Items on except for the smash ball. I find it annoying when every three minutes the game changes from chaoticm button mashing fun to chase the glowing balloon. Other than that I love playing with items as they inject an element of randomness into proceedings.

I usually prefer no items, so I or my opponent can focus on the character moves, rather than getting lucky with an item. I'll play with them if others prefer, and my objection isn't terribly strong, but that's my preference.

I do sometimes like turning on the Final Smashes, though. They're a spectacle I love to watch.

I like most items, the ones I don't like are turned off. Sure, sometimes it's satisfying to know you can beat your opponents without any aid, but the randomness that come with items just adds so much fun to the game.

Items are what make Smash Bros. unique, so yes I always have items on. However I usually turn off final smashes and the Dragoon item especially when fighting computer players. I know that Sakurai was so disappointed that it was common for players to turn off items and play only on Final Destination, he and his team probably works hard to balance items so I see why he dislikes those player preferences.

Items off. It is actually serious when I play with friends. Persona 4 Arena is the goof off game which is weird seeing as it is a competitive fighter.

Depends.

We going for a 'serious' match here? Then No-Items, Final Destination/Battlefield it is! If not, then anything goes, especially Pokeballs Only.

That's how my circle of friends has always done it.

I only do items off if we're trying to settle something competitively. Otherwise, excuse me while I spam the fan on the Smash Ball. =P

Most of my melee play is items off, there's a core group of 8 of us who've all played melee for pretty much a decade. We've basically decided that it's such a solid fighter items add little to the proceedings except bullshit. We still regularly play together. We're more prone to theme matches (Can only KO with falcon punch. G&W hammers only match, that sort of thing.)

That said, Pokéball matches are pure hilarity.

Never really play brawl, but when we do all items low is standard, it's so much worse as a competitive game but the items make it tons of fun in a different way.

MvC and SF are serious fighters? Since when?

Unless you're talking specifically about MvC2 and SF3. In which case, no argument.

Or something.

Pokemon fights, ho!
I normally don't care for Smash Bros., but even I can acknowledge that Pokeball battles are THE shit.

If it's 1v1? No items. Simple as that. We're playing to see who can best who, not to see who's the closest to the Hammers when they spawn.

If it's 3 or 4 players involved? Items are usually on. It always turns into a massive clusterfuck where you don't really have THAT much control of the outcome anyways, so might as well turn on items and enjoy the ensuing chaos :D

So, the poll doesn't have my option. :(

Items on!
Simply because the random nature makes it fun, the imbalance of characters is slightly corrected by circumstance and random items.

Although items off for one on one-on-one grudge matches! Which rarely occur but still...

I typically don't like them except for a few like the pokeballs, so I play with them off whenever possible.

Smash Bros is a chaotic fighting game, mostly due to how items can suddenly turn the tide of a match.

I hate the idea of 'no items final destination', because it essentially removes everything that makes Smash Bros different from other fighting games.

Without the items and stages, you're just left with half a game, if you want spr srs fights, play Marvel vs Capcom or Street Fighter, keep your tourney attitude outta mah Smash Bros.
Thanks for making my point far more eloquently than I ever could, Daystar. You saved me a decent amount of typing.

Usually we'd use smash bros as a drinking game and keep the items on. I personally preferred the games 3 of used to have. No items, Link VS Ike VS Marth and they were always awesome! Much more interesting than the items on games we had.

I always like all items on. I don't see how using them makes you any less skilled. Except for the team heal item. that thing is useless

I turn off the items I don't like/have fun using (Bob-ombs, Dragoon parts, Homerun Bat etc), but keep the rest on. Except for Smash Balls when I'm playing as Peach.

usually leave them on, but i have a few friends that are the most cheapest/annoying spammers on the planet, and the items only make it worse, if there is an item god, they fucking hate me and love trolls, because they always have the best things spawn right on/next to them, it gets REALLY fucking old when hammers/pokeballs/assists are destroying you left and right while pika thunder finishes you off.

however, i do like items for the random lulz, especially if it's a crate full of star fox bombs :)
