The iPad is not good for anything. Ever.
This.

It's an expensive smartphone with all of the size of a laptop and none of the potential power or utility.
I disagree. I can replace 2000 dollars worth of hardware with an iPad and a 15 dollar app? Not only has it already saved me over 1000 dollars, but I can turn around use the app and iPad to make money back on investment.

OT:The iPad is already drowning in shovelware, and it's going to get worse.
Why were you using a $2,000 computer to play Farmville?
Trolling can and will get you moderated on these forums. Heads up.

OT: I don't want n iPad but I see no reason why it shouldn't be good for games. It's a new platform with a reasonably new mechanic. Let developers go wild. Games don't have to be triple A HD games to be good. In fact, most don't. www.tigsource.com has some of the best, most innovative games on the internet. Real innovation happens when developers don't have all the money in the world.

Worrying about graphics and HD gaming is a crutch.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for when I decide to troll. Note that having a different opinion than you is not trolling.

You said you can replace a $2,000 computer with an iPad for gaming. You can't. I honestly can't believe you think knowing the facts is trolling.

Edit: Actually I think you just trolled me. Well played.

It's a new and popular platform. That can only be good for gaming. Compared to Consoles the barriers to entry for developers are lower and so more start up companies can make interesting games without mountains of financial backing.
wait how is the barrier lower if the IPad like most apple products is so expensive :\?
I was referring to developers. It costs next to nothing to make an iOS app. Compared to the unbelievable expense and rigmarole required to get a PS3 or XBox Dev Kit. Then you've got distribution costs. While services like XBLA are helping small developers get on home consoles it is still hard to do.

I did not, though you obviously had originally thought I was someone else. Fact is, someone said he replaced his gear with an iPad with positive results. You presume that means he's playing farmville.

I'm not sure how that could be anything other than trolling. You knew full well he wasn't talking about farmville.

And everything else I said about gaming I also meant 110%.

Who knows. Best case, developers interested in making shovelware will head over to the iPad instead of pushing crap out on the other consoles(especially the Wii), which is actually listed under the definition of the word. Then we can make fun memes like Yo dawg, we put shovelware in your shovelware so you can waste money while you waste money.

Realistically, there will be a few good games over there, and most will get ports or "clones" in a sense, like Fortresscraft/Minecraft. A few will be lost to obscurity, but it's not really anywhere near the end of the world.

Last thing we need is a 4th system, especcially one from Apple, which is known for the zealot fans. Sony vs Microsoft is bad enough as it is.
As for the iPad, it might be fun if you have one anyways, but it is no way a hardcore contender as a console. Just get a PsP or a Gameboy if you want portable gaming.

I've never had anyone be able to explain to me what an ipad can do that a laptop can't. The ipad 2 seems like a very expensive way to buy something as equally useless.

the ipad and casual games in general are good for the gaming industry because it gets people playing and in time they may even move on to better games, besides its also good for the indie game industry

People buy a mac because it's from Apple.

They make their things look pretty, but in terms of functionality they're nothing special.
In fact, they're less functional AND accessible than PCs.
