HL2 was good, and the episodes were good as well, but now I want to see Adrian Shephard return. I'd love to see him take on the Combine in his own way - the U.S. Marines way. Race X didn't stand a chance against him in Opposing Force, and the Combine sure as hell won't either. If they keep getting thwarted by a bespectacled man in a scientific power-suit, imagine how badly they'd fare against a hardened military corporal.
This!

Shephard and his wrench. I loved Opposing Force, and would pay good money for a HL2 Episode where he gets released by the G-Man again. Perhaps end the story of Freeman with him rebelling against the G-Mans influence and have the G-Man have to "reactivate" Shephard to "fix" him.
A good idea in terms of plotline, and one I've seen touted a lot, but I'm not sure if I'm okay with the idea of Freeman and Shephard going up against each other. :p

Aesthetically speaking, I want to see Shephard in his old US Military outfit like he wore in Opposing Force, including the PCV and gas-mask. It just wouldn't feel right, otherwise.
Also, a stockpile of weapons from the Black Mesa days, like the Hive Hand, the Snarks, the experimental weapons, the heavy machine gun, even the old trusty MP5 he used back then. It just feels ... "meatier" when using those against Combine rather than the piffy weapons Freeman had to use in HL2. The MP7 sub-machine gun didn't feel meaty enough, and the pistol felt like a pellet gun. Give Shephard his Desert Eagle back!

I'd love to see a Metrocop get eaten alive by Snarks.

Half-Life 2 is my favorite FPS ever created.
IMO If you didn't play it in 2004 when it came out you might not really see how much we all shit our pants at it when it released. It was just really great. A straight up 1984 style sci-fi with Gordan Freeman. The physics blew my face off, And the VARIETY was amazing! You fight in the sewers, in a sci-fi complex, you fight through a zombie horror movie, you fight in a revolution of the people. You fight in a jail commanding legions of insects... the list goes on. This is a game that did no one thing twice, and I love it for it.

I've played them both and they seem to straight forward with inane, unimaginative, time consuming obstacles...

While the game was great for it's time, so was pong! This thread is filled with so much nostalgia, it's hard to breath. The level design and silent protagonist were spot on while everything else just felt like a minor upgrade to DOOM...

I enjoy shooters, but I enjoy story more. This is a land of atmosphere and and bad characters...

I just replayed HL2 a month ago for the fourth time and I still found it to be really fun. I thought the characters and the atmosphere were incredibly well done. What FPS would you say surpasses HL2 in that respect?

I think people are judging the games by todays standards and obviously things have moved on. At there time the games were revolutioary, visually they looked great and HL2 had a physics engine while HL1 included smart AI.

Even by todays standards they still hold up quite well, the graphics have aged reasonably well were HL2 and the episodes is cocnered.

I think HL1 is the greatest selling game of all time not including MMO's something like 30 million copies across all platforms or something, not sure.

For characters? No FPS has held my attention in this genre, hold for F.E.A.R. for its relationship of your bother and Alma

Atmosphere? Metroid prime 2: Echoes. This game went all out, much better then any other game in this aspect. Mostly towards the beginning of Torvus Bog chapter

While these are a "wee" more recent then the original half life, it doesn't change the fact of which ones better in my eyes...

Well, I can't deny the atmosphere in the prime series...

The Half Life series are so overrated it's not funny.
It could be, the shittest storyline and gameplay i've ever seen.
It's a generic piece of shit that isn't worth anyone's time.
The only reason people play it is because other gamers too and they want to be part of the "cool crowd"
For anyone who hasn't played it:
It's a linear pos with shit AI and shit acting/storytelling.
It's the worst series i've ever played.

...the protagonist is a mute (which does make it harder to empathise with him)
I always felt the same way. Some of my friends told me that this was supposed to make it easier for me to project myself onto him, but its not like I really had any control over his long term decisions. Gordon is a tool, not in any insulting sense, but really. The G man uses him for whatever it is the G man does, the resistance uses him to smash stuff, and if the combine asked politely and provided a linear map, they could probably get Gordon to kill the resistance. He never seems motivated by anything but a desire to move forward. On the other hand, I really did enjoy Half Life, and Gordon's silence made me identify more with NPCs for some strange reason.

I love them. Their stories are *very* good, very well thought out and deep (even though some folks don't seem to understand them well enough - I suspect those same folks didn't "get" the ending to the Matrix trilogy either); characters whose depth we're still just scratching the surface on, but clearly have pasts and needs, desires and a future. I can't even begin to say how amazed I am with the post above mine, thinking that the acting is bad, it's certainly some of the best voice acting and character design in the gaming world.

Now, I come at this game series not as a console gamer or hardcore of any kind. My last experience with an FPS was the original Doom. Not the newer ones, the *original* which probably predates some of the posters here... So I had absoultely no experience with the style of play. I was intrigued by Portal, bought it and played it and completely loved it. I went online looking for some fan art and such, and came across "Concerned" and "Freeman's Mind" and from there it was a quick trip back to the store for the Orange Box (since I'd only purchased Portal before) - yes, that's right I paid for Portal twice, and I still feel like I haven't paid enough for the products I've played.

Loved Half Life 2, played the episodes directly after and enjoyed every moment of them (except the driving in episode 2 because I ABSOLUTELY SUCK at driving in this game); then I bought the original Anthology so I went back in time to play HL1, Blue Shift and OP4. Though the scary sock-puppet faces were a bit off-putting, I loved those too.

Got Gmod. Download plenty of mods for the HL2 and HL1 games.

I think that the Half Life franchise has done so much for the gaming world, I don't even know how to express it. I love them.

I actually play it on the PS3 version of the orange box, and HL1 on the PC.
Oddly enough, none of the supposed flaws in the PS3 version actually bother me.
Im just used to loading times it seems.

Is there an even better option we can mark? I know that they're probably saving up all their money for a doomsday device, but their games kick ass.

6 years after release there is still no other game that come even close to Half life 2, it's in a league of it's own.

It's like the Dark side of the moon or Godfather 1 and 2 of gaming.

And it's funny, back then the first half life released I wasn't a big fan of it. I thought Unreal was a much better game. Maybe you just need to be mature enough to see how great it is.
