"Does zinc affect the symptoms of the common cold?" Only high quality studies were included wherein people were given zinc or a placebo, but neither they nor the scientists knew which until afterwards. The results of all the studies were combined, so, without doing any new experiments, we can aim for the best possible knowledge about whether something works or not. In this case, the results for just under a thousand otherwise healthy patients were used.

Would you take zinc to improve recovery from the Common Cold?

zinc mitigates symptoms. it does not aid actual recovery. that said, yes, i sometimes take it to make symptoms more bearable.

This just in: magic replaces science! High quality fun studies have shown an arbitrary increase in the incidents of magic vs medical cures for a range of diseases! Stemming from pioneering studies in African tribes of unprotected sex with virgins as a cure for HIV, the quest for fun alternative medicines has now turned to ingesting elemental powders! After poor initial trials with arsenic, copper, lead, tin, aluminium, iron, potassium, sodium, caesium, phosphorus and magnesium, zinc has been found to actually alleviate symptoms rather than have no effect, worsen the condition of, or simply kill the subject! Magical!

Zinc is in a lot of food people would eat daily, including breakfast and dairy products. And they do say you're supposed to feed a cold...

I remembered that I had to respond to this...

This is actually a fairly high-quality meta-study, compiled by a reputable organisation (the Cochrane Collaboration), using only the scientific studies that conformed to proper scientific method (double-blind testing, randomised use of the treatment to eliminate bias, et cetera). It's not just some nonsense study done to sell products.
Ok, so you say. Fine, though there wasn't much of that in the link you posted (of if there was I decided it was more fun to hang on the "magic" angle being thrown around :p)

Maybe it's ahead of magnetic treatments (lol) in effect, but tbh I'm happy letting my body deal with it.

I actually saw this on BBC news in the morning when I felt that I was getting the symptoms of a cold, so I took zinc tablets every day, and the cold was over and done with very quickly.

Wrong...winge and cry about it ad nauseum and lie in bed all day while you get your girlfriend/wife or mom to make you cups of tea/coffee/lemon and honey and soup etc. You get waited on hand and foot while she gets to roll eyes and feel all superior. Everybody wins.
Exactly this.

Get a working immune system? With all the medication people are downing today I fear that we are artificially weakening the human immune system. I was sick a lot as a kid, that built my immune system to the point that in the six or so years I haven't had more than a day or two of seasonal sinus congestion. I am not a germaphobe, several summers working at summer camps will prevent that and I can be around with people who are sick, get coughed on and easily have the virus get in my system but never affects me. Why? Because I got sick, got better, and mostly without the use of modern medicine. Relying on medicine, especially symptom reducers that don't actually combat the virus, will invariably reduce the body's ability to fight of viruses on its own.

Or at least my views on the matter without actually looking any of this up research-wise.

You would think that, but if someone expected me to wait on them hand and foot because of a little cold, I'd tell them to man the fuck up. If it was the Flu on the other hand... Now that shit is serious.

I rarely get sick (because I have the immune system of a champion! *flex*), and if I do - I don't take anything that's considered 'medicine', even over-the-counter stuff.

I just take my daily vitamin capsule, put a slice of lemon in my morning tea, and carry on.
CARRY ON, I SAY!
