From the prequels I expect Ep. VII to carry over battle choreography, and overaged actors way past any sort of relevance from the original trilogy. Hopefully it will give us some new stars like the original trilogy did.

As for quality? Basically what Zhukov said. But as long as it has colours and stuff moving around, people will be entertained, so hopefully at least slightly better than that.

Nothing. I am expecting nothing from this movie, because last time I got burned when I was expecting something from a Star Wars movie. I was "expecting" an epic space battle to rival Return of the Jedi. What I got was Obi and Anakin talking in their cockpits while robot termites ate their ships. I "expected" the Jedi to go down like warriors, what I got was a bunch of people dying like they'd never picked up a lightsaber. So no, I'm not expecting much from The Force Awakens.

I am, however, hoping that it lives up to what these trailers are promising. It certainly looks like Star Wars. Also, I would love it if it turned out that Rey's real name was Jaina and she just changed it to get away from her legacy, as that would be a nice nod to the Expanded Universe. I know that won't happen, but still.
I am excited for the movie and it does look good, but I am braced for it to be a let down, because the last three times were too much of a lesson.

A good movie, for starters. Yes, some fanboys will get pissy over the little things, but who cares? As long as it's entertaining (in a good way), I'll be happy.

I'm expecting a nostalgia bait call back to the original trilogy, specifically a movie that's basically A New Hope repackaged. I expect that it will at least be passably good, but it'll feel like we're just doing the same thing all over again. I mean this is JJ Abrams we're talking about, he's a massive Star Wars nerd. So it'll probably be a good example of a Star Wars film, but it'll fail to brake any ground in a narrative point. Also I expect the fan base to pitch a fit over anything event that they don't like.

My current biggest fear is them doing PC IN SPACE, other than that I don't think it will be very good and will lean too much on nostalgia.
I don't think having "a" black person qualifies as pc run amuck.

OT: I don't expect much at all. It will be extremely sub-par, but it will make money anyway, so it doesn't matter. After all, the prequels did. It'll be Marvel in space, essentially.

I'm expecting "Marvel tier".

In other words, I expect to be sufficiently entertained for the duration of the film while my frontal lobes are being flooded with loud noises and flashing lights, then to almost completely forget that it exists roughly 13 hours after leaving the cinema.

So comparing it to the previous films... roughly Return of the Jedi quality.
Are we talking "Luke, Vader, and Emperor scenes" quality, or "everything else in RotJ" quality?

There's a pretty sizable gap between those, and since I'm anything but a diehard Wars fan, I don't think I could take 2+ hours of the latter. I just....couldn't.

And just like that:

I've restored the balance to the poll.(Watch and learn, Kenobi!)

OT: I'm probably on the side of most people here, and that is hoping that it will suck less than prequels.

It's not the having a black person, it's the fear of them creating an obvious strawman for "black people/women can't be a jedi", of course it will be bullshit canon-wise, but I don't trust the writers that much.
Why would they say women/minorities can't be Jedi? I'm a little confused.

The black guy is clearly a stormtrooper that breaks free and becomes an inexperienced Jedi. I don't see anything pc about that. Race and gender seem inconsequential, it doesn't seem preachy. You could have a white actor play the same part and it would be the same thing. So why does it matter?

It'll probably be on par with the Star Trek reboot (the first one). So a solid, entertaining space adventure. Nothing I've seen from the trailers makes me think this is going to be outright terrible.

I desperately want it to be good. I'm going to try and go into it with no expectations though. I'd like to see less flashy lightsabre choreography, and more of a focus on character interaction in duels. I'd like to see a plot that makes some god damn sense, and isn't a rehash of the OT.

I find all of this to be somewhat threatened by the new Sith. I don't know anything about what people have dissected from watching the adverts so far but the new dark side guy looks risky to me. It seems clear he isn't human, he actually kind of reminds me of 'Bane' from Batman 3, his lightsaber is just one giant attention-grab.

They show an image of him activating his claymore thingo in a dark forest, I mean what are we supposed to take from that? The only way I see this working is if they give him a huge backstory with some real anguish in his past that has lead him to the dark side, because otherwise he is just going to look like some kind of panther-cum-ninja galactaBane. I mean even if his dark side'ness came out of a rough childhood that would just make him more Bane... ... Well that was quite a tangent.

I'm expecting nothing much because I've never seen a Star Wars movie but plan to watch both trilogies before I go see TFA.
Abrams has always been a Star Wars fan so I expect he'll do the franchise some justice, much more than he ever gave a flying fuck about Star Trek. You lucky bastards.

My personal ranking of the Star Wars films is as follows:

6) Attack of the Clones
5) The Phantom Menace
4) The Empire Strikes Back
3) Revenge of the Sith
2) Return of the Jedi
1) A New Hope

While I still have my head, in light of this list, my personal guess is that The Force Awakens will be closest to Revenge of the Sith in quality (i.e. "good"), but close to A New Hope in terms of overall story structure and style.

Either that or he'll bring earthly religion into it as a deus ex machina* and make us all want to walk off cliffs like lemmings.

If you haven't seen the Star Wars movies, well, lucky you, but you should really watch the original trilogy (4, 5, 6) first, so you can appreciate the original tone of the movies. I have a feeling that if you watch the prequel trilogy first you might ruin your whole experience.

4) The Empire Strikes Back
It's interesting that you rank what many people seem to think of as the best Star Wars film in fourth place, behind a Hayden Christensen film.

I'm not trying to imply anything, it's just interesting. If I were to make a similar list I think it would be:

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) A New Hope
3) Return of the Jedi
4) Phantom Menace
5) Clone Wars*
6) Revenge of the Sith*

* The only reason I put Clone Wars ahead of Revenge of the Sith is because I watched it way more times and it therefore occupies more of my mind...

I reckon it will be closer to the reboots, but not in the same way. Instead of making some obnoxious characters, forced romance and goofy comedy, it will instead be revealed in an extremely bland way with poor execution over all. As someone already mentioned, safe and forgettable.

Or who knows, maybe it will do even more stupid shit and I can look forward to it giving many people the shits.
