I always liked that Peter Parker became Spider-Man by accident not because it was meant to be or whatever.

I agree, mabye its because of some inferiority complex deep down but I for some reason I don't like it when people are "born" that way
I don't mind the occasional "it's your destiny" plot device, but the charm of Spider-Man was that he was - to my knowledge - the first real every man superhero. He wasn't some alien man from another planet, or a rich playboy, he was just a kid who through a random event found himself in the possession of superpowers. That's what makes it so easy to project yourself onto him.

Tobey Maguire is one of the best actors of the last ten years, so I'd have to say him, but I havn't seen the new film and I don't remember ever seeing Garfield in anything so he may surprise me.

But I really don't think this can live up to the older spiderman films (well maybe the third one)

Not that I wanted the Raimi movies to continue, because it was fairly obvious that by the third movie everyone involved was kinda done with it.
I think they were actually trying to lead into a fourth film but that plan was cancelled after the bad reception of 3
there is no 4th spider man because sam ramie wanted a certain main villain and the studio big wigs wanted a different one (i think the lizard). so through frustration sam left and did ''drag me to hell''.....im pretty sure thats the right timeline.
Yeah I think your right, but I imagine the bad critical reception of 3 led to the big wigs losing faith in Raimi, and not letting him do as he wished.

I think the Vulture was supposed to be in it aswell as the Lizard

I am not at all divided on this. From the first movie I despised Maguire as Peter Parker. He didn't feel right at all to me, he was just a total doormat. We also kept getting told how smart he was, but it never felt that way to me either. Most of all, there was none of the saracastic edge to the character which is one of his hallmark traits. And then there was his "dark side" in spider man 3... "I'm so dark and emo yet simultaneously creepy and hitting on girls, like, OMG."

Garfield nailed the role in my opinion. He actually acts convincingly as a teenager, for one thing. He can give the appearance of being smart, and he seemed genuinely ecstatic to discover what he could do with his powers. He was also pretty damn funny when he entered Spidermans sarcasm mode. I also think his interactions with Gwen were awesome. The scene where he asks her out may be the new textbook definition of adorkable. The other thing I really liked is how they had spiderman fight. The fights seemed a lot more frantic, which to me suits his style better. Spiderman fights by instinct, he doesn't know martial arts or anything like that, he dodges around, finds handy things in his environment, and uses them. Or finds clever uses for his webbing. I think that was better reflected in the new film than the old one.

As for the variations from the classic story: They left out pretty much any reference to the Daily Bugle, Jameson, and they skipped the wrestling thing almost entirely.[footnote]I guess Bonesaw wasn't ready this time.[/footnote] I think those were good changes in deference to the modern setting. Newspapers aren't nearly as important a medium anymore, and playing that down just makes sense. Also, while Jameson was the highlight of the old movies, throwing him into this film would have been too much.[footnote]And honestly, we're never going to see anyone else do J. Jonah Jameson as well as in the Raimi films. That particular performance was stellar.[/footnote] Skipping the wrestling thing makes sense as well because honestly, does amateur masked wrestling still exist? Not so much.

I just got back from seeing it.
IT WAS AWESOME.
Seriously Garfield was a much more believable teenager, and he was actually really funny as Spider-Man. Tobey was too serious, Andrew wins out.

Also, good soundtrack is good.

The part when he was limping on the roof and all the cranes lined up to him...

I haven't seen the new movie yet, but personally I always felt that Toby McGuire was terribly miscast. Not that he's a bad actor or anything, he just doesn't look the part. ...to me anyway. Andrew Garfield looks much more like he'd fit the part than Toby McGuire, going by the trailers I've seen.

That, and the fact that the Lizard looks far too much like one of the Goombas from the Super Mario movie, is putting me off a little. The Lizard is probably one of my favourite Spiderman villains, but Goomba-Lizard just looks off.
And that is what put me off.

That is how Lizard should look I really, really don't like the look of the Lizard in this movie.

Similar to how Venom wasn't very good in Spiderman 3 and Venom is my all time favourite character.
Actually in his first appearance this is what the Lizard looked like:

I don't get it why they restarted the series so soon. Mcguire should have done a couple of more films.
Sony has the film rights to Spiderman, and they lose them if they don't do something with the license within a certain amount of time. Or something like that.

So we're gonna see constant re imaginings of Spiderman until he stops making money.

OT: I thoroughly enjoyed the new movie, and thought Garfield did great at giving us a Spiderman unique from the Mcguire version. I'm not sure which character I like more, but I'm definitely still a bigger fan of the Raimi movies.

not seen it yet (if ever) does he have trouble getting the webs to connect to something solid, in the comics i think he uses his spidersense to aim his webs

When you said "great spider-man debate", I thought you meant organic vs. synthetic webslingers. Somehow this doesn't seem as argument-inducing (at least if Movie-Bob is to be believed).

Mcguire. I'm sorry, Spider-Man should not have an Edward Cullen haircut. Also, Toby plays a great nerdy character, and Peter Parker is nothing if not a nerd. Considering how silly the lines could get in the three Spider-Man movies he starred in, he did quite well.

Garfield. Amazing Spiderman is set in his teen years. He's going through a pretty big phase. His uncle just died and he just got superpowers. Alot of people complain that Peter is a slacker teenager and not a nerd, but I remember being considered a nerd in highschool and not paying attention in class more often.

Remember: He JUST got his powers so his acrobatic skills aren't fine tuned yet. In the first spidey movie, time jumps 2-3 years after gaining his powers so it gave him time to sharpen them.

i hate toby macguire with a pasion, i liked the first two spiderman films and dispised the 3rd but the reason i liked the first two was because of the enemys, toby macguire was NEVER a good peter parker OR a good spider man, he didnt capture either role well at all. Saw the film last night and it was fantastic, andrew garfield was amazing as peter parker and spider-man and although the lizard didnt look too much like the lizard, he was handeled brilliantly. Cant wait for the next one.

All the actors and Raimi were done with the series BEFORE the third one, they did it to kill off any posibilities of a sequel. Raimi didn't want to add Venom but was told to add him because he had more Marquee value since the Sandman was more a B-lister.
Supposedly he had to add that villain and the EMO (because Emo was totally in) (It wasn't, it was just producers thinking it was in)

Franco was fed up with the character he was playing.
Kristen Dunst felt that "like in the third movie Spiderman should totally die".
And Maguire was tired of Spiderman...

All of these you can actually look up.

Actually with the overly emotional triple ending (Spiderman saying goodbye to Harry) (Spidey forgiving Sandman) (Tobey and Kristen) there was enough closure for the whole saga.

As for my favorite Spiderman I have to say Maguire, Garfield just means that Spiderman won't be joining the Avengers anytime soon since >>>> (refer to MovieBob for a good reference as to why) (Not his review of the movie rather the problem about licensing issues in the Big Picture).

Having just seen it, I'd say Andrew Garfield was far better as Spider-Man.
Was also a very good movie over all in my opinion. Can't wait for the sequel.

Also, to everyone saying it was dark and gritty, Garfield's portrayal of Spidey was anything but.
He was hilarious, and pulled it off really well.
