Can I just enjoy it? I think a lot of problems stem from gamers' black & white "MUST LOVE, MUST HATE, YOU ARE WITH US OR AGAINST US" attitude.

I tried playing the first game on a recommendation from a magazine I bought, and I just didn't understand it. Then again, I was like 4 and had really only played platformers and beat-em-ups until then. Because of that, I tried to ignore the series for a long time.

But eventually, I realized I should try to give one of them a whack and started playing Link to the Past. So far, I've played that, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks (so far my favorite). ...and have yet to complete any of them (though I've gotten REALLY close with Phantom Hourglass).

I think what I like about the series is being able to explore the landscape, a concept I've only recently really warmed up to. Solving the puzzles is also kind of rewarding by allowing me to figure out how I should be using my items. Having those touches of humor in the game makes it a bit more enjoyable, which is probably why I gravitate more toward Wind Waker than Twilight Princess. (Also, I'd rather be rescuing Zelda than Peach any day, because at least Zelda shows capability in defending herself sometimes, as well as some amount of intelligence.)

What's annoying, though? Well, I got really ticked off at the stealth sections of the Wind Waker-style games, particularly the first time at the Forsaken Fortress (the timing has to be really tight on that one). Combat doesn't always allow me to beat the enemy how I should be able to, either (although, it's pretty straightforward in Link to the Past).

edit: just thought of it but if they don't have more items, then have sweet combinations with the use of the items you have, say you use the hookshot to grapple to something, you can also use your sword at the same time to stab it into the wall/dirt/stone/wood of where you are at and so you can grapple to another spot next (this could be great for secret area hidings towards the ceilings) or you could use the shield as a sled kind of thing when racing down slopes and use your hookshot to grab corners/edges to turn and stuff.
This is a really good idea. Really, if they just implemented all of their items well (I'm looking at you, Level 2 Power Bracelet and Spinner) it would be great.

Zelda is for kids. People shouldn't be enjoying Zelda past about age 15. I was watching my sister play Twilight Princess recently, and I can find things that STILL HAVE NOT CHANGED SINCE 19 FUCKING 98. Or 1980 whatever the fuck it was when the NES version came out. It doesn't change. Kids don't like change. It's marketed to a young audience...I outgrew it long ago and now despise it for not growing up with me.
Lol, I've got an image of a grimdark version of Zelda. The formula's fine, man. It's a good formula. The games are fun when you're a kid, and fun to reminisce over and occasionally re-play when you grow up. They really aren't trying to be anything else.
So you agree with me then? They are for kids.
In the sense you won't pick up on the more hidden themes as a child, yea.

If I had to pick one or two things about the series as a whole, one would be the puzzles, were, upon completeing a rather difficult one, I could go "Look at what I did, I didn't have to consult gamefaqs!" Another would be the characters. From my perspective (which I will not deny to possibly being wrong) each character was fleshed out in some why, even the unimportant mini-game characters, whose mini-game you played only once to get the bigger quiver, or bomb bag or Piece of Heart, or whatever. Each character felt like they belonged in the experience, and weren't just some mindless NPC put in at the last minute (yeah, some of the early zelda games's NPC's were copy paste from previous ones (OoC and Majoras Mask for example) but I'm willing to cut them a little slack. After all, those games were made back when gameing was just starting to become popular). I think my two favorite characters from the series were Illia(Twilight Princess) and Saria (OoC). Not just because of their connection to Link, each was important in an unspacific way. Saria was the Elder of one of the temples you had to go to, Illia helps you find a way to your next temple. Also, Illia's breast are reasonably sized, but I can't say that about Saria, and anyone who has played Ocarina of Time (even a little bit of it) will know full well why.

Oh.... I talked a little to long... didn't I? Darn it, I always do that!

So am I, but... wow. That avatar you made puts mine to massive shame... you know what? I'm going to go make a better one!
You know, if you'd like. I could draw you a better version of the one you have.
Nah, its cool. To be honest, I think it would mean more for me to do it myself. No offense to you, of course, your apparently a very capable artist, no one can deny that. Lets just say it would probably mean a lot more to me, if I showed off my love of the game with my own skills.

