Don't confuse the way people act online in video games as kindness. There are bad people that are lovely online and lovely people that are bad online.
Kindness might be the wrong word for it, I was mostly going for "positive experience from strangers". How they "really" are outside the game is besides the point.

Well, once a guy which I didn't know before gave me a weapon in Team Fortress 2 (a hammer for Pyro) just because I asked him. That was very nice. :)

I have been "meh" for the multiplayer interactions. I normally don't use the mic much unless the team I am on is vocal (as in calling out positions, flag caps etc) so I imagine it could be worse in most of the shooters I play if I actually listened in

Mostly positive, since I don't play online much these days and have used voice chat maybe four times in my entire life. It's always nice to find a player who's willing to coordinate and think more strategically than just smell their own farts all day. Mostly this has happened in co-op games like Diablo and Borderlands.

But I have to wonder if 85% of the world's population is clinically retarded judging by how often I've ended up on teams with 6 snipers and maybe 1 or 2 players trying to actually do something on TF2.

I remember the Counter Strike days, back when camping was so rare you had to applaud the guy that sniped you from afar for getting away with it.
