Every now and then when I am reading the forums a post jumps out, like a beacon of light in a dark alleyway. These posts usually contain a high amount of quality or content, where you can see the poster took a lot of time to give a proper answer. These kind of posts should be awarded somehow.

My suggestion is that every user can award a post. Awarded posts could become highlighted; more visible and easier to spot in a thread. Also, the poster of those awarded posts gets an number of awards stat next to his name.

Now, before you say this is going to be abused, let me add a few restrictions to the awards. First of all users can only give 1 award each day. Next, users cannot award the same person twice. This should balance things out.

I think this could work. What is your opinion on this matter?

I'm not a big fan of these kinds of systems. Is it not enough to get quoted a whole bunch?

I've been arguing for a Facebook style "like" button since I joined, since the low content rule makes it so you can't just say you agree with somebody's post unless you have something to add to it, even though agreement actually does add to a discussion under the right circumstances. Everytime I suggest it, though, people either think I'm talking about Reddit style upvoting, or see the word "facebook" and go ballistic. The standard argument is it would turn each post into a popularity contest, which is not at all how the like button works on Facebook, but this site is so full of people who refuse to use it that it's no surprise they have no idea how one of the features work.

Besides, these forums are pretty much one big popularity contest anyway, as evidenced by the minor shitstorm over Vault101's ban, and the way members of a certain pair of usergroups tend to dominate the discussion :p

Nooooo.

Can't we just leave this place free of dodaads and just... talk about stuff with one another?

Isn't a well thought out post its own reward?

I was sick of those systems in the various other forums I posted in. Hell, I think facepunch has it the worst: you can write out a perfectly reasonable and structured argument about something and all you'd get was a bunch of 'dumb' ratings. Really unfriendly.

Eh, it'd still be abused to shit.
Someone forum famous would post "Lol, ice cream." and that'd get about 500 "likes" in a second or something.
So nah, I'm against it and we don't really need it.

I have a feeling that would really quickly devolve into a circle jerk of the "old guard" really fast... Or turn into a youtube like monstrosity o_O

Not to mention all the crap you could get if you hold an unpopular opinion :/

No, there already a problem with some people thinking we are elite, that sort of system will only boost our ego in the wrong way.
Beside with a system lik that, everyone (well those who are desperate) will start making their comment all witty and long just to get that award. Ok that may sound like a good thing but I don't think it's good that a comment is made to get that award and not as a genuine comment.

Like the many times this question was asked before this thread, no. If you like a post, express it in words. Like...

I am usually against these systems, but with the restrictions you mentioned it could work.

Don't you tell me what to do! You're not my Dad!

OT: I could go either way. If a like function appeared I wouldn't complain. Assuming my posts got lots of likes. If they didn't, oh how I would complain. I would complain so loud.

As opposed to now? How would a "like" button change the amount of crap you took for stating an unpopular opinion?

Aaaaand I see my prediction has come true. Seriously, guys, like buttons don't do anything negative. At least not unless they have an accompanying "dislike" button. It's just an alternative to quoting someone and writing "this," one that has the benefit of virtually eliminating a very common form of low content post without needing a rule to enforce it.

Yeah, I am actually in favour of those. However, I think the Escapist still won't adopt it, since they want to focus on discussion and a like button isn't conductive to one. I'm pretty sure somebody else said it before, too (Nasrin, maybe?).

Lies!

A recent one did not depict Mao and thus you seemingly vanished from the forum for a brief period! It was surreal and depressing to lack Fappy in off topic!

OT: Nah I really don't think we need that kind of system at all, as if Daystars ego doesn't get stroked enough we need some way to award people, the feast of intellectual debate should be it's own delicious reward.

Assuming it worked by giving awards where you had "top comments" or "lowest/worst comments" then it'd terrible. It wouldn't really change anything, but it'd be like sanctioning pointing and laughing at anyone who holds a different viewpoint rather than discussing it. It wouldn't be a huge deal in practice, but now a days people at least have to discuss it.

Not that I care, I'm sure you all love me and my wonderful ideas... Right?... Guys?

Erm..."like button" as in how Facebook does it - you don't have "dislike" or "downvote" or whatever. So you won't really have "worst comments" but...you'd have comments and better comments, though.

I'm not interested in this place becoming YouTube, okay? I come to the Escapist for the clean looking forums and the awesome posters, and I go to YouTube if I want to use a system similar to what you're saying. It's just the way I've looked at the site.
