Does anybody remember Mythrandia [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Mythrandia] the mighty 1337 wizard who once wrote an entire book on these very forums? Also known as the Defender of the Shard of Herald from Asheron's Call(probably), this sorcerer was probably the most memorable escapist I have ever seen. His cryptic words were far above the comprehension of my puny intellect and also that of the mods apparently because after a month of spreading enlightenment he was struck with the mighty banhammer. But what a month it was, reading one of his posts was like walking into a room filled with marshmallows where dwarves competed against Jedi in sack races. You had no idea what you were looking at, but it was too amazing to look away.

So does anybody remember this warlock? I'm also asking because I'm wondering about the longevity of memorable forum events/users in the collective consciousness of the Escapist.
Also, does anybody remember any other memorable times in Escapist history?

I remember him! I don't know how he lay dormant for nine years, but man, he's up there with Zeel in terms of "Memorable Ex-Escapists".

I read every single word of one of his posts, and I somehow regret it and don't regret it at the same time.

I vaguely remember that user.
The thing I remember the most about them (apart from the insane ranting they always used to do), was that they had a 2003 join date.
Probably the oldest join date I've ever seen here.

Longevity wouldn't be very long, I would say.

For example, I remember Vault101's spelling (or lack thereof). I remember Karutomaru's nonsense. I remember Boudica's craziness. I remember Zeel's antics. And I remember the way Mortai Gravesend could seemingly argue forever, and never gave up on an argument.

But the more time passes since these users got banned, the more people join this forum who've never heard of them.

(Also, it occurs to me just now that we haven't had any really notable users, like those above, for quiet a while now. Except Daystar I suppose.)

Danyal was sorta memorable, I guess. Always starting new threads in the hope this time people would agree it was ok to hate Muslims and have sex with animals.

People are still in the grieving process for @j-e-f-f-e-r-s, so is Nintendo I hear.

He was suitably notable I would gather, from the amount of times he was and is directly referenced.

@EternalNothingness springs to mind as well, I'm not sure how many others have GIFs and a reputation dedicated to them.

I'd even put forth @thesupremegamer, more than one person has been perturbed by his spelling. He's pretty new and has a penchant for responding to every single person that posts in a thread of his.

As far as a positive note, I'd probably nominate Caramel Frappe. I've seen a respectable amount of folks acknowledging public service of his.

Shoot, I've even seen people talking about DVS_BSTRD or however you spell his crazy name.

For some reason when I read the word notable, it seems like notorious might better apply. Particularly when people recall others based on a specific trait, as you have.

Might just be me.

You're probably right.

Anyway, out of interest, (and since you're the only user so far in this thread with a 2013 join date,) I'd be interested to know how many users you recognize, out of the ones I've named in my post above.
I'm wondering if there are any new (or new-ish) users who still know who those guys are.

Also, it would be interesting to know how many banned users are actually still with us, but have assumed a different identity.
I guess we'll never know, since if they identified themselves, they'd be banned (again).
Then again, as you say, most users who become well-known here, become well-known because of a specific trait. And if a new user started to exhibit that same trait, it would be kinda obvious it's the same person.

Maxthereaper started a cult of apathy and sociopath's back when he was here. It was the cool thing to be seen as unfeeling and uncaring about everything as possible. I think the funniest thing about what was Max wasn't even entirely serious when he did it. It was kind of like his "thing" and then lot's of other people started being like it.

I remember when calling people trolls wasn't against the rules so every troll thread had about a dozen replies saying either "Obvious troll is obvious" or "Report and move on". The latter was always amusing because by the tenth person they still didn't see the irony.

There was the March Mayhem when everybody went ballistic because Zynga was in it. The amount of arguments over that was almost unreal. At times it made all of the gender threads look tame.

As for memorable users, I can recall most of them, unless the reason they were well known almost purely from their involvement in a user group. Hell, I can remember the two Darth's who were a married couple and named their child Leia.

Looking at your almost-2013 join date, that line made me feel like I've been here forever, and I haven't even been here nearly as long as some other people (like, say, Legion up there).

OT: Karutomaru.

Forever and always Karutomaru.

