Well, so many good choices there, where do I start...

Actually, I like all the poll options (except the "I hate Sci-Fi" one ;) and think they all have well developed universes and the Warhammer 40k and Cyberpunk settings are intriguing as well, but I want to add a few options:

The Dune universe

It has a few movies under its belt, which qualifies it and Frank Herbert did such a marvelous job of fleshing it out. The Empire with its feudal structure, the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen society, all the various factions and of course the SPICE! Incredibly great stuff.

The Hyperion universe from Dan Simmons Hyperion books

I just love that diversity, with all the different worlds and settings (The Ousters! The TechnoCore!) and the way a future information space (sort of a future Internet) is described is very neat in my mind. I think there are only the books right now, although a movie seems to be in development.

Now those would be universes I would find fascinating. However, if you would ask me which one I wanted to live in: Star Trek wins, hands down. A united humanity, putting aside differences and bent on self-improvement and exploration? Solving all poverty and property problems with replicator technology? (Mostly) Peaceful coexistence with a boatload of fascinating alien species across the galaxy? Well yes, that sounds like a universe worth living in :)

And on a much more selfish level: Sexy green alien chicks? Holodeck technology to make virtually all your dreams come true? SIGN ME UP, Scotty! ;)
You ninja'd Dune andHyperion from me! I am saddened.

Aside from those two, The Dark Tower world. It is technically Sci-Fi, and it is rather interesting, with a movie/TV series on the way.

I'll go with the anime sci-fi universes of either Bokurano or Evangelion.

I am in shock that Dune is not on this poll.

That's what I'd vote for.
I could have added it since it's been mentioned more then once, but as far as I know I can't have more then 8 poll options, and I wrote those that came into mind first.

i think the battelstar firefly and stargate would have to be the best ive seen. they all have there own lore i guess. and if your really into it there is enough stuff to keep you interested.

I have to say Star Trek, as Star Wars isn't Science Fiction, it's Science Fantasy, through and through.

Star Trek's tech & physics are mostly actually feasibly possible, Star Wars, on the other hand...

Anyways, my decision is pretty biased, as the only other sci-fi franchises I've ever watched would be a few stray episodes of Andromeda quite a while ago, and more recently a few episodes of the various Star Gate series, mostly Atlantis and SG-1, while I watch The Next Generation all the time, and occassionally Voyager.

Firefly because space cowboys are bad ass. Though its kind of weird we still use guns 500 years in the future but you just take that for granted and move along.
Actually thats explained in and out of the show quite well. The Alliance has lasers, seen on their big ships. But smaller personal lazers are restricted by the Alliance, the one in Heart of Gold was strictly illegal. Also they appear to cost a lot and are harder to produce (one of the first prototypes being worth a huge fortune). They also seem less reliable as shown when the battery runs out on one.

Therefore ordinary guns are more popular especially because they're cheaper and more reliable, something you want on a frontier planet. The guns themselves sometimes are more advanced either using using more advanced caseless ammunition or being completely overhauled to be fired by pressure or a other new mechanism, hence the crazy gun sounds they sometimes make.

The reason they look old fashioned in either a trend in retro designs or the upgrading of old weapons, much like how many flintlock guns got converted to percussion cap in the 19th century. The reason they're legal is probably similar to the USA of today, where even if you made them illegal there'd be too many in circulation to regulate, so instead they restrict bigger things like lasers and shipboard weapons. A winchestor repeaters is no threat when they can orbitally bomb you.

I'm sorry, it's a close call, but I decided rank the Outlaw Star universe just slightly above the Firefly one.

Because conventional guns are cheap, efficient and reliable, compared to fancy-schmancy plasma rifles and whatnot...

Star Wars; there's just so much awesome stuff Expanded Universe that it'd be hard not to, and whilst the prequel trilogy wasn't great it still added new stuff and never really detracted from the universe. . . Except for midichlorians - you can't quantify the force!
