The characters in Friends are not technically archetypes. They are people who have been imbued with all the traits that people think or fear they have, when they are thinking kindly of themselves. They are all meant to be identifiable with at different times.
Joey is sexually attractive but dim.
Chandler is witty but impolitic.
Ross is clever but socially awkward.
Monica is obsessive and competitive but has low self-esteem.
Rachel is is spoilt but hard-working.
Phoebe is artistic but childishly naive.
...but all are good natured, kind and generous. They are the equivalent of those astrology readings where every word applies to everyone.
We are not so different as you think.

I'm not a fan of the show. I also dislike it because it went up against Whose Line is it Anyway? I know I wasn't in the country at the time, but my point is still one I hold.
