I have absolutely no knowledge on the subject but ,my memory does seem to recollect a moment when "scientists" mused that the 1st atomic test may actually start a chain reaction that could ignite the entire earths atmosphere. They detonated it anyway.
The accidental discovery of the actual power of the H-bomb isn't all that confidence inspiring.
Nor the numerous atmospheric nuclear tests, for over a decade, and the untold damage that shit did to the planet.
But I must admit that nuclear science was a massive leap in human technological history, the image of some one walking into a medieval forge and demanding a tommy gun springs to mind. And using hindsight when it was still in its infancy is been rather facetious.

Well it's refreshing to see that most of you while having little personal knowledge of high energy physics or general relativity seem to trust that scientist working at the LHC do. I was just curious what people just like yourselves thought about it. Thanks for chiming in.

EDIT: Some of you should be careful about repeating things you saw in NOVA specials from memory though :D

Life's too short to care if you die tomorrow. Live for today and prepare for tomorrow if it comes. As explained we probably can't do it. I'm not overly concerned.
Life really isn't that short. Stick to that philosophy and your going to have a rough time of it in 20 years when you don't have a career, and the prospect of ever retiring is a pipe dream.

People in developed countries are living longer (a trend that seems likely to continue) and population growth is slowing. With the care of the elderly costing as much as it does and less money to spare for them because of less youth producing tax revenues by working it seems likely a bit more of the burden of care for the elderly is going to fall on them and their life savings.
I wasn't trying to be dismissive completely to the future. I'm so invested in it, in fact, I'd be tens of thousands of dollars in debt with no career if I gave it up and lived for the day in earnest. If you lived like it was your last every day soon enough it would become so. I just was pointing out that it's better to enjoy each day for itself and to still put times and dates on the calendar. I'll do what I can but I'll leave stuff I don't understand or have control over to the professionals. I'm no chicken little.

I have a background in physics, and I can tell you it is impossible for the LHC to create a black hole which would destroy Earth. Even in the remote chance that a black hole is formed, it would have such a ridiculously small mass that it would be unable to attract anything. It would then quickly 'evaporate' due to Hawking's radiation.

I'm not a scientist but I don't think black holes work like that.
They are scientists so I think they know what they are doing, despite popular cinema, scientists are actually extremely responsible with their experiments.

No, any black holes created would be too small to survive for more then a few milliseconds...

Unless we create a Particle accelerator so big that it engulfs the solar system, even then I would have some doubts...

So there's absolutely nothing to worry about, the scientists know what there doing, and my cousin works there...
The very first post in the thread, and already everything has been said. The Pox upon you blasted ninjas, keeping me from showing off what little physics I know :p

Look, if you want to believe that a black hole could actually be created, wouldn't it be wiser to just kill yourself now? Just sayin', cuz being sucked into a black hole would take almost forever, thanks to that special theory of relativity...
It would take forever to the external observer, however with time distortion, it certainly won't take forever for you. Although the radiation would almost certainly fry you, unless it was a supermassive blackhole, in which case you are so screwed that you shouldn't even bother.

I'm pretty sure time dilation affects the person closer to massive objects, ie while a year passes on earth, only half as much time would pass for another person close to the black hole (example, no actual math). Continuing on from that assumption, a second on earth would entail an eternity for the person falling into the black hole.
As for radiation, yeah, you'd be fried, literally.
