I realize that the super Nintendo came out, oh 16 - 17 years ago, but it is one of the best systems ever by Nintendo. It even came bundled with the best game ever by Nintendo: Super Mario World, with the first Ridable Yoshi. Plus the cape, I always wondered why in super Mario 3, a damn tail gave you the ability to fly and I never will, But the cape making you fly is awesome. But all of the worlds are great to play, the graphics are awesome (despite being 16 bits) and overall this was the franchise that put Nintendo on top after all these years. After all what is a Nintendo system without a Mario game but a brick? Plus, you even got bonus worlds and if you beat them you got something special, I haven't figured that out yet cause I haven't beaten the last two star worlds on the star road yet but it sounds gnarly (Hey! thats the name of a level on the star road!)

I got this game after seeing it basically get what I think was second place in a "(Seriously now) what is the greatest game ever?" thread. Seemed like the standard Mario doldrums to me. Pleasant music and moderately fun, but not that fun. I really think that there is a huge bias toward it because it was the first game a lot of people ever owned. I don't see how it's so much better than any other mario game, and I don't see what's so good about mario games anyway. Perhaps someone could tell me?

You have to remember the context. It seems like the standard Mario doldrums now, but when it was released, it was a defining game for the franchise.

With regard to the review, it's difficult to offer any feedback as there isn't a lot there. Next time, well, how do I put this? Next time, write a review.

Best of the 2-D Mario games. Yoshi's Island was fun and had a unique style, but just wasn't the same. With a little practice, I'll bet I can sail across an entire level just like before.

Oh, and New Super Mario Land can go f*** itself. I'm still upset about the purchase.

You weren't there at the beginning,
You don't know how good it was, how important,
This is it for you,
This jumped up, firework display of a toy advert!

It was a great game, my second favariote mario game only to yoshi's island, if you count that. It was one of the last mario games before they became bad (going 3-d) IMO.

Seriously? You don't like Mario 64? I thought it was law that you had to...

How? it used precisely the same layout and gameplay as SMB3. Riding Yoshi added a really, really small amount to it and that was it. And being influential within a franchise is not that big a deal.

I didn't care much for it neither.

But forever I will cherish SNES SMW.

I like it. it's fun, it's simple enough to play it immediately but difficult enough to be challenging. It has a lot of secret levels, which lengthens gameplay, and a memorable soundtrack.

I think that the all the marios have been pretty good (with the exception of SM2, go ahead, hate me) even the 3-D ones keep that general mario-like feel that I love, playing games like galaxy and paper mario help get me away from the realism and seriousness in next gen titles and appreciate what fun can come from simplicity. (this is directed at daymo, apparently my "quote" button doesnt work, lol)

regardless of it being Nintendo's flagship franchise and being the game many people remeber from childhood, SM64 is probably my all-time favourite game and i loved the combination of the elements of the 2d games and the newer 3d ones in New Super Mario Bros. Even if it hadn't been one of the first games that made people think gaming could be a proper entertainment industry in it's own right, a lot of the mario games would be loved just the same.

That's a very good point actually. I suppose the real point that I was making is that it doesn't really hold up now, but when it was released it was amazing.

The greatest mario game ever made. I played it for a few hours on acid once in high school. I kept playing the special world level where bullet bills come from all four sides of the screen. I had to stop playing after a while because I wasn't getting anywhere, and I was getting unreasonably concerned about Luigi's well being. good times.

Coming from a gaming background of a speccy 46k+ then a master system and finally the SNES Mario World was simply amazing. It took everything that was good about mario 3 and took it further. The puzzles the sounds and level design were for me 'the next level' of platform gaming at the time and to date some of the best gameplay I have found in any game mario or otherwise.

Simply put mario64 was the evolution of the franchise but marioworld is still the benchmark.

Whyyyyyyyy? They're still just deriving from themselves. They're well made platformers, but there are others that are pretty much as good. In the long term, the Mario games just seem so... empty.

You've got to put this into a historical context. Yeah, it's the same basic level setup & power-ups, but in Super Mario World they made it smooth to the point of baby bottoms. They gave you a huge amount of variety & tactics with the colored Yoshi's. The cape was way more interesting (and depending on your skill, useful) than the Raccoon suit. You could also travel the whole map as a coherent world rather than some episodic exchange. Hell, you could make the entire map switch to Fall colors if you unlocked enough content.

I dunno, it's like the difference between the original Zelda and 'A Link to the Past'. The rough concept was down in SMB3. In Super Mario World, they perfected it.

Super Mario World is a game I continue to play to this day. I bought my Gameboy SP specifically for it. Something about it is just fun. It does everything I want it to do for a game of that era. There's not much else to discuss about it.
