But for Movies/TV series instead of games.

EDIT: Updated the poll.

Yeah there's probably better, but I'm loving the Marvel Cosmic setting at the moment. The writers have ressurrected all sorts of crazy characters from the past 30-40years and thrown them together in a series of over the top ridiculous but still gritty wars.

TimeSplitters.
That is all :p

Not a movie, but still sci-fi. I didn't have any other interesting answer.

Well, so many good choices there, where do I start...

Actually, I like all the poll options (except the "I hate Sci-Fi" one ;) and think they all have well developed universes and the Warhammer 40k and Cyberpunk settings are intriguing as well, but I want to add a few options:

The Dune universe

It has a few movies under its belt, which qualifies it and Frank Herbert did such a marvelous job of fleshing it out. The Empire with its feudal structure, the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen society, all the various factions and of course the SPICE! Incredibly great stuff.

The Hyperion universe from Dan Simmons Hyperion books

I just love that diversity, with all the different worlds and settings (The Ousters! The TechnoCore!) and the way a future information space (sort of a future Internet) is described is very neat in my mind. I think there are only the books right now, although a movie seems to be in development.

Now those would be universes I would find fascinating. However, if you would ask me which one I wanted to live in: Star Trek wins, hands down. A united humanity, putting aside differences and bent on self-improvement and exploration? Solving all poverty and property problems with replicator technology? (Mostly) Peaceful coexistence with a boatload of fascinating alien species across the galaxy? Well yes, that sounds like a universe worth living in :)

And on a much more selfish level: Sexy green alien chicks? Holodeck technology to make virtually all your dreams come true? SIGN ME UP, Scotty! ;)

Firefly is pretty top notch. Star trek never really felt complete or in anyway believable to me

I got to admit I personally like the mass effect universe. Its diverse and massive. Its also deep with thousands of years of explorable history and millions of years of assumed history.

Then there are the races. The Krogan are kick ass awesome and would literally eat Klingons for breakfast. salarians are shifty but honourable and the asari... hot blue chicks. Shallow I know. The concept of humanity as an emerging race that gets the back up of literally every other is also a great story with limitless potential.

So yes I'd rather live in the mass effect universe even with the threat of extinction from Reapers. But for sheer ass kicking, warmongering completeness its got to be the 40K universe. Praise be to the God Emperor! I use to collect white dwarf for years and the richness of the stories... Very Vietnamish in style and desperation for a lot of them. Which just makes them all the cooler.

Firefly, but the more I think about it, the more I think Dresden Files would be pretty awesome. Book series by Jim Butcher, short lived stint on SciFi channel--they are awesome if you like the genre, though I recommend the books rather than the TV show.

I like fantasy better than sci-fi, so I'm gonna say Terry Brooks' Shannara series.
It seems to be 100% fantasy at first, but it turns out that the world featuring dwarves, elves and other magic stuff, is our world many years after having been destroyed by our own technology.

The different races are mutated humans, except the elves, who along with the magic had hid themselves a long time ago.
Some forms of technology still exist though, such as the robotic spiderlike creeper tank things, and an artificial intelligence trying to maintain its existence (and having discovered that magic is an efficient energy source, making magic users particularly good batteries).

EDIT: Sorry didn't realise it was exclusive to Movies, Star Wars I guess, even if (especially since) its technically considered by many as science fantasy.

while Star wars has a great Universe I love Warhammer 40,000. I haven't played in years, but I have a bookshelf 2 deep with 40k novels.

Although I agree with you whole-heartedly about them, The Dresden Files are more of a urban fantasy universe than a sci-fi universe.

Most of the good universes are too epic to be on tv or film. My top three are:

1. The Culture (Banks)
2. The Commonwealth (Hamilton)
3. The Honorverse (Weber)

You MIGHT be able to make a movie set in the third one but forget about the other two. Entire wars are fought by the Culture in the space between 35mm frames.

You are a master ninja.

And I'd like to add the Revelation Space universe from the Alastair Reynolds book series.

Epic hard scifi universe that's amazingly well put together. The divergent human race and alien technology and cultures are inticately detailed. On top of that, sweeping space opera narrative.

Star Wars. I love the fuck out of the extended universe, from the novels to the games, i believe that the games and books are way better than the movies, especially KoTOR. But i also really like the Mass Effect universe, it just feels so real and conveys the different alien races are actual sentient beings with souls.

While I adore The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton...

Star Wars has so much more...stuff in it.
