The first trailer had, IIRC, something along the lines of "They claim to be fighting for freedom, but for who?"
Not exactly a super flag-shitting eagle type sentiment.
Given that it's about a war based on democratic ideals I'm guessing that the colonists will probably come off in a better light than the British, but that doesn't mean they'll necessarily be great. The main character is not Joe Smith McEagledick, he's a Native American who likely has reasons to dislike the colonists as much as the British.
Also, the entire series is based on beating the shit out of Templars, who are portrayed as absolutely and unconditionally evil. This was a real group. So was the group the assassins in the first game were based on.
It's more recent history, sure, but it's not like simplifying history to make it more one-sided is at all new to the series.
