So, Amazon Prime Day is here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.940299-Whee-Its-Prime-Day], and the 3DS XL is on sale. However, I don't know of enough must play games to justify the purpose.

So, I've made a duel purpose thread - The first is to ask you all to try and 'convince' me to buy the 3DS by giving me your favorite games from the platform - Must play titles that would enrich my gaming life.

Second, and related, simply share your favorite games, and feel free to discuss them with other!

Thank you all in advance!

EDIT: Gimme whatever you got. With the exception of non-Kart racing and sports, I'm game for most every genre in some degree.

Well, it depends on if you like:

1) Nintendo games

2) Japanese games in general

3) JRPGs and visual novels in particular

I'm up for most things, sans non-kart racing and sports.

EDIT: And twitch RTSs, but I think I'm correct in assuming thats not an issue.

I literally bought a 3ds for smt4, as in, my preorder receipt for the game also was the receipt that the 3DS was purchased in. I showed it at the gamestop employee when pickin it up and I saw a nod of understanding occur.

So, that is to say, I know the feel of needing a reason to buy the system.

SMT4
Bravely Default and Bravely Second
Rune Factory 4
Senran Kagura Burst
Pokemans
Monster hunter 4
7th Dragon 3
Project x Zone 1-2
and finally, a game nobody knows as it is a digital only visual novel with no voice acting and amazin plot: petit novel series: Harvest December

These are my must play games for it.

One great thing about the 3DS...it plays all DS games too. I did not own a DS, cause I thought it was dumb (still do) but when I got a 3DS, I mostly started buying old DS games.

As for 3DS games, well, Pok?mon for one. That was why I got the 3DS in the first place. Animal Crossing New Leaf is also greatly worth it.

While Ocarina of Time was a N64 game, the 3DS version is the definitive version now, since it fixes a few issues (the water temple isn't so bad anymore) while also adding Master Quest. Starfox 64 3D is also great, and it lets you play the old graphics if you want. Plus not having to use the N64 controller is great.

LoZ: Link Between Worlds is also a really fun Zelda game.

Super Mario Land 3D, while not a ground breaking Mario game, is a fun on-the-go Mario game when you need to waste a few minutes here and there.

Pretty much, yeah.

Anyway:

Nintendo Games:

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was probably the best Zelda I've played in the last 15 years.
Hyrule Warriors is great if you like Mosou games.
Super Mario 3D Land is a pretty good 3D platformer
For 2D platformers go with Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Mario Kart 7 is good, but not as good as 8
Pokemon... if you like it, this is more of it.
Xenoblade is an action RPG with a huge world and giant mech fights. Only playable on the New 3DS (recognizable by its extra control nub and buttons)
Fire Emblem Awakening is a turn-based strategy RPG with a great deal of story and can be pretty challenging.
The two Kirby games are worth checking out as well.

JRPGS:

Bravely Default has a great battle/character building system with a pretty good story that's flawed by a really weird game structure choice late in the game. Its sequel avoids this flaw but has a less weighty story. In any case, your opinion of this game could depend on your tolerance for certain anime tropes.
Tales of the Abyss is a very well-done port of the PS2 game.
Etrian Oddysey IV is an old-school dungeon crawler where you have to build your own team and map the dunegons yourself. There are also remakes of the first two games that add story modes.
Fantasy Life is sorta like a one-person MMORPG. Lighthearted stuff, but fun for a while
Rune Factory... think Stardew Valley. This came first, though.

VNs

Virtue's Last Reward: A VN series with a dark story and life-or-death room escape puzzles. The first game is was on DS, but all DS games are playable on the 3DS.
Ace Attorney: Long-running mystery series. The fifth game is available for DL only, and the 6th is due this September. You can also download the first trilogy.
Professor Layton: VN told through brainteasers with a Studio Ghibli-esque art style. The first four games were on the 3DS. The last 2, and well as an Ace Attorney crossover game, are on the 3DS.

Bravely Default - JRPG. Classic-styled, too, very much akin to the remake of Final Fantasy III, it's all turn-based and you have job classes and dungeons and a lot of options that allow you to tweak the difficulty. I can't speak for Bravely Second yet, since I can't afford to get it.

Fire Emblem: Awakening - If you like games like XCOM, it's kinda like a Japanese fantasy version of that. With more story. Again, can't speak for the newer Fire Emblem games, but Awakening is pretty legit and is newbie-friendly, too (since one of the things Fire Emblem is known for is punishing difficulty).

Monster Hunter 3 & 4 - You either love or hate Monster Hunter, depending on how much you can get behind lots and lots of grinding. Personally, I think the games are fantastic, though I'd note that it's an exercise in futility to try playing them without a second control stick (either through the Circle Pad Pro or maybe the New 3DS).

