Two of gaming's milestone RPG's call Bethesda home, and with the announcement of Bethesda working on a "new project" *cough cough Fallout 4* and moving on from 'Skyrim', I figured now, more than ever, would be the ideal time to start THIS debate again. Which franchise do you, the gamer, prefer? 'The Elder Scrolls' or 'Fallout'? And hey, why end there? Once you vote, go ahead and leave a post telling the community why you prefer one over the other. Don't worry about giving a thorough explanation (although please go ahead if you so desire), this can be as simple as: "I prefer Elder Scrolls because Sweetrolls." Go ahead, knock yourselves out!

Eh, I'll have to go with TES. For now, that is. I like Fallout but I think I prefer TES games right now. I should note that I haven't played New Vegas, so I might change my mind after I do that. Fallout 3 was just a bit...meh. It felt like a post apocalyptic Oblivion - played it once and never really wanted to pick it up ever again. At least Oblivion I could try out another time. Morrowind I would and do. So, as I said, TES for me for now. We'll see how Fallout 4 goes.

Sweetrolls is a very good argument, however I do love the Elder Scrolls series slightly more than Fallout, simply due to the fact it's been in my life longer and I have a soft spot for bows, the night mother and stealing horses.

Skyrim was the first modern Beth game I played, so I owe that loyalty, but its only my third favourite game. Fallout 3 is my favourite game of all time ever, it's just amazing in every aspect. As much as I think Skyrim was good, I didn't like Oblivion nearly as much. Fallout had an amazing atmosphere, great humour which wasn't overboard, and interesting items. Skyrim, while trying to break away from cliches, is still at best pretty generically fantasy.

I haven't played a Fallout game proper despite intending to, but I imagine it would be very tough for one of them to trump Oblivion as one of my favourite games of all time. Plus I'm pretty partial to high fantasy; swords, bows and cat-people are where it's at. However, Skyrim turned out to be a massive disappointment for me and I haven't been able to get into Morrowind enough to judge it on its own merits, so Fallout as a whole could very well usurp The Elder Scrolls for me when I finally do get around to trying it out because I'm not particularly attached to TES series anymore; just Oblivion.

You're making people choose one or the other! That's so cruel!

Seriously, this is a very tough choice. I've loved all the Fallout games (except that console knock-off that was just a reskin of BG Dark Alliance, which, incidentally, was also made of suck).

But TES is also awesome because magic, lore & politics, Khajiit, Argonian Maids...

Hmm... I think I'll go with TES.

Fallout, easily. With the exception of Morrowind, the settings of all TES games I've dabbled in were incredibly boring. I could never get into them. And even with Morrowind, the mechanics were too much of a bear for me to enjoy. I adore the Fallout games and their setting, and I can actually play them for dozens of hours, rather than the maybe 20 I can take from TES before getting tired of it and uninstalling, never looking back.

Fallout, easily. While I don't hate the Elder Scrolls series by any stretch of the imagination, I just like everything about Fallout a lot more than Elder Scrolls.

Fallout 3 and Oblivion were utter trash.

New Vegas was good and I haven't played Skyrim (Don't have a 360 nor a PC that can run it at a decent FR). Since I love the era, I'll say Fallout.

TES was always a bit too generic fantasy for me and the Fallout universe felt more unique in terms of the interesting world it created and the hilariously dark dialogue and quests. +1 for fallout.

TES has its content spread too thin in order to have a giant map, and the unbalanced mechanics+level scaling creates a godawful playing experience because of the sheer number of times I've ended up in a state where I can't beat the mooks, let alone the pseudo bosses.

On the other hand I'm not particularly happy about the world building or characters they did in Fallout 3 (I'm not giving them credit for New Vegas, though I will for the DLC), and while I expect core gameplay to improve (even if they continue to insist on level scaling, they're getting better at it), I think all the positive feedback they got about Fallout 3 is going to prevent them from ever making an actual Fallout game.

I think they suffer from some kind of uncanny valley effect, they're so damn close to greatness that it pisses me off, if they were more mediocre I'd probably have more fun instead of raging. (But then, Skyrim was a major step in the right direction, so if they make it up the far side the end result is going to be incredible).

I saw someone describe Skyrim as "being the size of an ocean with the depth of a puddle."
I tend to agree with that.
Granted, I've only played Oblivion and Skyrim(heavilly modded in both cases), and neither has managed to draw me in and keep my interest for long.
I bought the Fallout games. I got Skyrim for free. I'm still playing FO:NV, while Skyrim is collecting dust on my harddrive.
That said, Bethesda did alot of good in Skyrim(still despise the skills/perks system though), and I look forward to see them bring it into the next Fallout.

If Bethesda made New Vegas this decision might be harder.

You see, I don't like Fallout 3. There is no way in a million years Bethesda is going to make a fallout game that is better than their Elder Scrolls games. Fallout 3 sucked and was no where near as good as Fallout: New Vegas, Bethesda should just give Fallout to Obsidian.

Now, The Elder Scrolls games are amazing. I loved Oblivion when I picked it up on ps3 and couldn't stop playing it for a while. Then I got it on pc with mods, so many hours in that game. Same with Skyrim, except I got it on pc first, no ps3(thank God). I have 430 hours on Skyrim on steam. Morrowind was decent, I wish that I had it when it came out because I'm sure I would have loved it. It didn't hold up so well. The combt is just so bad, and you do a lot of combat in the TES games.

You should really put Fallout 3 because tha s the only Fallout Bethesda has done and Bethesda shouldn't get credit for the other, better, Fallout games.

First of all, I'd like to point out that there is a sweet roll in Fallout 3. You get it for your birthday!

Anywho, I voted for the Fallout universe, even though I wasn't super fond of Bethesda's only true entry into it, Fallout 3. I've put over a hundred hours into each Oblivion and Skyrim, and I just can't get into them. They just aren't engaging to me in any way whatsoever, and I've tried damn hard to enjoy them. Granted, I'm pretty open about the fact that I find that style of the fantasy genre to be fairly boring and unappealing.

Not saying the Elder Scrolls games are bad games... just that they're not really the right sort for me.

They say you never forget your first...

That's why I have to go with "The Elder Scrolls" because "Morrowind" was the first of the Bethesda RPGs I ever played.

And as an old table-top D&D player, it was, for me at the time, about as close as one could get to having the PC as a DM.

Even though I love Skyrim, I kind of like random exploring better in Fallout games. I'm not fully sure why, I just like of like the lone survivor wanderer feel over the mystical knight medieval wanderer feel.

If at all possible Bethesda should never touch Fallout again. That way I can safely ignore their games without getting an ulcer over what their doing to one of my favorite series.

That and Skyrim was almost fun if you had a bow that hit so hard it broke the laws of physics.

Elder Scrolls is just bland, shallow, derivative fantasy. Fallout has a pedigree that makes it more believable, and the lore is solid enough that even Bethesda can't screw it up with their shit writing.

Fallout FTW. Although if I'm going to be honest, I would have preferred that Bethesda never got the rights to the Fallout IP -- almost any other publisher could have done a better job with it technically.
