The holiday is only relevant in the UK. And just barely. V for Vendetta is relevant everywhere, to everyone. V wins.
Honestly don't care about Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes was used by Alan Moore as a famous Brittish representation of a man that died trying to fight for his ideals. Also, because he tried to blow up the parliament, and that's sort of where V was headed.
As far as I'm concerned both the book and it's message largely supersede the Gunpowder Plot in current relevance. Also because Guy Fawkes was a religious nutter, so... his actions are sort of tainted...
