They happen to be the only national chain of specialty game retailers. They are so far from the only game retailers that the idea of their being a proper monopoly is laughable.

game another big game retailer also that is why we have to support the independent retailers so their is more of a competition for game stop meaning things will be better for the game industry.
Game Exchange
Game Crazy
Play N Trade

And your theory of buying from "smaller or independent game shops" doesn't sound at all like a solution because it still doesn't help the developer get more money. Or, you know, buying from and supporting Walmart or Best Buy is still supporting a monopoly (by your standards of "monopoly").

Oh, and don't forget Ebay/Amazon... I love getting games for $3-4...

I'll get my games where I can pay the least. I don't care if it is a chain, steam, local retailer, or otherwise.
I choose with my wallet.

Buying used games from Gamestop doesn't seem any different from buying used games from the Play and Trade 20 miles farther away. Besides, the prices tend to be about the same or better at GS anyways, so I usually just buy there. As long as I buy the important ones new that I want to support, that's enough for me.

Yeah....no. I buy from Gamestop becuase there are NO game stores in my town and I have to have my mom or dad (still a minor) drive me there to get a game. I could buy from best buy, but I don't much like them, I could buy from wal-mart, but I like to buy SOME games used. I am for the "Gamestop should give some of it's used-games sales to the developers". But I don't think that buying used games if punishable by death. Gamestop happens to be my favorite gaming retailer and I don't see that changing anytime soon, becuase their deals are usually the best I can find.

I might as well seeing that a Play n Trade is next to it and they're a lot more friendly. Plus the girls working there are pretty cute too.

No thanks. I may not really like Gamestop, but if I were to get rid of them, I'd have no where to shop for games.

This video does hold a lot of valid points. However the basic premise is critically flawed.

Ganmestop isn't a monopoly. They are an industry leader. They are not a monopoly.

There's a world of difference there.

My thoughts exactly.

I have two game-centric (non big-box) stores in my area. A few gamestops, and a store that sells entirely through used games and movies. The latter is great for finding niche games and retro games, but gamestop is my first choice nearly every time.
I do understand that the used game business model is very unfair with dealing with publishers and developers, but it won't change anything if we just go to another store that follows tha same model.

edit: there are some misunderstanding that people have
1. this is NOT A BOYCOTT this is not trying to crush gamestop and crush it into the ground I am saying that should let a healthy competition grow between it and other game shops so that gamestop and it's used games don't damage the industry. I am just trying to get gamestop to see that we want to see the game industry grow as well as get good deals (sure they wont be as good as before but if it means more creativity in games I am willing to take that down side).
Yes, it is. A boycott is a movement to not shop at a place. Whether it crushes the target is irrelevant.

2. OK I will accept that game stop hasn't reached monopoly standards but it is getting pretty close to it from my knowledge.
This one has already been proven false. I mostly buy online myself. And, seriously....Walmart? Amazon?

3. I understand if you buy a used game once in a while like it's old and you can't find a new version or you don't have the money that's reasonable but instead of making gamestop think wow I get more then 60% of my profit from used games lets continuous selling them they think wow that other game shop is starting to grow quite big lets try and come up with good deals to get costumers to come back to us.
What if the game isn't worth it? If I had to pay $60 for Aliens vs. Predator, I wouldn't buy it. My game collection would probably be 1/5 the size it is now if I had to always buy new because, frankly, most games aren't worth the 60 dollar entry fee (and, with DLC, that price tag is moving upwards].

In fact, one of his arguments is that, with Gamestop, we can essentially "try before we buy" because people keep returning it so quickly. Well, where's the problem with that? That says more about the lasting appeal of the game than it does about Gamespot's policy. I gamefly to see if the game is worth buying much less buying at a full price. Why should I make the blind faith leap when quite a bit of the industry, including the indie games, are crap?

His equation is also one-sided. He complains a lot about the effects of the economy on the industry. Well, guess what? Everyone is hurting. Increasingly, the choice isn't "buy used or new". It's "buy used or don't".

Also, on a related note, he talks about niche titles and says that, if you must, wait a few weeks to buy them somewhere else rather than buy them from Gamestop. Well, that's just great. We'll send the message that niche titles aren't welcome at this party. Does anyone really think that, if these niche titles aren't selling at Gamestop, mom and pop stores will fall all over themselves to get the niche title?

