There has been much talk of the next generation of consoles lacking any kind of a hard copy. While all of these rumors are yet to be confirmed, I for one will be very, very disappointed if they are true. While i know it is merely regaining the production cost, I will not pay $70 for a game. Ever. All of mine I have gotten from either used game retailers or local pawn shops for under $30. While I can understand the convenience of purely digital copies for someone with a decent income, I for one am apposed to it. please vote and share your side of the issue.

Well, the games industry has always seen itself as "better" than most others and as such acts offended by the very idea of used games and second hand sales (if the car industry can get over it, so can you guys, suck it up). However, it is VERY doubtful hardcopies will go away any time soon. Retailers are still quite influential and will not allow it to happen. Digital Distribution is the future, but its current incarnation is too expensive, restrictive and impractical to completely replace hardcopies.

The real issue I will have with it is that I like having a hard copy of a game. It allows me to lend it to friends, trade it, or resell it, as well as play it on a new system after the old one dies in a horrible burst of flames.

If they go head-long into this model and find out we're buying it, they'll certainly come up with some way of making sure we still have access to cheap games. I think the video game industry is mature enough at this point to realize how much of its consumer base doesn't want to or can't pay full price for games.

...Of course, if they start this and we all buy into it and they make a ton of money with it, then they'll ignore the people who won't pay and gaming will become a hobby for rich people. And there won't be hard copies of discs, so pirates won't be able to get around this.

...Until hackers break the new console and find a way to download illegal digital copies for free. There will surely be sites popping up that will host these. Because there always are.

Personally, I don't think people are going to go for this model. A lot of PC gamers like Steam, and console gamers like buying small games online, but most gamers are not these people.

...Unless Nintendo starts it with the Wii.

I dislike not having a hard copy, its as if I don't own the game but sadly that might be the point.
Yep. That's the point. The game industry is moving towards not you owning the game, but paying for the rights to play it.

Tis why I bought a Store copy of TF2, and not one from steam. But then I got over it, and started using digital distribution that way I dont have to transfer all my games to a new computer, just log into my account.

It'd make games cheaper.. But I like to have a hard copy. And what if somehow your games are corrupted, or you're hacked, etc? Too many more issues.

Then you have to re-download from there site and hope they fixes it. It's more hassle for us and less for them if something breaks. There's no real return feature.

360 put some of there games on demand you download to your hard drive for 20$ but yu can go to game stop and get it for 5$ cheaper for used and have the hard copy and it takes up less disk space.

I am a fan of digital copys its worked well for with on steam, where the weekend deals have built my list of games up to about 30 with out breaking the bank (66% off FTW)
I also make use of the PSPs network, not because of cost but how easy it makes mobile gamming not having to keep all your UMDs on you when u want to play different games.

It will be a very long time before and if the consoles move toward 100% digital download.

By 2011 that would mean losing over 90% of the world wide user base.
PC games are a little further along that path, but I don't think 10 gigabyte downloads before you can do anything with your ps4 or xbox480 will sell. Nintendo would face the additional problem of kiddies not having creditcards.