Oh, and to anyone who say that Zelda is for kids:

I'm 19, going on 20, and if loving Legend of Zelda at this age is stupid, then by all means, call me Retard McSpackyPants. That's all I'm going to say on that subject.

I must admit I'm a bit of a purist about link being a righty in the recent games too. Being a lefty as well helped me pretend that I was Link as a kid. I understand and accept why Nintendo changed it because of the Wiimote, but it's still a little disappointing.

I don't appreciate being insulted solely for liking something.
look if you don't like the games, that's fine but saying that is for manchildren is just being offensive to anyone who does like the games

I like the zelda games because for me not only are they pure fun but I'm one of those people who like trying to piece together timeline, I really like the world of Hyrule and I enjoy seeing it from many different eras seeing how it has changed the music is always classic and always fits and overall for me they are allways just great expediences

It's everything I love about gaming rolled into one. You get solid stories and memorable characters, you get numerous puzzles that can flex the brain, but are rarely so challenging that I feel like breaking something in frustration. And once OoT rolled around, they even began to have competent action, which has only gotten better with each iteration. There's also some great music to be had, too.

Was on the borderline between love it and like it, like it seems a bit too little, and love it I probably don't deserve to say.

I've owned a Zelda game on, GBC, GBA, GC and Wii so 4 systems, the Wind Waker or whatever was really bad, hated that, the one where he becomes a wolf was great but I got stuck somewhere (and its on a Wii, so, yeah), the GBC and GBA games were 'ok' a bit retro in the 21st century though.

The best Zelda game ever though, would still be Ocarina of Time, I wish I had a copy, but with the 3DS, and if I bother to buy one with Zelda (a package deal would be nice), despite the stupid 3D gimic, it could be great! Re-worked graphics, new dungeons, streamlined story, could be a great tribute to the original.

Then there's Majoras Mask... hmm... didn't play it enough to form an opinion.

So yeah, I guess I'm closer to 'Love it' than 'Like it'.

I regard the Zelda games with complete and utter indifference.

Same as all the other Nintendo series.

Overall i hate it.

I never grew up playing it, and always seen it as an action/adventure game with little RPG mechanics. When other kids were playing Zelda i was playing more RPG-heavy games. The game is a great introduction on how the game on how a good video game is made but other than that its consistently the samey.

Now because it suffers/beaten to be samey like CoD, it doesnt have that clutch of the MP aspect so like VikingSteve said; kids and manchildren are gleefully eating this series up.

Most of my friends have fond memories/is manchildren and seeing them eat this up sickens me and the fanbase is probably along this line. Then again most of Nintendo IPs are are attributed with this.

TL;DR Zelda has to age with its generations and inspire new generations. Nintendo has the potential do this. Letting it be samey is the same situation as Call of Duty, because of the lack of any uproar towards this i dislike the series.

The music in the games is amazing. The games look and play really nicely. Oh, I also like the exploration and puzzles.

Also, before anyone uses it, the "stale formula" argument is totally invalid. EVERY major game series has always had that one game that sold the most and caused the company to attempt to make every game after it the same in order to keep selling units. Bethesda does this with the Elder Scrolls series(Every game after Morrowind stuck with the same basic design. Heck, it even found its way into the Fallout series), Blizzard's franchises also copy the formulas of their predecessors(if they make another WarCraft game, chances are it's following the WoW template), and don't even get me started on Halo, CoD, and every other stale FPS that's been copying the same template. It just can't really be avoided.

They're for anyone who enjoys them, IMO. I liked them as a kid, and (while I mostly play more complicated games) still look back on them fondly and like them now.

I like the Legend Of Zelda. It's always filled with fun memories and good times. The biggest complaint is that people say it's the same game. The basic formula is pretty much the bones of the body. Each games has its own muscles, flesh and the rest to themselves.
