Like most of you have said, it really depends on the war.

If it's justifiable based on my beliefs I'd do it in a heartbeat, but if it's just so some politician or CEO can line his pockets with more gold, then they can kiss my "Un-American" ass.

This war isn't about Al Quaeda, its about Hegemony. Damn near every war the US has fought outside of the two World Wars has been.

Secondly, those people don't have even remotely enough power to make those wishes come true.

Exactly, it's nice to think that everything will be happiness, chocolate, and puppies, but that's not entirely realistic...

I think this would be a more interesting topic if you'd asked whether people think a draft is just or not, period, not whether they *personally* would serve in the army under threat of imprisonment. The one is a question of principle, the other is a question about your personal circumstances.

I can't really vote because women have never been drafted into the military, at least, but let's consider a much more interesting and pressing question:

Both current presidential candidates have expressed support for a period of MANDATORY "community service" for young people, possibly in exchange for receiving federal aid with college money or something along those lines. I have been avoiding researching it too much, because my opinion of this scheme became set when the words "Mandatory public service" were uttered. The draft is extremely unlikely because conscript armies are massively ineffectual and inefficient--the people most against the draft are actual military leaders. However, I find this very real prospect of a another sort of draft very troubling indeed.

What was that? Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a Democrat, was the one who first started the Draft in 1940, as well as the Selective Service System. It was Nixon (Republican) who ended the draft and Ford (another Republican) who ended the Selective Service System. Carter, a Democrat, was the one who reinstated the Selective Service Act in 1980.

Now, it may not be wholly a Democrat thing, but large parts of it certainly are, thus making bigcountry's statement not 'retarded' in the least.

You can't excatly refuse the draft because otherwise it wouldn't be a draft besides as for me It would be very unlikly for me to be placed in a frontline combat role due to not meeting basic requirements in other words I could not even enlist for the job.

As if Republicans in The Senate and The House did not support it. Come on, be realistic here. The Draft back then got support form both parties, not just Democrats. This is not just a Presidential thing. If Republicans wanted to stop the Draft from happening then they most likely could have, one way or another. So yes, it is retarded.

It's a draft, I don't think I have any choice.
Unless I run away to *shudders* Australia or something.

Also I'd like to jump into the whole "Draft being democratic" argument and point out that many countries other than America had the draft as well. I beleive Australia had a draft in effect during the vietnam period. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

The fact of the matter is as others have pointed out, the current twenty or so wars we're involved in or that directly effect our foreign interests can all be kept at arm's length (forgive any insensitivty about 9/11, 7/7 etc but they're not on a national scale). Basically they'd never enforce conscription in these circumstances.
Now if a country with a strong economy, a strong military etc attacked and total war broke out (a war economy, everyone drops everything and helps out) then I'd sign up in a heartbeat. It'd be the least I could do. The people who would say no in that situation are insane, forget patriotism, it's instinct that drives us to want to defend what we have. Would those people invite burglars in for tea and biscuits?
This whole arguement is totally flawed though because of the invention of nuclear warheads. With such a deterrant we will never go to war with our peers and thus a state of total war and therefore conscription will never, ever happen unless some freakin hippy lobby persuades Brown and co. to scrap the Trident program.
In summary: if there was a draft, hell yes! But there'll never be one.
