I don't know what you mean by badass, but I reckon how Legolas was able to slaughter so many at great range without wavering and pull off the biggest stunts in the films, and then 'not' say some cheesy one liner after made him look like the badass.

Otherwise if it's just about who's the strongest, then it's Gandalf.

If we're talking who would win in a fight - Gandalf

If we're talking who is the best of both character and personal strength? Samwise.

I mean, if we put all of the Fellowship on an equal playing field (everyone is the same strength, race, etc) then Sam would wipe the floor with everyone.

Why?

Fuck you, that's why.

Gandalf is a stone-cold OG who does not give a fuck. Get imprisoned at the top of a giant tower?

He just jumps off.

Fighting an age-old being made out of fire?

************ takes him to hell.

The Wilhelm clan is bothered by Nazgul?

Takes them out with a flashlight.

And he still has time to light some grass and chill with his hobbit brothers like Carl Sagan.

Then, then he time travels into the future and gains the power of magnetism.

He's like the Brian Blessed of Ian McKellens.
This. Also holds his own in a duel against the master of his order in his own tower, later defeats said master twice in contests of will, earns the respect of magic horse kings, slaps down three other members of the Fellowship simultaneously like it ain't no thang, gives death the finger, shakes houses by getting slightly upset, and is actually pretty handy with a sword.

I'm surprised that one person voted for Pippin. Was it a joke?
Hmm I voted for Legolas, purely because he always looks like a superstar killing orcs.
But I agree with the majority: Gandalf is the best option.

Hey, the dude saved Faramir.

OT: I voted for Aragorn. He falls off a cliff and decides to come back by slammin' open those double doors just to have a cool entrance.

Radical.

Most fellowshippers (not what you think) are badass in their own special way.

In terms of bravado, Gimli.
In terms of rewl of kewl, Legolas.
In terms of sheer power, Gandalf.
In terms of overachieving, Samwise.
In terms of good old heroism, Aragorn.
In terms of going out like a boss, Boromir.

Didn't he also grab Merry and make out with him on set?

I don't understand how this is even a question. Gandalf's a Maiar; he could wipe the floor with the rest of them put together. Also, Sam didn't disprove that "one does not simply walk into Mordor"; he PROVED it. One enters Mordor through sneaking, stealth, and trickery; taking the back way and only surviving the trek because you thought to recruit a (functional) native who knows the terrain.
And yet, he walked into the place. It didn't take an army, or massive magical powers. It took a little bit of luck, some cunning, and putting one foot in front of the other.

OT: Samwise is the most badass, given where he started, to where he ended. A simpleton gardner, clueless about what was going on, only going because his beloved friend would be in danger. He ends up saving the world, and his friend from certain doom.

He did indeed walk, in the sense that entered on foot and wasn't running or skipping; and he didn't have an army at his back. But we both know that that's not what "One does not simply walk into Mordor" means. His entrance was anything but casual, a product of enormous effort and guile. He did not "walk" into Mordor, he "snuck" into Mordor- and since the phial contained light from one of the Silmarils, it'd be more accurate to say they used an item of massive magical power to destroy a hunk of gold that didn't have any.

Samwise made progress; he helped save the world. He certainly leveled up the most and had the most impressive improvement- but that's not what "badass" means.

Gandalf is in the lead? I don't think of him as badass. Powerful, but not really a fighter's mentality even. He's more peaceful and wise. Even funny at times.

Are we voting for badassery or just favorite character then? Because then I'd agree. But not badass.

Frodo chose to take the ring when every one else wouldnt. Also suffers for it and walks into enemy territory. Its Frodo and Gamwise mostly because they have no fighting skills to speak off yet face a lot of evil. Also he did fight a giant spider so thats pretty awesome.

Plus Frodo saved the whole middle earth. He maybe a twat but he is a brave twat that saved everyone.

Aragorn solely because this has to be the most epic opening of a door to ever occur on planet Earth.

Screw it. I'm not voting if Frodo can't be on the list. Frankly, any afforementioned twattiness can be handwaved as being directly caused and/or influenced by the Ring. Between the permanently debilitating wound he received and psychological torment he had to go through, I'd argue he walked away from the mission worse off than any other member of the Fellowship. Yes, including Boromir.

That being said, I still wouldn't vote for him. I can't decide between Aragorn and Sam; in the end they both kick ass and get the girl.

In all seriousness though. Boromir is probably one of the most heroic characters in the LOTR franchise. He is much braver than Aragorn, who choose to hide from his haunting lineage.

Really, the Captain of Gondor was the only man alive that faced Sauron's army head on, and won (Osgiliath). This was before the formation of any alliances and fellowships. All by himself, leading the Kingdom of Gondor. He is an excellent captain all-around.

Samwise Gamgee.

This is a badass contest, not a who is powerful contest, and that's why i vote for Sam. Who needs any combat training and experience? Who fucking needs a heroic lineage and "good" genes? Who needs freaking semi-godhood? Not Samwise Gamgee, that's for certain. He was the one guy who made the complete trek from the Shire to Mt. Doom with the ringbearer, he was there protecting him the entire time.

Why?

Because friendship. He is the ultimate Neutral Good character, who stared down a demi-goddess and won using a flask and a sword in the movies, and two swords in the books, and after that invaded an orc civil war to save his friend, and the world. He was the one who actually went there and back again, because after that? Babies, lots of babies and a happy ending. He deserved one.
