That's a very idealistic view on things. You think modern soldiers are cowards and weaklings? They have to face enemies using weapons that can kill them from a distance in a split second. That takes an enormous amount of balls in my opinion. Much less cowardly than a man who sit on his warhorse with enough armour plating to disable him if he falls off his horse, slashing through footmen who can't even touch him.

Using a bow was never considered cowardice, in fact it was heavily encouraged for peasants to take archery lessons. Oh wait, no, it was the law. This is also in one of the most chivalry centric cultures the world has ever seen.

You use what works. Fighting otherwise is sheer idiocy. Even the damn honour-obsessed samurai used bows.
Actually, using bows / throwing spears and all that business has been regarded cowardice in many eras throughout history. (Not saying that the generals didn't acknowledge the value of such assets, but cowardice nonetheless)

As mentioned before, the honour-bound samurai had no problem with using bows, so I guess it all comes down to a big case of 'Your mileage may vary'?

Vikings are badass, the beard, the ale, the swords, their mythology, everything.

I vote Viking, because they were the only ones to ever conquer Russia.
That, and so much more.

I voted Viking's, because one Viking held off the English army at Stamford Bridge. He just stood there with his axe and fucked up anyone who came near, allowing his army to proceed unimpeded. In fact, they only killed him by boating underneath the bridge and stabbing him with a spear in the nads.

But those Samurai had their issues wit hthe upcoming of 'teppo' (guns). In my original post I was primarily referring to the greek, who despite having a god for archery among other things, alsways regarded archers of being of lower 'class'.

To stop further derailing this thread, if existing then 15th and 16th century duelists, if fantasy is allowed, than my vote goes to either of those guys ( http://www.danscottart.com/Images/DarkElfCavalry.jpg / http://www.therob.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/firewarrior1.jpg )

Mongolians lead by Genghis Khan obviously. They conquered half the world, now that's gotta be badass.

P.S also obviously Sangheili but they are just godly by comparison to any human warriors.

Feudal Samurai. Because they treated swordsmanship like an art form and devoted more time to it than a viking or a medieval knight. The samurai sword was also far superior to any sword produced in Europe/The Middle East. In fact I think it's the best sword ever produced anywhere, right?
Note that I ignored the option "Modern Soldier".

EDIT: I didn't know what I was talking about when I posted this. My sources were a show on Discovery channel about the samurai sword, a fictional book following the life of a viking that I haven't finished yet and a memory of my history teacher suggesting that medieval knights were in a way partially bored nobles.
I have watched a lot of pro-Japanese anime and I very rarely discuss what I see, hear or read.

note that you also are vastly misinformed about the katana.

Try killing a medieval knight with it. It wouldn't be easy. Swords are tools like everything else and you choose a tool for hte job. The claymore is better than a samurai sword in european warfare but woudln't fare as well over in the East.

Seriously, look this shit up so you can stop propagating bullshit.

And feudal knights trained a ton too. It was their living. Oh, and can't forget about all the tournaments they had in europe for fghting skills.

This was an easy one. One of the following has the power to eliminate the others from a range of over 2 kilometers. The others require melee range. Take your pick.

FUCK YOUR SWORDS
Guns are fucking coward's weapons as far as warriors are concerned, if you ask me. A real warrior has the balls to meet his enemy face to face and look him in the eye before killing him; using either bare hands or a melee weapon. Anything else is for cowards and weaklings.
/my opinion
And how much balls does it take to let your mouth shoot off when you're posting on a forum instead of being shot at by iraqi insurgents .. ?

Ma Chao (other). Chinese warrior in the Han era. Too cool.
Gan Ning or Zhou Tai could have owned Ma Chao (and probably did).

Me, I'd say coolest is a female samural. Deadliest? Chuck Norris.

Ninjas duh. They were created specifically to take out the samurais, so I don't see how something could be anymore awesome.
