As a couple other people have noted, it's a little hard to base our opinions when only one of the movies is out.
For my part I'm more interested in the Dark Knight Rises. I never really got into the Batman comics, but I did spend a bit of time reading Knightfall. Of all the villains to step into the large clownshoes of Heath Ledger's joker, Bane was definitely the one to go with. To me it looks like it's going to be a serious, well done ending to the trilogy.
On the other hand, Avengers was, well, fun. You could almost tell that the film was a mashup of every possible fight sequence they could work in. It worked well, but what held it back was that Loki, who might've been my favorite character/actor in Thor was really underutilized. He just kind of sat there and cackled maniacally, if he'd had a villain 'stache he would have twirled it. Basically somewhere in between all the Whedon banter I kept hoping for something a little more substantive. No dice, but it was a grand two hours.

Sales wise it would be the Avengers but I could be wrong. Yes I know the Dark Knight Rise will be the final conclusion to that franchise but I don't that beating the one big superhero team movie.

As for the film itself, I reserve my judgement until I've seen The Dark Knight Rise.

The thing I love most about the Nolan Batman movies is I don't feel like I'm watching a superhero movie. And I hate movies about superheros.

So I'll probably like DKR more, although I'll never know for sure, because I'm not watching Avengers.

Also this.

The Hobbit will be da bomb folks.
Yes indeed. Nothing will stand in it's way.
Re-watched Fellowship the other day, forgot how good it was, it's probably my favourite, mainly because I prefer the feel of it to the epic nature of the other ones. It's more of a journey and an adventure. Love 'em all to bits though.

I didn't see an option to choose both. I'll admit, The Dark Knight Rises isn't exactly making me squeal like a little school girl, but I am still interested in seeing it and how the trilogy will end.

I don't know. I haven't seen the avengers yet, and The dark knight rises isn't out yet. I'll say when I've watched them.

But which one am I more excited to see? Dark knight.
Because Batman.
Batman>Marvel>The rest of DC

I saw The Avengers three times in the cinema, so I seriously doubt I'm going to enjoy DKR more. It might be the "better" film though. I have no idea which will make more money.

However, as others have said, this year is all about The Hobbit.

Saw the avengers 3 times in the cinema, which is a record for me (saw all LOTR movies twice each). It was really fun and awesome to watch, I really hope Dark Knight Rises is the same. Although the serious tone of the trailers makes it seem like a difficult to watch drama then cool action movie. I hope I'm wrong. I'm not sure if Batman will top the sales of the avengers, but it will be awesome in its own way.

It's a fun and great action blockbuster, but it simply isn't trying to be more than that. It wasn't a particularly smart film, it didn't make an attempt to tackle any deeper or mature issues. It was a relatively family friendly super hero movie.
I completely agree with your analysis of the Avengers, but unlike you this is why I enjoyed it more then any of Nolan's Batman films. Personally, I think companies are trying too hard when it comes to their art products (TV, films, games etc) and forget that not only can something that aims to simply be "Entertaining" be a massive hit with both critics and audiences (see also, Raiders of the Lost Arc) its also very very hard to do (Transformers).

I think the Avengers will ultimately outgross Batman, but I think I'll like Batman more. I have no desire to see the Avengers yet, since it looks so hokey and cartoonish (this is just a first impression without seeing it). I'll get around to seeing all those Marvel movies one of these days, but Batman is my bread and butter. The success/failure of DKR is more interesting to me than the Avengers because I'm sort of a Nolan fan as it is. Joss Whedon's good, but I haven't been following his career like I have Nolan. The guy's work fascinates me. And it could be argued Avengers success had more to do with the business/marketing end, rather than the creative guidance of its filmmaker (i.e. same film with original characters wouldn't have made nearly as much money).

I would say The Avengers will win on both fronts. Frankly I enjoy more light-hearted family friendly film than dark/mature films. Not that I don't like films like TDR but given two equally well made movies I'll generally prefer the one with the lighter tone.

Secondly The Avengers will likely win in the box office due to a greater appeal. Yes Batman is popular, but the Iron Man and Captain America films brought the Avengers equal recognition prior to the film release. Secondly because The Avengers is designed to be more family friendly it will appeal to the spectrum from child to adult. The Batman films are meant to appeal to the teen-adults. Finally The Avengers film is more group friendly able to accommodate the interests of a variety of interests. Whereas the Batman film is more uniform.

TDKR will undoubtedly be very successful and I fully expet to enjoy TDKR greatly. I just don't think it will reach the box-office values The Avengers did and I personally am unlikely to enjoy the film more.

I will probably enjoy TDKR more because it won't be a nearly mindless action movie like the Avengers was. I liked the Avengers and thought it was a fun ride but it's almost complete lack of a story made it pretty forgettable for me.

The Avengers will make more though because if Avatar has shown us anything, it's that people will flock to visual spectacle regardless of the movie's substance.

Regardless of a better or not argument, if DKR is even in the neighborhood of Avengers, I'll be a happy guy. Here's hoping Spidey's good too. I'm a way bigger Marvel fan than I am of DC, but with the sheer amount of DC I buy, that's really not a victory for Marvel anywhere but inside my head. We had two really good ones and two meh ones last year(comic book movies that is) with Captain America/Xmen as the good and Green Lantern/ Thor as meh(although I only put Thor as meh because his comic is pretty niche, even for comics. I read it, but I don't know anyone else that does). Here's hoping they're all good this year.

Which one do I think will be a more financial success? Probably the Avengers. I think DKR needs to phenomenally good to beat Avengers money wise simply because it has to live up to TDK and Avengers.

A better movie overall? Probably DKR.

The one I will like more? Most certainly Avengers. It's going to the much more 'fun' movie, and I'm much more often up for a 'fun movie' than a serious movie no matter how good or how Batman-y the other movie is. I also don't do this whole Batman > everyone thing.

As far as I am concerned though, both movies coming out makes this pretty much the best summer for movies since... well since Thor, Captain America, and X-Men: First Class came out last summer.

Well the avengers was about as entertaining as watching a mop dry with the added advantage of a ticket price.

TDKR will have to be better based on that fact, but it wont come close to TDK because really, the only thing that made TDK even remotely as "good" as it was, was a good performance by a above average actor who died while filming and created a massive hype engine surrounding the film that could not be contained. Had Ledger lived, the film would have been above average.

So The dark knight rises will win out.

I dont know, avengers got in good by being at the start of summer and lasting throughout.
Then again theres buildup to the dark knight but its still 1 month away with tickets already selling out
Course as a batman fan I will prefer batman but avengers was good.

Really depends how long dark knight will stay in theaters but avengers having gone first worries me. Batman starts in july after spiderman, so I just hope people arent tired of superheroes by that point or hopefully more excited to see another one.

The Dark Knight and Batman Begins are already much better movies than the avengers, as the latter is just a popcorn-flick. If the last one is around the same level of quality, then it has already won.

What? We get people mentioning The Hobbit yet no-one has come forward with Wreck-It Ralph?

Anyway, ill reserve my opinion on Avengers vs. Dark Knight Rises until i actually see the latter.

Though i have to wonder why they didnt keep Joker for the conclusion of the trilogy, and use another villan for the second movie. Its not like Batman has any shortage of villans to choose from.
