It depends on the game, however, I generally enjoy the Dawn of War/Company of Heroes style of resource gathering more than the Starcraft/C&C style. DoW and CoH get you out on the field, capturing, killing and scouting immediately which keeps the game interesting constantly. Starcraft and C&C/RA tend to have an ebb and flow of activity with periods of action, expansion, researching, and then the "Final Battle". Dow/CoH kind of battles that ensue tend to be spread out on larger fronts with fewer units until you gain an edge over your opponent.

I like the system of SupCom and Company of Heroes, where you can spend resources to improve them but they still make targets and are often the objective of the game.

Makes a difference. My worst nightmare is the CnC4 type resources - they don't exist. No game un-balancers so the fighting is never one sided or rewarding.

my first instinct is to say intrinsic since I'm not one to micromanage a mini-economy along with combat strategy lol

DOW and Supreme Commander are two of my favourite RTSs of all time, and a large part of that was down to the resource system. So ... yeah.

In general, I preffer resources to be

1.) Unlimited - Running out of resources is a buzzkill of the highest magnitude and puts a stop on many epic matches. A compromise solution is also acceptable to me, where a source can be depleted, but then continues to provide resources at a decreased rate (like Vespene Gas vents in starcraft)

2.) Placed in such a way as to promote field play - Dawn of War is a great example. Turtling isn't really an option there, you need to get out in the field and cap those points. Otherwise, you'll just get outteched or outnumbered.

I really liked Dawn of War 1's resources gathering so I guess that's my vote.

I do like Command and Conquer's too, sort of.

The system in Red Alert 2 works very well indeed, except in the late stages when the ore begins to run out and all your harvesters chase the respawning ore all the way round the map..

Best way to go is a healthy mix between the two with an emphasis on having to leave the base.
