It's amazing how many people are referencing TV Tropes here.

OT: I'll go with Animated Inanimate Objects. I like the fact that I could amass half a army of flying toasters or refrigerators or combine tractors. I also love the whole elemental things so I can have minions made out of fire, water, earth, electricity, etc.

I prefer a chessmaster style of villain who's minions are basically anyone within earshot, and many that aren't. I suppose manipulating others into doing as you please but not having anyone be specifically loyal to you would be doing it yourself, so that is what I chose.

A.I.O! Sand beast impervious to damage. Water one's to drown you on land. And the ability to make the chair you're sitting on eat you when you least expect it! Stupid or not the possibilities are endless.

Demons. you can't hire good help these days, cultists don't have a great track record, robots need maintenance, inanimate objects... they're inanimate for a reason. Incompetence, probably. Zombies are rotting and beasts... they're good for fetch, but not for bank robberies.

I have the obvious undead slaves (NOT ZOMBIES. I do not tolerate such filth.)

Also, I have gotten myself a fair share of goblins. They're certainly not the most ideal minions, but for an overlord on a budget, hey.

Employed thugs. I would be a mafioso criminal overlord type of guy. Though my aim is less to rule the world and more profit and power. Not to employ it but to have it to maintain my wealth. Maybe a a powerful cadre of close family members but as a general rule thugs.

Thugs and demons I feel would be a bit back-stabby for my liking. Cultists are likely to be just average people, so a reasonable force against them wouldn't have much trouble. Inanimate objects don't have the ability to differentiate between friend and foe without someone controlling them, and likewise for robots, so an world domination force of either would be slightly inefficient. Zombies would be useless as you'd just end up slaughtering absolutely everyone in the world just to keep your army at a reasonable level. Humans have guns and opposable thumbs. Beasts don't.
Maybe I've been a bit pessimistic here. More to the point, who wants to rule the world anyway? Sure, you'd have the perks of total world control, but imagine all the paperwork! No thanks. I'd rather just sit here watching Futurama.

Sorry but terrible TV shows don't really take over the world.
Robots. Why, well they can be hard to kill and can be programed to follow me.
Demons are way to back staby for my taste.

As much as I love robots and would love to take up the role of pretty being Jack Spicer, something interest me a bit more.

Animated inanimate objects (A.I.O.) Pretty much golems.

There are no draw backs. At all. I mean really, having your minions practically ANYWHERE at ANYTIME is just too good to pass up! Plus, I could animate corpses and I could animate metal/computer systems, to a degree. I could have robots minus the maintenance, zombies minus the flesh eating, AND beasts minus the poo. They're immune to and can withstand most blunt attacks, fire arms, energy weap-wait a second, they're pretty much immune to anything throne at them, especially the more elemental minions. Fuck intelligence, does it really matter? As long as they can understand, kill that guy, go here, fill up the death pit, and make me a sandwich, does it really matter?

An army of golems at my command...world domination, baby!

I'm honestly rather surprised at the popularity of the demons. I mean, they'd be constantly undermining you every chance they got.
I wonder if people think they can outsmart them. I think I could make a strong deal, but personally I think testing it out is a bad idea.
Start off with basic mooks- thugs if you prefer- and hire a lawyer to make a contract, then test it with a mook. If the Demons find a loophole, they kill the mook, get the lawyer to close the loophole.

Personally, I'd go for the robots though, there's no reason to rule the world if you've destroyed everything worth ruling in it with demons.

Well the problem is that they only understand simple commands. It means you'll have to kind of micromanage them, no? They'll be tougher than zombies, but not any smarter unless you're there commanding them yourself. Which kind of limits how much they can do.
Oh yeah, I guess that's right. Dealing with an out of control zombie is simply putting a bullet through its brain. A giant sand monster the size of an elephant? Not so simple, I suppose.

Details, details, ruining everyone's fun. Perhaps a hive mind arrangement could work, but then again, that could be tricky. If I go down they go down...then again, regardless of minion type, if I go down, I go down, so it wouldn't really matter.

Robot army so I can make them too intelligent and they'll turn on their creator and they'll all be giant robot ducks and they can grab me and I'll be all "You can't do this I created you NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

And then everything explodes, because Wonder Woman or someone figured out my stupidly elaborate plot, but I'm back in a few weeks because I transferred my mind to one of my Robot Duck minions and become a villain called Baron Silver-Bill and holy shit I need to get a comic like this published.

Out of reach due to not being realistic
---------------------------------------
Demons: Powerful, but way too risky. Unless you let them know you're the most powerful demon around.
Zombies: Useful, but very smelly.
A.I.O.: Well, Golems do seem pretty interesting... But my plan involves having lost and lots of minions.
Controlling animals: Well, That would just be annoying.

-----------------------------------------
Within Reach
-----------------------------------------
Do it myself: Well, in a way, my plans do involve doing it myself...
Hired Thugs: I don't trust humans...
Cultists: Well, I guess indoctrinated humans can be trusted more than the thugs...
Robots: The only right choice.
I'll have robots gathering resources and building factories in secret all over the world. From there more robots will be produced by other robots. And when My foce is large enough to cover the entire surface of the planet in robots twice, then I strike. Or accidentilly push the self destruct button.

Out of all these options, robots seem the most efficient. They don't require sleep, food, water, or pay. They are immune to poison and most forms of radiation. Robots are also much easier to replace, with a good sized factory able to produce several hundred per day. The only problem would be giving them enough intelligence to be an effective threat, but not enough to question why they have to obey you.
