When I went to buy this generation's console Mass Effect, the awesome game that certainly didn't turn into an awful series, had been announced as an Xbox 360 exclusive and I was pretty psyched for it. Given that it's only competion, the Playstation 3, (where at the time, I couldn't even name an exclusive worth playing) was a thousand bucks it was a pretty easy choice.

I'd regret it pretty soon. I have had the usual problems with it - being dicked over by Xbox Live, the horrible community, red ring of death, faulty disk drive, been fucked by Microsoft customer support, horribly loud noise, regular overheating, and so on and so forth - and it really hasn't given me any exclusives worth playing. My Xbox has been collecting dust in favour of my PC and for a very long time I have thought I should have kept said PC as my only gaming system. Except the PlayStation 3 keeps bringing out new exclusives I'd actually like to play. Here are some of the ones I can think of on the spot:

Heavy Rain
Beyond: Two Souls
Uncharted 1
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 3
Gran Tourismo 5
The Last of Us
Journey

So I've been giving some serious thought to trading my Xbox in with my not-insubstantial games library and buying a PlayStation 3. It's not like the exclusives are the only benefit - I've heard the PlayStation 3 is more reliable, quieter, it has free online gaming, Blu-ray and even looks nicer.

So, is it worth it?

Should I even be looking at changing systems when the next generation isn't really that far away?

Is this a "the grass is greener on the other side" kind of deal?

I say go for it if you can afford it especially when you had been unhappy with the 360 or had there been time you had a good time playing on it?

I have both consoles (well, had both consoles, no hardware problems just stuff happening) and you should use one for the exclusives and one to play mainly on. So, yes, get the PS3.

I'll still say grab a 3DO, or even better yet, a Dreamcast.

I've had more fun with those two systems recently than anything in this gen.

Since my old Xbox360 red ringed i bought a PS3.
Yes, the ps3 is way quiter than the xbox. I used headphones all the time with my xbox360, i didn`t want to turn up the volume so much because of my neighbours. For quit cutscenes it was like someone would use a vacuum cleaner in the background, which was funny sometimes (Dom:"ohh Maria...vrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrvrr... it made the whole scene even more ridiculous).

Free online is great. I had never trouble with the online on live, with every game i bought i got a month free to play, but now i can`t afford this many new games anymore so i`m really glad about the free online of the PS3.

The blu-ray is good too. For games there`s no need for disk swapping anymore and i had never trouble with movies (for example heavy copy protection like in Avatar). Of course there are way better blu-ray only players but to me it was a good addition.

About the nicer looks...no, the exclusives look great, awesome and all that but in most multiplatform releases the box turns out to be the winner. The times of bad ports are pretty much over but if you like nitpicking go to a site like "lense of truth". Most of the time it`s ridiculous but in some cases (RDR) you can notice a difference. It never hurted the fun of playing games on the ps3 for me.
Since you`re already a pc user asking for advice for buying a console i guess graphics doesn`t matter this much to you, right?

The grass isn`t greener at the Sony side but there are way more exclusives + the games you can buy for both consoles.
With an xbox you got Gears of War 1-3, Halo series, Forza and Alan Wake (did i miss something?) and many little, good indie titles over live not available on the ps3.

With a ps3 you get many exclusives and most of them are pretty cheap by now. I like them almost all (Heavy Rain wasn`t my kind of game) and i take Uncharted over Gears anyway. You will have much to play. Just search for a thread about exclusives.

Waiting for the new consoles is bringing you in the same position as before. There`s no real info on them. I`m going to wait how it all turns out and i doubt that buying a PS4 or Xbox720 right at the start with little to none games for big money is worth it.

I am in the exact same plight as you, my friend. And I really do think you should switch consoles. If it weren't for Mass Effect 1 and Halo 3, I'd never have considered buying the 360.
I would definitely do so, if just for playing The Last of Us and Uncharted 3, but I has no moneyz.

Loved the im a douche who likes the neutral option. fits me like a glove. I just see a console as something to play games on never did get into the console wars stuff. But thats my take on it.

How many 360 games do you own for your 360?. If you don't own that many and since your 360 is gathering dust doing nothing sure go for it. Since you look interested in the exclusives the ps3 has. I would research into the ps3s line of exclusives though if thats the only reason you are looking into buying a ps3.

