Apologies Notlad. My twitch sensitive bot detection caused me to report you there. Tricky thing that, you -think- you know how bots generate text, and how people type when they're trying to sell you something.

Still not sold (hah) on my assertion to the second, but still, benefit of the doubt and all. Though, I consider it just good practice to suspect an OP that reads like they were writing a Wikipedia entry or blurb.

All the same, yes, looking forward to the Hobbit. The makeup looks damn fantastic, especially the Dwarves. Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug? I've not had much exposure to the man personally, though I've heard he's good in that Sherlock Holmes show. Don't really know what to expect of the man.

And I was surprised it's been that long. :O

10 years old? Wow. Like a few others have said, im 19 and this has made me feel pretty old.
It didnt come out til the 19th in the UK though, i remember going after school to see it, ah those were the days.

I must've watched the films at least 3-4 times each year every year for the past 10 years, from that you can probably guess they're 3 of my favourite films ever. Two Towers is the best though :D

Quite simply the best movies I've ever seen. Anything else tends to get soured by the bitching and moaning by people who didn't enjoy it as much, but I just tune out whenever someone says the movies were murder on their short attention span. The LOTR trilogy was one of those movies that you never forget.

I'd say it makes me feel old seeing this, but I felt old two years ago when I went to New Zealand and saw so many tourist traps that tried to give LOTR the Star Wars treatment, with crappy merchandise and 'Lord of the Rings' tours advertised in every second window.

They cut out Tom Bombadil. Best chapter in the whole set of books and they cut it out. I could never forgive them for it. I saw all the movies, but I could never get fully behind them.

Best movie trilogy I've ever seen.

Me and my friends quote those films all the time and have developed so many inside jokes. It has almost become a ritual to say "Crumbs on his jacketsess!" whenever someone drops food on themself.

Absolute piece of art. Amazing films that have really peaked the fantasy genre as a whole. It makes me feel old that they are a decade old... I remember going to watch them in the cinema, and everyone being O-faced at the size of the battles.

Can't wait for the hobbit!

Some of the best movies I've ever seen (read: favorite movies of all time). Lots of fans complain about the movies deriving from the books too much, but compared to other book to movie adaptations (im looking at you, eragon), its an absolute masterpiece. It's also the only film series to successfully pull of a directors extended cut.

Aww man. Ten years? Now I'm gonna get all nostalgic. Only one cure: watch the movies again!

Can't wait for the hobbit. Totally gonna be a opening night viewing. I don't care about work or school. I've been waiting for this for seven years

They're amazing. No, they weren't completely faithful to the books. But Jackson did a damn fine job with it. Those movies really are amazing.

Plus, they spawned DM of the Rings [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=612], so yeah.

And ten years on, they enjoy a nigh-hallowed place in my (and many others') memories and affections.

In a way, they are very much like star wars - in that they popularized a new genre on the big screen. Aside from swords-and-sandals historical epics (and the odd niche film), Lord of the Rings was pretty much ground zero for cinema fantasy. All that came after - from Harry Potter and Narnia to Game of Thrones and the various other novel adaptations hinted at/cancelled/whathaveyou (hello, Dark Tower!) - started in 2001. And personally, I am very glad for their influence. (They really need to stop the incremental re-re-releases, though - that is one place where they should definitely not have followed George Lucas' example. I reserve judgement on the "split the Hobbit" decision.)

Has it been that long already? These films opened me up into the fantasy genre, which I had ignored before. They are my all time favorites, both book and movie. Can't wait for The Hobbit.

Oh damn... there are so many young people feeling old over this, I think it broke my hip.

OT: loved 'em. Not quite bringing the books to life, but as close as I've ever seen.

I still feel it is the greatest film trilogy of all time. Jackson did a near perfect job of bringing a series of books to the silver screen even though the series was deemed "Unfilmable".
