Well, considering "****" can be used as slang in Glasgow, then i've become kind of de-sensitized to the word.

It just generally replaces words for people, ie "guys", "people", so on and so forth.

For instance:

"We walked into the room and there were four cunts there we'd never met."

So, it's hard to be offended by a word that you hear almost every single day.

C is for cookie. That's good enough for me.

Seriously, though. It's just a fucking word. If you speak the language, you can speak the word. Oh look, Niko speaks english. I guess he can say it too.

Here in the states it seems like its as offensive to women as the N word is to black people.

On the rare occasion that I hear the word '****' uttered in a game, it (without fail) causes me to jump and sit straight.

This isn't because it's derogatory.

This is because it's seldom used and only when under sever duress.

It doesn't bother me, it simply shows that 'shit just got real'.

*Note: It may not always be used correctly. I'm using only examples from personal experiences.

I don't get it, myself.

Funny story about the word though was how when I was growing up my mom always told me "There is one word you should never, ever say", and she refused to tell me what it was. It wasn't until I turned 18 and was quoting one of my dad's friends to mom that I found out it was actually "c*nt" that I wasn't ever supposed to say.

I've never played a game with the word in it though, and I wouldn't care any more than if they used the word "d*ck".

I don't hear it too often IRL here to be honest. Maybe I'm desensitized or maybe its just that everyone is dropping F-bombs on the bus now so I don't really care about "Oooh, swearing!" anymore.

I still speak up when someone is loudly swearing into a phone next to a kid however. They'll learn those words soon enough, they don't need a headstart.

I think The Darkness was the first game I ever heard it in, although they only used it once. I thought it was awesome.
That's appropriate. The original writer of The Darkness comic, Garth Ennis, made it his personal mission in life to get the word into mainstream comics. Years of trying at DC comics with his comic, Preacher; but he scored his first with Marvel's (Nick) Fury.

"****" is particularly offensive because it refers to female naughty bits. You are being obscene, and calling the target a woman at the same time.
Then what makes it worse than "dick"? Also I've never heard it used or used it to call them a woman. Calling someone a woman isn't an offence.

Never played the game, but I love this movie:
WARNING: THIS ENTIRE VIDEO IS ALMOST NOTHING BUT PROFANITY
So I have no problem with any sort of swearing in video games. If I did, I'd be a massive fucking hypocrite.

I thought I would weigh in with a female perspective on this.

Doesn't bother me in the least when I hear it being used in a game or movie or whatever, but if someone called me one I'd punch their lights out. Simply because when a man calls a woman a ****, he usually intends to imply that she is nothing more than her reproductive parts, and therefore is worthless to him (as a person) and is simply something that ought to be used for his pleasure. I do not think that 'dick' has the same implications when said by a woman to a man (usually just means you're a jerk). In that way, calling a woman a **** is a lot like a white person calling a black person a ****** - it reminds them of a time and a culture where they were devalued to the point of being not a person.

So yeah, it is pretty offensive if you say it to a woman, otherwise it's just a more shocking version of the word 'pussy' when directed at a man or used as a general expletive. And it's true that it is used a lot in real life, so art is more than free to use it as well, so long as they realize what the use of it will evoke in certain people.

Moar swearing!!!! I enjoy it.

Oh btw I found out people dont like the c word when I put it into an essay when I was 15. My teacher went fucking nuts it was hilarious. In my defence the paper did say, 'that portrays a real life scenario' so I decided to do a mugging. The defence of 'I dont think a criminal is going to be polite when he's asking you to hand over your wallet' didnt really count for much when I was being interogated the next day hehe.

It's like dick for vaginas, if that makes sense.

In other words, it's overblown. Heh heh. Overblown.

I really don't understand the concept of "swear words." Words are sounds used to get across an idea. The idea is what you should find offensive, if anything, not the sounds you heard that made you understand it.

I get a real kick out of the idea that people only swear because they aren't smart enough to have a huge vocabulary. Anyone who claims that is just stroking their own ego.

Edit to prevent potential flaming: I'm female, and words of that variety just don't bother me. I consider being called a ***** a compliment.

I have to admit that this thread immediately makes me think of Louis C.K. talking about offensive words.

I couldn't find a quick clip of just that bit from his act, but the idea is that '****' is a great word but shouldn't stand for vagina because its too harsh. Even vagina is too hard of a word, instead a piccolo should play whenever such anatomy is mentioned.

I'm in total agreement with him.
