The writing is awful, the new character is a recycled Dante and even half the stages and bosses are recycled. They were so tied up to Dante that they make him a playable character for half the game.
At least DMC 3+4's writing knew it was awful and made fun of itself while DmC tries to take itself seriously
Is that the new flavor?

I am in favor of ironically bad writing (when its well done), but its fun to see how the justification has morphed from "the writing was never important", to "it was always ironic".

And no, I don't agree with the assessment that it was bad on propose. If that were the case, this forum would not be full of people trying to convince me Classic Dante is some sort of complex character with a tragic arc, instead of a douchebag that acts like he is too cool for life and speaks in one-liners. The Japanese version of Duke Nukem...

I don't pretend that Dante was ever deep, but with scenes like the above it's pretty clear that the writers knew it was ridiculous and overplaying it for the fun of it and i enjoyed it for that.

The series was never ironic. Just Hammy. It was deliberately over acted to the point of silliness. DMC 3 and DMC 4 were incredibly hammy, enjoyable so.

Can I get both or neither? How about a reboot of the reboot?
From a story standpoint, it got too convoluted by Devil May Cry 4, they had no idea where they were going with it and what they wanted to accomplish (hence why reboot in the first place).

I understand what Ninja Theory was trying to do with the reboot Dante in DmC, but it's silly and the angel/demon aspect is just horrible from character standpoint. How do we make this character more relatable, take out all essence of his humanity? I would have preferred they left the human portion in. I also prefer the humor of the original Dante (number 3), the humor in DmC feels immature.

So retcon everything in the franchise (both the new and the old), except number 3 and go from there.
Also give it to a different developer.

Well I'll admit I've only play the first game in the original and only to the first Dark Knight boss.
Of the two, I preferred DMC and am looking forward to a sequel.

I'm as hardcore as Devil May Cry fans come but I'd rather see DmC 2 over a Devil May Cry 5. Devil May Cry 1 is my favorite game of all time but devil may cry 2 was weak, devil may cry 3 saw the loss of all of Dante's cool points and turned him into a teenage mutant ninja turtle, and devil may cry 4 was a weak game that you had to play through twice to beat. Dmc made young Dante a street punk which is a hell of a lot closer to how I've always imagined him. Dmc2 would give that universe a chance to grow and Dante to return to being the bad ass we all know and love from the original devil may cry series. Besides their all set up to retell devil may cry 3 and seeing that game with these graphics and Dmc's kick ass combat would be amazing.

I have only ever played Devil May Cry through the demos. I've also seen most of Devil May Cry 3 through video. I've got no knowledge between the two gameplay wise, but personally I feel that they should keep improving on the new DMC then bringing back the old one. Plus I prefer the character model for dante than the old one.

I would like to see a DMC2, I found it odd Capcom went from 1 to 3.

Jokes aside I'd pick the series with a better Dante, better gameplay, and better writing. 3 actually had a decent story inbetween the moments of crazy, obviously it's not some deep artistic thing, but it was enough to give Dante daddy issues character development. 4's story is pretty bad, but the boss banter is the best in the series, the videos are posted often even in non-DMC topics because people find them entertaining. It's much better than FUCK YOUUUUAHHRGAPBBBHHHH. Not to mention since each fully capitalized DMC game improves over the next DMC5's gameplay should be even more amazing. I'd be happy if they mix 3's variety of weapons and styles with 4's ability to switch on the fly.

The wasn't much to DMC1 Dante's personality. He shittalked the bosses a bit and got a ham handed romantical scene with no character-building inbetween. DMC3+4 mostly improved on the shittalking and mixed it with some over the top personality traits. I don't see how that's a loss of all the cool points.

Maybe you could elaborate a bit on what points you found cool about DMC1 Dante. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, i'm just interested why you prefer him.