If you still can't decide theres always a pros and cons list?

I went from 360 to PS3 over three years ago when I realised that it had way better exclusives(the silence of the console was a huge plus as well) and I can't say I've looked back ever since.
Love my PS3. <3

Have both. Each console this generation has its merits, each console has exclusives that are worth playing, and I really couldn't decide which is better overall, they're both excellent systems (as is the Wii). However, if you have already played all the Xbox 360 games you want, and theres nothing on the horizon that interests you, then definitely trade it in for the PS3 if required, it has a solid lineup of titles, well worth your money at this point.

Also, if you do decide to pick up a PS3, check out the following games: Valkyria Chronicles, Ico/Sotc HD pack and Metal Gear Solid 4.. these three games are in my opinion, the best reason to own a PS3 (not including the games on the way, such as The Last of Us and Playstation all-stars battle royal, which look really good).

I'm more of a 360 guy but given the problems you had to put up with I wouldn't blame you for switching. Now that I think about it PS3 has way more exclusives such as Metal Gear Solid 4, inFamous, LittleBigPlanet and Ratchet & Clank games so it's certainly not lacking games you might not have tried before.

Trade in all the games you've no interest in, keep the console. Buy PS3 and enjoy future Xbox exclusives, arcade + indie, and usually better multiplatform releases at the same time as checking out everything the PS3 offers. I own all three of this generation's consoles and the Xbox has had the most use, although all are decent.

Anyway, PCs seem to be getting the lion's share of best games in the present and future, maybe get a new GPU? :p

I switched from 360 to PS3 about 4 years ago because I got fully pissed off with my 360's dying every months or so (4 of the bastards!) and it was a good switch.

Though I didn't buy it for many exclusives (apart for Valkyria Chronicles) I mainly bought it for its durability and longevity. That was the main factor for me in the end, though the new list of exclusives and other tiles is really good now.

I doubt most people consider themselves that deeply attached to machines.

On topic: Find a pre-loved PS3 and keep your 360. My brother owns both and we've formulated this opinion:

1)Games that are on both XBox 360 and PS3 tend to be better on the 360 because they're better optimised. I think it's something to do with the 360 being easier to work with, but also that if a developer wants to port to PC, they might as well be somewhat onboard with Microsoft technology.

Also, the 360 is the weaker of the two hardware-wise (360 person here btw), they wouldn't usually make a game on a stronger console then have to port to a weaker one.

2)The PS3 is the go-to for exclusives. The 360 has certainly had some good ones, but we both feel the PS3 exclusives are better.

Also, get the ICO/Shadow of the Collosus bundle.

I own both, I play the PS3 more. Just has more games that fit my taste.

I should note my 360 isn't hooked to the internet, my TV is on the other side of the house and I didn't want to spend the money for that overpriced wireless adapter. I did go to the effort one day of stealing the ethernet cable from our PC and hooking the 360 to it in the interest of quickly downloading Basion. Had to jump through some flaming hoops, Xbox live wouldn't take my credit card or paypal account, I finally gave up and still haven't played Bastion...

In that respect I can absolutely say Sony takes your money in a much more efficient manner.

Also give Journey I try, if people haven't already listed it.

You should get the newest indie bundle if you want Bastion.

As for getting the OP, go for it. You have no idea whether the next gen console will be backwards compatible with the games you listed.

I have both, I don't know if I would personally say that the PS3 is more reliable, I've had it die twice in a year (thank god Sony replaced both times, though I've gotten 90% through Uncharted 1 twice because yay memory wipes), yet my launch day 360 is still trucking.
I own the PS3 just for the exclusives, but for say 3rd party games that end up on both I tend to buy the 360 one just because PS3 versions have that problem of occasionally turning up worse than the 360 version.

I have both I would say the PS3 is better overall. Better exclusives, free online, more reliable, on that note you got to wonder if the X box didn't brake all the time would the sales be the same as the PS3? It doesn't matter but I was just thinking about that.

You could just get it for the PC I mean you don't need a good PC to play Bastion my laptop runs it fine and it chugs trying to play Half life 2 sometimes. That is something grate about PC's you don't need a grate one to play games on them, they have settings. Also I think you can plug in a controller anyway.
