Fighting through two demon infested moons, then Hell itself and winning. Fighting through demon infested Earth, saving the entire race, fighting through Hell again and winning again and levelling most of it in process. Fighting off a third demon invasion then staying in Hell to make sure the demons don't try that shit again. One man. The progenitor of badass FPS characters, accept no substitute.

I love Altair so much. He's the Batman of the Middle East in the 1100s.
He's badass because he's just as awesome as the other guys, but with more limited technology in most cases.

Well, everyone (especially the player's squad) in Gears Of War suffers from testosterone poisoning. There's also older characters - Doomguy, Serious Sam, Duke Nukem. They are all honorary badasses of gaming.

But i'm going to say it's Ratchet anyway. Because:

A) he takes on entire galactic armies by himself,
B) his firepower is something you would expect to be mounted on a starship, and
C) he gets bonus points for one characteristic all space marines and war heroes lack - huggability.

Seeing as Duke Nukem is the base upon which all future badasses are either based on (or draw inspiration from) he would have to be the 'Alpha badass'.