While EternalNothingness seems to have a knack for drawing moderator wrath to other people in his threads, they generally run out of steam or get locked by the third or fourth page. Karutomaru threads almost consistently were derailed by the second or third page and then went on until page fifteen until they were finally taken down by a mod. It was pretty glorious. Though by the end it seemed a bit sad as well, since he had gone through the same exact schtick like, once or twice before over the course of something like three years before he joined The Escapist, even complete with thinking Capcom is the greatest set of human minds on this planet Earth and that Ubisoft are the spawns of the devil.

Ahh, the good old days :p

Max could be kind of a dick sometimes though... but, in fairness; we call can be kind of dicks sometime.

So many prominent Escapists come and gone, it's hard to keep track of them.

But, I still remember the days of Furburt and Hubilub and the awful ego-stroking at the time. Honestly, The Escapist is a better place since then.

I found the site in 2009, and joined in 2010, so I caught pretty much the tailend of Maxthereaper, Furburt, Hubilub, etc. etc.

Since then, I think Daystar has been the only poster with a "cult" around him, and even that's fading away.

I infiltrated Daystar's cult and destroyed it from the inside. He's easily seduced, it turns out.

Holy crap, j-e-f-f-e-r-s got whacked by the Banhammer? That's news to me.

But now who will lead the Nintendo Defence Force?

@EternalNothingness springs to mind as well, I'm not sure how many others have GIFs and a reputation dedicated to them.
I'm guessing you've havn't seen some of his/her more 'interesting' threads. That gif is well deserved.

It helps that he's smithed nearly everyone's Avatars (including mine if I rmemeber correctly)

I find that notable and notorious tend to go hand in hand.

To what end? *gives suspicious look*

OT: I loved Mythrandia, He she it they were crazy! The first time I saw him was in a thread about Ebay banning the sale of magic potions. They were claiming they were a wizard in massively long rambling posts. It was beautiful.

I remember Boudica's period blood period. What a fun thread that was. Alongside such other classics as EN's "Sonic vs Transformers" thread with additional inflatable fetish attached.

As for users, well there's been plenty of memorable ones. j-e-f-f-e-r-s and his Nintendo...dedication being the most recent. I'll almost sad he got banned actually because outside any thread his questioning his beloved Nintendo, he was actually quite knowledgeable and fun to talk to.

Ah yes, my join date is perhaps a bit misleading, as I lurked for almost a year before joining.
So, while I do know about some of the more 'interesting' users in the past 18 months or so, I know of nothing before that. (So I have no idea who some of these other banned people are, mentioned in this thread.)

It's hard to explain exactly. The structure of the rules used to be very different from what it is now. The essential point behind them hasn't changed, but the wording was very different.

You weren't allowed to be rude to people, but I am talking about very obvious trolls. I don't mean "I don't like Half Life" and people accusing them of trolling I am talking about "Everybody who likes Halo is a brain dead moron" kind of threads, the kind that absolutely nobody could doubt was a thread designed to wind people up.

Basically posts where the OP themselves were openly breaking the rules against being nasty.

I remember Mythranda as well as Boudica and EthernalNothingness the most, all of them erm... different to say the least.

Hankman I do remember fondly, every news post you just knew he'd be there on the first page with an awesome pun.

Another one I remember is Katatori-Kun, always involved in political, racist and sexist threads. Always seemingly incredibly polite. Always with a full stack of quotes in long-running arguments, debates or whatever you want to call them. He also got banned although I'm not quite sure why, never really saw him breaking any forum-rules.

This is pretty much what I post in most of these threads.
There was the PRIATE fallout too. That made the forums entertaining for a while.

These threads always make me feel like I've been here too long.
I always wonder if the users who've left ever look at these threads and think, 'holy fuck, they're still talking about that?'
Maybe one day I'll have a freak-out of my own and, in years to come, people on The Escapist will talk about what a crazy ***** I was. Probably not though.

Also, I don't really remember the Mythrandia thing, I think that might have went completely over my head.

I think it was his tendancy to insult the intelligence of people who disagreed with him that resulted in mod wrath. The post he was banned for was during the a debate about the Adria Richards dongle incident earlier this year, in which he essentially said anyone who disagreed with him (he thought that the joking guys were 100% in the wrong) didn't have the intellectual capacity to have ever worked a job more professional than a fast food burger flipper. At least, that's what I think happened, it was a while ago.
