Normal the first runthrough and if I really like it I'll play it again on the hardest difficulty just for the challenge.

Since in most games the difficulty only makes the bad guys harder to kill, normal. If I'm playing a simulator like DCS Black Shark though, difficulty OVER 9000!!!
Yeah, it's strange how certain games thing that giving someone a little bit more health makes it harder. In Left 4 Dead 2, Expert mode has you constantly surrounded and the pressure on you all the time while on say Prototype it just gives the bad guys more health and gives you less.

Normal. If I die more than a couple of times on the same section, I lose momentum, which is detrimental to the experience.

Depends of the game. In a game like mass effect i play on hard, but in a game like bayonetta i play on normal.

I generally put the game on hard, and scale it back if I need to. Most of the time I prefer to get my ass kicked, because that in turn teaches me how to own harder. If I really like a game, I'll throw it on insane mode and beat the living daylights out of it (Mass Effect, FarCry, KotOR, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Oblivion).

I do the hardest mode first and then if I want to replay certain levels I will do them on normal.

Hard, because games are more fun when they're challenging, though I'll move it down to normal if I'm achievement farming and to impossible if I'm doing a second playthrough.

Easy for the first time, just so I can see how the story is and get used to the controls, and such. After that, then I'll up the difficulty if I feel like playing again.

Normal.

But after I beat that and know the layout of the game, it's on to hard and impossible!

Usually I'll play through the first time on normal, then switch over to easy if I just want to replay it for fun.

I'd prefer 'hard' if I could play on that difficulty. I play on 'normal' mostly to maintain some dignity.

I feel like if they're going to call it "normal" it's the game, the way it was originally intended to be played. I always default to normal.

Easy, because it makes me feel like a unstoppable killing machine...

Then I progress from there depending on how many times I go through the game...

I use easy when I'm under time constraints (like a rented or borrowed game). I use normal for a first playthrough, and hard only after I've already beaten it once and want a challenge.

I start out on normal, and if the game is worthy of another play-through, step it up to hard. I have gone to impossible before, but it isn't done very often.
