Isn't this what they call a transcendental human? Or something like that...

That way we would become immortal and therefore no more newborns... that's boring.

Depends to what degree, if we are all machines with no affection, hell no! But Trans-humanism to the point where we are truly superior, but still have human minds and live for much longer... where everyone has machinery inside them, unnoticeable from the exterior but having great effect... sounds like heaven to me.

My friend is a strong supporter of Trans-humanism, and I can see why.

Sounds fun

Besides, probably won't happen for a while. Plus our opinions will have probably changed by the time we've mechanically and nanotechnologically upgraded ourselves to our upgraded eyeballs. That part WILL be fun.

Well, really it?s just the invention of technology smarter than humans. This can take a number of forms as far as I?m aware. Anything from a technology that directly increases what the human brain is capable of, this would be a major merging of the human body with technology. Or it could take the form of an AI. There will be some other things that I can't think of right now. Any of these things could cause shit to hit the fan but not necessarily.

Me, I'm all up for modifications or alternatively I would like to preemptively welcome our new AI overlord.

Bloody silly idea.

Small collectives might be an interesting experiment, but I don't want to be Borg, personally.

Wouldn't want that, it would be the first step before someone figures out how to control that part of you.

So, reading up on science-y things one day I stumbled across the concept of singularity.

This is the point at which humanity develops so far that our consciousnesses have merged with technology, ultimately becoming a sort of super-intelligent human-computer thing. Basically, it evolves beyond the point-of-no-return.

So I ask you, Escapaneers - What do you think of the Singularity?
Won't happen.

People like too much being themselves.

The Singularity is defined as being the point where established rules no longer apply, and things become increasingly difficult to predict.

Therefore, more or less by definition, which can't say if it'll be good or bad, really. Not even the usual "there'll be some good and some bad" or "good for some, bad for others" lines can't be used.

If it means I could be an awesome cyborg ninja, then yes, singularity would be awesome.

I think Alastair Reynolds [http://voxish.tripod.com/] explores quite a few concepts of singularity as a fiction writer and, although your definition is very broad, I'll latch on to your basic assumption and run with that.

I am all for technological improvements to my personal life, and look forward to having computers that are so smart we can't ever hope to compete (in smartness; and, don't worry, we'll still get to do dumb things).

I have to say Hell no: because anything that will stop us surviving, as a species, being bombed back into the stone age is a bad thing.
Not because we are likely to do that to ourselves, but because it is possible.
