By the way John was not the coolest beatle. It was george all the way. What an amazing guitarist.
Seconded. I always thought Harrison made the better songs.
Now, I grew up listening to the Beatles (my dad was an avid fan), so naturally my view is going to be a little biased. But I loved them. I can still remember dancing to "Twist and Shout" when I was two, even though I could barely walk. But even if you do hate The Beatles, you can't deny the fact that they paved the way for later groups who arrived. The Beatles influenced rock'n'roll unlike no other band in their time.

The Beatles? Weren't they, like, bigger than jesus?

Jokes aside, it's great music. I'd advise people to listen to Maxwell's Silver Hammer.

edit: And Ringo Starr is far and away the coolest.

you should get an avatar.
Some of the most interesting, and maybe even notable, posters on this forum don't have an avatar, I will always read what Alex P has to say about something.
So by my logic, you've sat there and thought, 'Wow, this topic is great to post on, I think I will contribute, hmm oh hang on wait what? He doesn't have a picture to represent himself? Maybe he doesn't know they exists, its the only logical explanation for his lack of avatar. I think I should let him know about it, he will surely be grateful for it.'
Sorry, things like this just really get on my nerves, and I need to vent.

Apologies

Anywho, theres no bigger than Jesus option in the poll?
/bad joke been done numerous times in this thread alone...
But I think the Beatles are a great band, in my opinion, one of the best of all time, top 10 at least
There songs are, inspirational, I find they make me think, much harder than any song should...
I enjoy their music, regardless of whether people find me cliche or not, I don't care, they are a great band, and will like them always, unless I find out they, like, burnt down orphanages in their spare time or something, then I may enjoy the Beatles a little less.
But then it becomes an ethical and morality question
Would you enjoy the Beatles music even knowing they burnt down orphanages?
I just realised how tangential I became...

I absolutely love them.
My friends think I'm weird because I listen to them and have a few albums, but who cares?
I adore Paul McCartney,he's great. His video for 'Dance Tonight' was so clever, and didn't McKenzie Crook star in it as the postman?

Where the hell is the option for TOTALLY FUCKING KICK ASS?
Seconded

I love the old sound they have in their songs and the lyrics are wonderful imho. Especially I like All My Loving, Can't Buy Me Love and I Should've Known Better. I didn't listen to the Beatles when I was a kid though I've just started to like them more and more now in my teens. *shrugs*

Personally I can't stand them. However they took music to a new level at that era. There were other, more interesting artists around (Bowie's debut came out the same time as Sgt Pepper, but the latter was better publicised) but they were responsible for influencing a huge amount of modern music.

Looking for an easy way to get a Hot Topic?
"Controversial" ones that have been done to death seem to do the trick...
I got Hot Topic with a thread about dolphins.

I don't like the Beatles, they started a wave of terrible Pop music that hasn't died yet.

The early years were filled with mindless pop, and given those I'd say they were meh. However, Rubber Soul started them down a new path that fully became apparent in the first "Art rock" album ever, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. It was also probably the first concept album. From that point on, each album was full of fantastic weirdness, dark humor, contrast, and pushed the envelope of what could be accepted as "popular" music.

For me their best overall album is Abbey Road, mostly due to the B side, which is one long medley of many songs. The White Album, however, was probably the most groundbreaking due to the new and unheard of ground it covered. Musique Concrete in Rock? Wow.

The years from 1967 (and 66 to some degree, Run For Your Life was one of the first times they showed us their juxtaposition of dark material [jealous murder] in a cheerful song. A later example is "Maxwell's Silver Hammer") through 1970 were absolutely fantastic.

ENGLAND'S first ever manufactured, aggressively marketed boy band.

Granted, they were better than most of the modern crap that's churned out every day, but it's still pop music, whored towards little girls that want to maul the boyish good looks of a record label's latest meal-ticket.

Wouldn't have a go at anyone for liking them, but I'd never go as far as saying they're the best anything ever.

I have already got hot topics. I searched this one to. I think that the search engine is messed up though.

The Beatles were a gigantic leap forward in popular music. Without the Beatles, rock music as we know it now wouldn't exist.

You can dislike them, because that's down to taste, but you can't deny their influence.
I agree with this statement.

Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite anyone?

The Beatles wrote some decent songs but were not the trailblazers that casual music fans think they were. They were skilled artisans, writing honed pop songs rather than way-out-there aryists pushing the bondaries of music. Nothing wrong with that, but there comes a time when you want more than "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", etc.

Some of the posts here make me feel sad and old :(

Anyway, I rather like them. The later half of Abbey Road is some of the most amazingly pleasant music I have ever heard. Love that album. The early rock 'n' roll stuff is rather shallow, but there are a few gems there. The later stuff is generally good. And George was the most likeable guy ever.

Don't forget though, that there were lots of other bands around back then that were as good or better. The 60's and early 70's are a never-ending goldmine of awesome music.
