Okay, this is not meant to be an incendiary post, and i'm not trying to offend our lovely lady escapists but the c-word has almost always been considered more offensive than most profanity. The first game that I've noticed using the c-word was GTA IV when Pegorino is getting paranoid and says to Niko "The world is a ****!" which actually made me laugh out loud, cause it was kind of funny. RDR also employs the c-word on occassion. So my question is, is the c-word too far? Is it something that games could do without? I certainly don't believe so, but what do you guys think.

That being said, what games besides these do you remember hearing the c-word in?

Were you offended or indiffernet?

please share.

EDIT:
Don't know why the poll isn't showing up. I promise I'm not retarded.

Just for the record, to clarify if my stance is confusing, I am in total support of free speech, period. So if developers write the word **** into the script of a game, thats fine by me.

...People use the C word in real life. Therefore I think they should use them in games. That whole...believability thing.

So no it's not too far, in fact it's used quite a bit in the real world...

I think people get their panties in a bunch over the word only because it holds a vaguely sexual connotation.

What is it with some people and '****'? It's, like, a swear word. It's not as if there's some sort of hierarchy... is there? Personally, I'd find mother-fucker more offensive, if I was going to care, not some term for genitalia. How insulting is 'dick', hmm?

The Darkness used it when the main character was being tortured. I was playing it with my mum and I was like "...WHAT DID I JUST HEAR?"

It reminded me when I heard the Trinity Killer on Dexter told his wife to "shut up you ****" it was done in such an off hand way it came out of nowhere

I think The Darkness was the first game I ever heard it in, although they only used it once. I thought it was awesome.

Because I'm a child like that.
Try playing that with your mum popping in.

Is **** really such a bad word? Maybe I just haven't taken note of it... Or perhaps the fact that I'm Swedish...

Hm... I dont think I know any. But I think that fact that its not a word you use in intelligent conversation and using it makes you some how lowbrow is the reason you odnt hear it much.

Actually, I thought you meant Cancer at first, so I was like "... hunh?"

i honestly don't care about this kinda stuff, but it does annoy me went people abuse games so bad for swearing.

there just games, the amount of abuse they get makes it seem like there an art, yet no one seems to admit that.

It was rather surprising in GTA4.
But then I realised people in my junior school said it, so whatever.

I loved The Darknesses' use of the word, where the main character tells one of the police officer to go polish the police chief's ass with his tongue and then calls him a ****.

I just loved how insulted the guy acted afterwards, more than anything.

How is the word **** more offensive then fuck, shit or asshole? I really don't see that big of a deal in it at all.

"****" is particularly offensive because it refers to female naughty bits. You are being obscene, and calling the target a woman at the same time.

As with all swearing in games, it's much easier to be done poorly than done well...generally, sticking swearing into something is an attempt to make something more "adult"...the same applies to nudoty and excessive gore. By this logic, Duke Nukem 3D was much more mautre than many of its contemporaries.

Generally, I'd say it should be avoided in games, because it almost always comes across as puerile nonsense.

No word is too far. It's just words. Use the words that you feel is the most fitting in the situation.

I love how people tiptoe around swear words, almost to the point of hilarity. It's not as if the ground is going to swallow you up upon uttering one. I definitely don't think there is anything wrong with the use of the word '****' in videogames, as long as it isn't used for the sake of EXTREME SHOCK VALUE because that comes of as immature.

I actually remember hearing **** on San Andreas when you first meet Maccer and Kent Paul, Maccer pulls a drugged Paul off the ground saying 'Get up you soppy ****.'
It was a blink (with your ears?) and miss it moment but still surprising, it also confirmed my thought that Rockstar are willing to push the boundaries and I will forever respect them for it.
Overall though I use **** in everyday language far too much so I can't and won't complain about it in video games.

I dunno why but that word seems to hit with more "oomph" than other profanity, maybe it's just my family, who view it as an incredibly offensive word, but when I heard that in RDR it seemed to hit more than the swearing in that game usually does.

the cockney-accented version of the protagonist of Saint's Row 2 sometimes says "pah, Dane Vogel, what a fuckin' ****."

Honestly, it's a word, I don't see why people let these things get to them. Yes, "swear" words are generally used in anger and the word may be associated with negative feeling, but are we seriously going to stifle percieved feelings when it's feelings that apparently need protecting? (from harmless syllables, mind you)
