but for Mario. A huge, long story, side-quests - keep it cartoony if you want (Okami has proven cartoony and epic goes together) or make it a little more modern. And all in a persistent world - not individual worlds accessed from a central hub. I want an epic storyline, twists, side quests.

Or, I'd like to see something with time travel, where Mario either assumes the roles of ancient Marios of time past (i.e., his ascendants), saving ancient Peaches of long lost ages (her ascendants) or he just is himself travelling through time and saving Peach in a variety of ages. We'll see Caveman Mario, Roman Legion Mario, Medieval Mario, Swashbuckling Renaissance Mario - maybe even Futuristic Mario!

Or Mario Brothers: Origins. How did Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser get into this never-ending battle? What made Bowser start kidnapping? Why is Peach hot property? What were the Mario Brothers doing and how did they get dragged into it?

What do you think?

No, maybe, and no.

You have to remember that Mario is a simple, family-friendly franchise, first and foremost. That's why the first and third idea could never work. The second could make for a decent platformer, provided it kept the story simple and the settings wacky.

And if you wanna be anal about it, the third game was already made. It's called Yoshi's Island.

Mario's explored space now. How about time? I'm not really one to support another Mario game but I think a game where Mario collides with a Timesplitter's-esque universe would be pretty cool.

I should release a game where princess Peach actually puts up for Mario... I'd get a million sales off nerds alone...

Okay, so Mario explores time/the universe. THEN what? You're just delaying the real issue. How will the Mario series continue? Look at Sonic and then tell me, with a straight face, that Mario's not headed his way.

Heh. A TARDIS Mushroom, to take you to the level in a different era, would be great with this idea. The Great Old Ones aren't so great, though. I mean, come on:

"It's-a-me, Mario-o-o-OH MY GOD, IT'S A GIANT WITH A BLOOPER FOR A HEAD! WHAT THE HELL HAS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS IN SPACE?!?" Okay, I guess that wouldn't be so bad. I like the Doctor better though.

Some ideas for that one: The Rose, a fire flower that summons Peach in a flash of blue light to stomp on enemies and carry around a kick-ass gun; CyberToads, who upgrade the enemy rather than stomp them; And DaleKoopas. "SUBMIT TO THE WILL OF LORD BOWVROS OR BE EXTERMINATED!" Yeah, I'd be able to get behind that game...

What you appear to not take into account is that Mario doesn't always have to be family friendly. You're assuming that Nintendo, should they make such games, would plan to take the ideas and make them entirely family friendly which likely would not work. Just as turning Zelda into a wacky cartoonish Mario-like game would not work if they kept it epic.

All my ideas would work well, provided the Big N actually made the game appropriate to the proposal. Actually, given the Mario fanbase alone, the games changed to my proposals would sell well, let alone the intrigue-factor for other gamers and those that would buy it for the massive overhaul alone.
