As troop recruitment levels have been dwindling lower and lower, the threat of a draft looms on the horizon, albeit far away. Even though a draft will most likely not be instituted, if it was, would you serve? If not, how would you avoid it? Personally I would serve, because I feel that if my nation needs me that much then I should go. However, I can see the other side of it, in which people don't think they should fight for ideals they don't necessarily believe in. Post your thoughts and comments, but please do not flame or troll.

The draft is what happens when you don't close the door.

Also, hell no.
Fighting a war you may not believe in against your will? The instances of friendly fire would rocket.
Having said that, it all depends on the context. At the moment, none of the Western Nations 'need' more soldiers, they simply want more soldiers to fight the wars that politicians have commited them to. Had Iraq been just across the Channel firing scuds at us every week then I might have felt differently.

I guess that would really depend. Would it be a draft to defend out homes and families from invaders or to invade innocent Iraq villages for oil.

*sigh*

Poor, poor Aries Tyr...

Anyways, Australia is a pretty rejected country; no-one (except the Japs, of course) actually wants the place.

As a result, we don't have any enemies, but we are America's puppet state, and we all know what that means.

So, I would like to say this: NO. NO. NO. NO.

I we had a Draft, a particular Prime minister -I won't say which- will be assassinated within the week.

Not to mention that no-one would actually vote pro-conscription anyway.

The way I see it, if a draft were to be implemented, I'd do my damn best to volunteer into one of the non-cannon fodder jobs, like Explosives and Ordinance Disposal, or in the motor pool. So yes, I'd join up if a draft was implemented, but only if.

If the alternative is death (by the hands of my countrymen), yes. Not like I have a choice. What a great soldier I'll make :p

Otherwise, no.

But then again, this isn't really an issue for me and probably never will be. My country hasn't put up an organized national defense against a direct threat in hundreds of years.

If there were a draft, I would go. The only other realistic options are jail or expatriation. Also, my grandfather would call me a pussy if I dodged the draft.

That being said, if any foreign power invaded my homeland, it'd be road trip time. With guns!

I Disagree!

Willing soldiers may be simply the stupider people, or more reckless, or more brave. In any case, all three could lead to them doing stupid things.

Unwilling soldiers, will fight just as hard not to die, and assuming they are the overweighing the value of their life, they may be better at protecting it. Of course, timid soldiers wouldnt make a great army, just less prone to dieing in stupid ways.

Given that being drafted would mean I was legally obligated to go unless I sawed off my index finger or faked the physical, I wouldn't have much choice since I'd like to stay in my home country.

So yes.

I voted for no, but hypothetically, if it was a war against a great evil, like WW2 or something & refusing wasn't an option, then I would sign up, but I'd refuse to be a grunt or any other kind of dumb cannon fodder.

If I had to serve my country in war, then I'd like to think I'd serve it in a position which would make best use of my skills & intelligence, like logistics or weapon development or any other position where I use my brain for the war effort rather than be put in an position where I'd had to kill someone 1 on 1.

If I was conscripted then I hope the government realises that there's there's hundreds of thousands of more aggressive & less intelligent people in the country to be used up before they need to parachute me behind enemy lines with a gun in my hands & the King's Shilling in my pocket.

Since when does the draft have anything to do with any specific political party?

On topic, I might theoretically go if there was actually a good reason to (like Hitler 2.0), but honestly I'd be a thoroughly useless soldier who would rather shoot himself than anyone else. Being mildly autistic doesn't help, either.

But if a draft is started for any of the U.S.'s current wars, I will change my name and move as far away from this country as possible. And possibly also organize an assassination of whoever made the decision.

ok how is Hitler worse than a guy that wants to set off a nuclear bomb in your country?
and basically wishes that everyone you love would die by beheading.
Let me poke some huge gaping hole in you logic. It will be easy.

- Saddam Husein never did want to set off nuclear bomb in America. You are thinking of thinking of Al Qaeda. Saddam hated Al Qaeda and killed their members on a regular basis.

- Saddam Hussein was not a Fundamentalist Muslin at all. He was actually a very bad Muslin. Iraq was a Secular Dictatorship before America got there. What does Secular mean? That means that Saddam was okay with Jews, Christians, Muslims, and the like. As far as Religion went he was very tolerant. What he was not tolerant of was people messing with his Political power. He killed people for that one. He was also very tolerant of women getting jobs, not wearing Burkha's, and getting an education. He was a killing bastard, but he was not what you think he was, a mad man with a nuclear bomb.

- Saddam NEVER had Weapons of Mass Destruction. If you still believe that crap I feel very sorry for you.

- Hitler killed literally tens of millions of people. He set up death camps and extermination chambers. He was literally trying to take over the whole world. He even had pretty well laid out plans to get to America and do us in too. We just got to him first with the Russians and the Brits to kick his ass first.

So stop believing the Right Wing propaganda machine. It is just sad to see.

I'm a Canadian, we haven't had the draft since WW1 and are unlikely too except in the event of an outright invasion. Were that the case, I would serve.

EDIT: On top of that my Asthma, Flat Feet and Allergies would make me unfit for duty, so I suppose the question is irrelevant to me.
