Easy for fighting games because I'm horrendous at 'em.
I still never figured out how anyone beats them on Lunatic. The sheer visual overload defeats me every time. I can't make sense of it all at once and react the way I want to.

I default to normal/hard. Hard is mostly for practice. I at least have a shot of reaching the final boss on normal unless it's Subterranean Animism (dammit Orin!)

I played easy for the longest time because I actually wanted to enjoy myself. But, as of late, I am doing more games on normal. I still enjoy myself, and the challenge is not frustrating.

I usually play on normal.

The only games I've played on hard or higher were horror games like Bioshock 1, Silent Hill 2, Dead Space, etc. Because I felt that horror combat would have to be hard in order for the monsters to scare the crap out of me... and that pretty much is the case... playing Dead Space on normal or easy is startle-worthy at best.

Now... the only game I've played on easy was Far Cry 2, and that was because all of the extra AI functionality (along with the physics) was too much for my PC to handle.

Whatever the achievements require. Otherwise normal. Though easy sometimes for fooling around in depending on the game. (like Oblivion for example)

I usually just play on normal but I am currently attempting to play WaW on veteran. Stupid grenades.

If it's a game I'm brand new to, I like to stick to normal so I don't get overwhelmed with the difficulty. If it's something I know I'm going to be good at (like a sequel to a game I played on hard; Mass Effect 1 & 2 come to mind), I bump the difficulty up right away so I don't get underwhelmed by how easy it seems on normal.

Normal. Then easy for achievements, then impossible for a try and back down to hard. Lets me know what I can do/expect from the game and my skills.

Almost always Normal, even when MW2 tells me I should go Hardened or Veteran on the time trial mission.
Screw you game! I'll go with whatever makes me feel most kickass!

p.s If you can't tell I'm one of those people who'd rather have fun that a hard time. XD

It took a while, but I just got the feel for it. Although, I find that I get pretty lucky every now and again. But then again 10 and on are just insane.

I usually end up playing one notch below the hardest difficulty level, so Normal if there is only 3 difficulty levels and Hard if there is 4.

It does really depend on the game as well, though. I'll pretty much always play a CoD game on Veteran.

Normal for regular gameplay (unless it turns out I suck too much at the game. i'm looking at you Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden Sigma). Easy for achievements/unlockables (unless otherwise required), why make grinding any harder than it has to be?

Hard--I like a challenge alongside the story of a game, although not so much of one that it becomes frustrating.

I often play better on Legendary/Insane then I do on Heroic/Hardcore but I usually playthrough on hardest

though I'm not afraid to bump the difficulty down if it becomes lame
