Ireland.

And more specifically, the Troubles. I figure seeing as my country has spent the last 600 or so years fucking that place up, I'd better learn more about it. Also my dad's side of the family are descended from Irish immigrants, so that has helped boost my interest.

I'm currently educating myself via Wiki, historical films like the one about Micheal Collins, and The Wind That Shakes The Barley. I'm also reading Micheal Collin's biography. My dad also knows quite a lot, so he provides me with bits and bobs of info. I'm also listening to a lot of Irish folk type music too.

I'm also considering doing my dissertation on the subject, in my final year of my History course at uni.

I think I may be going a little over the top with it :p

France. During WW2. I'm tired of hearing war stories of Americans, British, German and Russian troops.

Give me stories of the French Resistance.

Invade France. They dare you to.
Too right, they get a lot of bad press, but I have a new found respect for France (well, the French people) after learning about the French Revolution and Napoleon this semester in uni. The Resistance need more acknowledgment.

Switzerland, cuz if I didn't live here in the UK, I'd move over there. Stable economy, great landscapes, it's a neutral country (no war, yay ^^), and best of all, no official state religion.

I wouldn't mind learning more about France as well. They get such a bad rep for World War 2 and their usally overshadowed by America and Great Britan.

I would blame Hollywood and Churchill. Hollywood only shows the American perspective, and Churchill wrote the history books. Plus, he hated De Gaulle, so he was never going to give the French much credit.

I would like to know more about the Roman Civil War, my knowledge of the Roman Empire is pretty good, but the Civil War presents a noteable vacumn in my knowledge.

The OP may want to change the poll, the title says which country do you want to know about, the poll offers continents, and people are answering historical questions.

To answer the topic directly, i would like to learn more about European culture. I have a freind who is doing European studies, and it seems pretty interesting. The British have always viewed themselves culturally as "seperate" from Europe, besides the odd invasion attempt, there is not a huge amount of interaction between Britain and her continental neighbours. Since the European countries are coming closer together, it might be time to learn a bit about them. I could go on and on about American culture and politics, but i know very little about France and Germany say, dispite the fact they are right next to us.Considering we share common politics, law and economics with them, it would make sense if we shifted our attention towards them.

I too have Irish heritige on my dads side. My interest in Ireland however has been more drawn towards my clan's history in Ireland, which is pretty impressive, and goes back as far as 300AD.

Ahh, I see you're from the NW, My dad's from Manchester, lots of people in the NW have Irish heritage, as I'm sure ya know :D
Clan history sounds very interesting, I'd imagine you can trace that sort of thing back pretty far.

The island of Haiti was owned by the French, but about the time of the French revolution, all the slaves on the island rebelled and took over the island for themselves. Probably not the one you're on about though, as it's no where in near Africa. Still interesting stuff however.

Finnish? Looks like Finnish...
It is Finnish. Translated to English, it's something along the lines of "Hit on, sons of the North!". It's hard for me to translate it though.

I think you're thinking of Haiti, I recommend you check the Wiki-page for Haiti.

Anyways...
As a finnish dude I find Australia and New Zealand the most interesting nations at this moment in time's continuum. I can't explain clearly why but those are the 2 nations I'd like to visit/move into the most at this moment.

Cajt & Crazyhaircut94:

It's "Hakkaa päälle pohjanpoika!" and I'd translate it to " Beat them up son of Bottom"
"Bottom" historically refers to the "bottom end" of Gulf of Bothnia and the finnish people living around it. The singular form in this context can be taken as plural.
...there, a slightly boring translation. Altho I have to say that the literal translation would be "Bottom boy" but the english connotations for that term are quite different... so I prefer "Boy of Bottom" ; )
