I still only see the thing as mediocre, and though designed with skill that L.B. Jeffries has just enlightened me to, not historical or "great". It's fun, but the world, despite what Yahtzee tells you, is filled with fun games.

Man, I've been playing this lately on my emulator and it's still as good as I remember, if not better.

What happened to games like this? I know making a 2D platformer now would be taking a backwards step into a desert we've long since left behind, but I think we dropped our water skins back there somewhere. Games these days just seem to be missing something. I was already a veteran gamer when I first played Super Mario World, but I was still 100% satisfied with it. I haven't played something that fulfilling in years.

Maybe I've become harder to please. I don't know....

I think I'm getting old....

I used to rock at Super Mario World when i was a kid, I'd just fly through each level without a problem. Now when I play this on my emulator I suck freaking turkey. Maybe I should get a controller.

Yea this was the best game for snes, that and Chrono Trigger. Though my favorite game was TMNT Tournament Fighters (I know, I'm lame).

They're well made platformers, but there are others that are pretty much as good. In the long term, the Mario games just seem so... empty.
You just said it yourself. You can't bring yourself to say that there are others that are better, merely 'pretty much as good'.

What makes Mario platformers good are the exceptional level design and perfectly balanced controls. That's why people still rave about Mario games because it is so rare to find that in games these days.

Exactly. A friend of mine says his favourite platformers are DK64 and banjo kazooie, niether of which i feel come close to the simple, yet deep world of SM64

what floored me about Super Mario World was the attention to detail in the control schemes of each outfit. each one felt solid and unique, lesser game companies would have been more than happy to create entirely different platform games with any of those outfits and control ideas.

the uniqueness of the outfits also allowed for entirely different approaches to how levels were played, and this

your "reviews" are really short and arent really reviews. more like previews or summmaries with your opinions popped in.
