Haha, I would say Dota is the hardest one to play! So really you are just throwing yourself into a meatgrinder, when you could instead play the easier LoL or Smite.
Typical. And I play a character that very few people use or win with (Naga Siren if anyone cared). As I said, there are some issues I feel with control in DotA that piss me off. I guess I'm a sucker for punishment. Still, I have a history with DotA that involved LAN parties on the Warcraft III engine, so nostalgia.

I might have a look at LoL though, as I know a few people play it here, so could be fun to team up or something. I'm more into Civ at the moment, because I am more into the turn-based strategy side of things like a filthy casual ;).

Wow, good question.
I think LoL [http://www.gameslikezone.com/best-moba-games-like-league-of-legends/] is still pretty much going strong. I didn't quite take to SMITE at first but it's grown on me -- I think it was due to the different perspective.

I know it's not a popular choice, but I quite like Heroes of Newerth. It's got a challenging but rewarding learning curve, but didn't quite take off as much as LoL (maybe precisely because of that)

Cast my vote for smite.

Ultimately its the only title of all these listed i feel like i can actually go back in and play despite a long period of absence and still have fun.

When i ponder if to get back in lol or dota 2 all i envision is rage and suffering. Im not saying smites community is magically better, just that it's easier to get back in the groove of that game and play to a competent level again.

I think part of it might be due to its pricing model as well. HoN sold as a retail game, while League started as free to play. So, on one hand, you have a game with a higher learning curve that requires a down payment. On the other, you have a more accessible game that allows you to pay as much or little as you want. Also might help that League fleshed out its world with supplementary lore, while HoN, as far as I can tell, has almost no lore at all.

Will vote SMITE only played LOL and DOTA2 very briefly but well tbh I dont think MOBAS are for me. I mean I only played SMITE for a few hours but I just prefer the 3rd person camera and the mythology spin.

I still like League, i'm not as into it as I used to be because Season 6 was a fucking clown fiesta but it ain't bad with a few friends. I'll try out DOTA 2 again once I get good internet because sub-optimal ping made turn speed even worse of a mechanic but I enjoy some of the heroes regardless. Lina with the Fuck You Button is good fun. Anti-Mage and Drow are fun even if I have no idea what you build on them. I remember the One True Drow Build (TM.) Shadow Blade directly after Sange & Yasha every game because my positioning is garbage and S&Y gives you some tank stats if I remember correctly then into Butterfly if I somehow get fed enough to get that 3000g item from the secret shop without dying.

I have probably made some DOTA players sad describing this probably terrible Mobafire tier build. I am sorry.
What you build on Anti-Mage is: Battle Fury for damage, regen and farm; Manta Style for illusions, which get the same mana drain and Battle Fury effects as Am himself; Skull Basher->Abyssal Blade for stun; Heart of Tarrasque so that your HP regen is sky-high; Boots of Travel for teleportation across the map; The sixth item is an item of your chice depending on situation.

ON TOPIC: I voted for DotA 2. It is challenging, the combat is fast, all heroes are unlocked from the start and there is an insane comeback potential, which, for example, LoL lacks.

Well, LoL is easier and slower then DotA 2, it doesn't really have active items (as far as I am aware) and there are no secret shops, though you HAVE to buy character if you want them to be avaliable to you permanently (few starting ones aside).

Though LoL is, personally speaking, not my cup of tea. Way too slow.

LoL has fewer Actives, but it does have several including;

Blade of the Ruined King - +AD, +AS, +Lifesteal. Active Steals % Max Health from enemy target and slows them
Randuin's Omen - +Armor, +Health, Slows Enemy AS when hit. Active Slows enemies in an AoE around user
Zhonya's Hourglass - +Armor, +AP. Active puts you in stasis - essentially BKB, but you're stationary while it is active

Just a few examples.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Smite, totally Smite. Its the only moba that doesn't annoy me, its got a bunch of game modes so your not stuck playing conquest over and over, since conquest is horrible. Stupid hour long matches in league.

Left standing? Aren't these all the only relevant MOBAs we ever had after they left the confines of Warcraft 3? Though I think some would consider Nerwerth dead.

Post WC3, I've only ever bothered with Heroes of the Storm. I liked the idea that it is essentially just raw play. There's no nonsense with last hitting creeps, denying, shopping and recipes and all that nonsense. I pretty much stopped enjoying DoTA when it established those as the norm with AllStars. I preferred an alternative - Tides of Blood but that never really caught on. And it had its fair share of issues.

And HoTS is what I expected it to be. Just focus on controlling your hero and killing shit rather than tracking your gold and wondering when you should go back to assemble your Battlefury. Maybe DoTA2 is different now but I'm not too keen to try out another.

MOBAs do tilt me a lot and make me incredibly salty. I'll stick to one brand thanks.

Checked their website, HoN is still receiving updates. No idea as to the size of its playerbase though, but it has nearly 170,000 subscribers on YouTube. So, as obscure as it is, I wouldn't call HoN dead per se. It's certainly more alive than something like Strife for instance.

There have been a lot of attempts; including Infinite Crisis, EA's MOBA (that I've forgotten the name of) etc. These are just the ones left standing.

Though HoN and Paragon feel like they might make their way out soon. And Heroes probably only survived because of the success of Hearthstone; any other developer that had screwed up the launch of a game as badly as Heroes and lost its' playerbase so fast so soon probably would've had the game shut down and the employees fired.

EA's MOBA was called Dawngate. Also, when did HotS screw up its launch and/or lose its playerbase? I was there since the beta, I don't recall either of those things happening. Also don't recall Hearthstone playing a big role.