Kirby Triple Deluxe - This is the Nintendo franchise that I'll forever be okay with them not overhauling, as there's just so much simple charm to the Kirby games that make them a delight to play. Planet Robobot just recently came out, and other Kirby fans seem to enjoy it as well, but as above...

The obvious, Pokemon - If you like JRPGs and monster collecting/raising, you can't really go wrong with Pokemon. I hated Black/White, but X/Y on the 3DS pulled me back into the fold and Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby are both great as well.

Super Smash Bros. - Kind of debatable; some people have issues with the screen size for the game but I've never found it to be particularly limiting, and the game plays perfectly fine. Still, if you've got a Wii U and the cash I don't know that there's any reason to get the 3DS version instead unless you value portability.

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance - This hinges entirely on whether you care about Kingdom Hearts or not. The game itself is good, but everything about the plot and locations and characters will be a complete mystery if you've never played the franchise.

Tales of the Abyss - It's a port of a PS2 game, but it's still an awesome JRPG which was sadly overshadowed at the time by its Gamecube brother Tales of Symphonia.

If you never got any of the Ace Attorney games, the Ace Attorney Trilogy is the original three all in one. I highly recommend it, though I suggest you get used to save scumming a little bit. Even though it makes you quit from the game when you save, you can re-load that save as many times as you want.

Shin Megami Tensei 4 is also a good game. It's got some problems, but its actually one of the easier SMT games, and if you're looking to make the jump from Persona to Shin Megami Tensei, it's a good place to start. I'd recommend Strange Journey afterwards though.

Fire Emblem is also a must have, though I'd recommend Awakening over Fates.

IMO as a Pokemon makes it already worth it. But there are lots more choices: Ace Attorney remake, Monster Hunter 3, 4 and Generations, Zelda Link Between Worlds, Super Mario Land 3D, all the Nintendo DS library (thanks backwards compatibility). The question would end up with, what would you gain by not buying it?

It's currently my most-used gaming system. My personal favourites:

SMT Devil Survivor: Overclocked & Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
Majora's Mask 3D
Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Pokemon Y
Fire Emblem: Awakening

My two main recommendations are the Pokemans and the Zero Escape series (the first game - Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - is a DS game, but is obviously playable of 3DS).

If I must convince you, better start by the first party line-up: Mario, Kirby, Zelda, Starfox, all of these got solid titles for the system. There is also Nintendo's less known Ips like Pushmo (series of platforming puzzles), Sakura Samurai (an anti-hack-and-and-slash), Dillon's Rolling Western (a sort of Tower Defense). There are Strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem, the Steam series and Stella Glow, normal RPGs like Mario & Luigi Dream Team, the Monster Hunter series and Pok?mon, various indie platformers like Cave Story, Shovel Knight and Shantae.

I wonder if anybody tested Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the New 3DS, one of the complains of the port is the framerate drops... Oh yeah, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater is available for the system.

Then there's the retro library, featuring titles from NES, SNES (if you have the New 3DS), Game Gear, Sega Genesis.

The only thing scarce in the 3DS library are 2D Metroidvanias, which were plentiful in the DS era when Castlevania was still making games

Well, if your into Nintendo games and JRPG's then it's a great system.

Honestly, I would get it for Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Bravely Default. Perhaps Monster Hunter and Pokemon, but I see those as the killer apps for the system.

I just wish Rockstar would make a GTA Chinatown Wars sequel for the 3DS.
Other than that people recommended already some good games.

Well, I finally bought it. Was fighting with myself all night, then decided fuck it, 200 bucks is worth going to sleep at this absolute moment. Much like shopping while hungry, I'm worried I may have made a bad decision, but its done.

Picked up Shin Megami Tensei IV as my first game, though for some bizarre reason, it seems half of Amazon's 3DS games (And all the Japanese developer ones. No, not imports) are located in a weird warehouse where Prime shipping passes too close to a black hole and takes 4 days instead of 2 to be delivered. So I suppose I'll have to make do with my inevitable digital purchase of Pokemon Red until Monday (Assuming I get the 3DS on Friday as promised. Prime Day and all, so, you know... shit happens).

Also, this experience has reacquainted me to the concept of supply and demand. Some of the games you guys suggested cost a fortune.

Anyway... thanks for the help, guys! Feel free to throw more suggestions around.

Well, my only suggestion is try out some games and have fun. Hopefully they're worth the price.

Niche JP games tend to be rare after a couple of years cause they print few of em. SMT4 had the actual atlus tax being $50 but as all physical copies come with what is basically an LE guide book it didn't feel like a ripoff. The digital ver however costing the same was absurd.