Also, on the subject of new vs. used, another industry that recently had some hard times was the American auto industry. Has that inspired you to buy American? More importantly, has it inspired you to buy new vs. used? No? Then why do you think that the video game industry should be any different?

4. I don't hate gamestop or used games
Yes, you do.

nuba km said:
in fact without them I wouldn't have been able to get interested in games but I see that they are damaging the gaming industry and I want to continue seeing the game industry develop so I don't want it to get damaged.
Well, given the move toward download-only (which is going to be a far more damaging move than anything Gamestop is doing), soon you'll live in a world where paying full price won't be an option. We'll see how well this goes over then.

In essence, it sounds like Moviebob had a falling out with Gamestop and they've now temporarily replaced the Bible/Christianity as something for him to harp on. If he's really this concerned, why not tackle piracy? Oh yeah. Piracy has become semi-acceptable and attacking individuals isn't as easy as attacking a corporation.

Bottom line: Buy from Gamestop. Don't buy from Gamestop. Perhaps you and Moviebob will succeed in your little revolution and you will have not only cost the customers an option to buy from, poorer gamers the ability to buy games and Gamestop employees their jobs, you will have guaranteed that the gaming industry will ultimately have fewer sales due to having fewer stores to sell them from.

............

Yeah. I see where this would do nothing but help the industry.

Name another big game retailer
Well, I can buy all the games I want from:
Best Buy
Futureshop
Walmart
Rogers Video
The Source
HMV
K-Mart
Target
Staples

I'm sure there is a few I'm missing.
And do you know how many private owned, 'mom and pop' stores around my area sell new-release video games?
Zero.

I'll keep buying from Gamestop.

When used games are taken out of the equation, then Gamestop doesn't have a monopoly at all! I guess you could make some form of arguement about how Gamestop is the only store still selling me indie PS2 titles, but i hardly see how that would be having an effect on the industry. If i buy a new copy of Guilty Gear XXACP from Gamestop because thats the only place i can get it, then the developer still got their money cuz i bought new.

If we really want to give the industry a boost, we just have to stop buying used games! Seriously, the "value" to the customer for used games isn't all that great. You'll generally save about $10-$15 buying used, which honestly isn't all that much, especially when you consider that you're risking a poor quality game that might not even be playable.

tl;dr Shell out the extra $10-$15 for new games. Both you and the publisher will thank you for this.

Where's the "I already do all my game shopping through Amazon because they give me like $20 off of every pre-order, free release day delivery to my door and I never have to leave my chair" option on the poll?

I tried supporting PlayNTrade but I got burned during the release of Dead Rising 2. Eventually I did end up buying it from Ye Olde GameStop.

From now on? I'm a mercenary. Whoever/Whatever has the best deal for me I'll go to.

That being said I've never had any bad experience buying from gamestop, minus their lack of selection (I like browsing old games). I even like their gamer-edge card if only for the magazine subscription I wouldn't otherwise sign up for. The employees there have always been nice and courteous, and aside from trying to push shiznit on me at the register, it all goes relatively smooth.

I think MovieBob might have failed economics. If we support indie game stores that deal in used games, isn't that going to make it a more appealing business model? It might even convince Wal-Mart or whoever to start doing it. Also, what Matt said about it not being a monopoly.

Used games... I never even thought about it being bad for the industry....

I rarely go to Gamestop anyway unless I'm in the mall and bored. If I really want to buy used, I got to disc replay because they have EVERY system for sale there. If I want to buy new, I usually go to a chain store like a Walmart or Kmart.

I don't even live near a Gamestop. If I did, I would still buy there. Gamestop is not a monopoly, or close to one. There are lots of places that sell games.

I own a console.

I buy used.

I love my local Gamestop.

So... yeah. I voted no. And I did so proudly. But hey, keep spitting in the wind, see how that turns out. I'm sure you and Bobby can convince the gaming population that everyone should have paid $60 for Alone In The Dark or Sonic 2006, or that buying from frakking WALMART is somehow morally superior and better for the world than supporting Gamestop is.
