XBox1 and EA aside, I actually like where gaming is now. Yes, AAA, Inifinty gagillion dollar budget games are pretty damn samey by and large, but who cares. New Xcom was great, The Walking Dead is a slightly flawed masterpiece at worst, Crusader Kings II is enthralling, Solar 2 is off beat and different and great fun, there is an absolute ton of awesome games for sale, the vast majority of which are very reasonably or better priced or can be picked up at solid discount prices, and even nothing new comes out in a given year that you think looks interesting, there is an absurdly deep back catalog of prior games that could keep you going for years.

Like I said, there are weak points in the industry, which I feel have been well covered in other threads and don't feel like listing again, but overall, I do like the variety and range of games available to me in the modern age, I like the price I am able to pay, since it let's me try titles I'm iffy about with very litle risk if it doesn't pan out, and represent a great cost to fun ratio if it does. In short, despite the trends, I think the games industry, taken as a whole, is better than it has ever been.

Sometimes it feels that we've reached critical mass, like we did during the great gaming crash of the 80s. The market is flooded with mediocre, generic titles and multi-million dollar "flops."
The AAA gaming industry can not keep going the way it has in the past few years, but ultimately it will be for the best. Indie studios are getting more and more power; simpler games with smaller budgets are rediscovering what made gaming great in the first place.

The game industry is currently in a state of flux, and a new generation of developers is rising to power.
The state of gaming may not seem great at the moment, but it will continue to evolve, and the future looks bright.

My only problem is the price. There are loads of amazing games I want to play, but I can't afford them, even pre-owned sometimes.
So OP, I agree with you. I think there is too much complaining and aggression in the community, where we could just embrace what we have.
And when people say loads of games are the same... Well I say that's a great thing. Loads of good things are great. If everything was different, there would be much more shitty stuff out there.

other than the death of JRPG's I can't really complain about current/next gen. There's a lot to look forward to and looking back at this current gen there was a lot of things I enjoyed

Despite the attitude of certain big name companies and the fact that the AAA part of the gaming industry isn't looking too hot, I still have an overall positive outlook on the state of gaming. There's a lot of cool indie titles, or games with smaller budgets in general. Plus thanks to digital distribution, I can download older games should I become interested in them. The latest example being Disgaea.

Plus I am looking forward to some of the next gen games coming out like KH3, Bayonetta 2, and Watch Dogs.

So yeah, while there is definetely problems in the industry that need to be addressed, I feel the positives still outweigh the negatives when it comes to gaming.

Let's see...

Market flooded with brainless, derivative, generic, ludicrously budgeted sequels. Publishers trying to screw every last cent out of us with ever increasing, mindblowing levels of unscrupulousness. The 'gaming media' who do nothing more than act as sycophantic mouthpieces for these publishers and developers rather than acting with a modicum of integrity putting tough questions to them and being marginally objective when reviewing. That's before we even get onto- *resists.urge.to.talk.about.xbo-*

Okay, I'm going to go, curl up in a corner and cry..

The industry has some great, big, throbbing issues, but it makes things that I like on a relatively consistent basis.

I can find enjoyable games easily and every now and then I come across some utterly delightful game that makes me feel privileged to have experienced it. There's plenty of crap, sure, but what industry doesn't produce a lot of crap along with the gold? Fortunately, nobody is making me buy the crap, so I generally don't.

I feel that the overall quality of games has increased drastically since I first started played them in the mid 90s.

Really, from my perspective, I think that's a reasonable place to be in.

So no, while I'm more than happy to acknowledge flaws, I'm certainly not one of the doomsayers.

My opinion...
Well, I think that the gaming industry when it comes to games is actually quite good. It feels like the slew of new IPs and games with bold ideas are growing. I like the Indie and F2P scene for that reason. AAA are less so, but IMO even EA and Ubisoft, who are looked at as bad AAA companies, do create gems that are better than people say they are. Rare, but they exist.

On the other hand, beyond game publishers the community and the press make we want to give up on gaming despite being my favorite hobby. Don't need to talk about the game journalists. The big reason why I'm on the verge of quitting gaming for good is the community. The toxicity in multiplayer games, the constant hating of me because one of my favorite games is the Sims 3 (because of my gender) and the overall elitism that is found in the gaming community. The Escapist is surprising for me as I'm finding more "intellectual people" (by my standards) than "trolls" and "haters". I've already lost track how many games I quit because of the community (TF2, Runescape, LoL just to name a few).

I might be a minority who tries to find the good in publishers and games, so my opinion might cause someone to hate of me.
