It's gameplay for me, I've always thought people put too much weight on graphics, as long as they don't completely suck, it's fine by me.

I want it to be well-intentioned and loved by its developers. All other things will follow under this. They'll want to make the best story, the best characters, the best graphics and the best gameplay.
This is honestly a stupid opinion of games. Unless you mean that the story, characters, graphics, and gameplay should be evenly created this is a stupid response. What you are basically saying is, if you meant that the aforementioned list of aspects should be cared for in that order, you prefer an interactive movie, not a video game.

largely it's character development/plot/ and how much control I can exert over those aspects as well as shaping the gaming environment.

I can easily overlook some gameplay features as long as there is a good enough of a story to want me to keep going., Like in ME I was unphased by the inventory system, or the mako controls, or even the UCW missions because the story kept me going....

I love games with a good story, something I don't see coming it doesn't have to be anything controversial or relatable just something entertaining.

Atmosphere? Plotline? LIKEABLE CHARACTERS?
Geez people you're playing a game not watching a movie or reading a book
O'rly? In this age kids today spend prolly more time playing video games that reading books or watching movies, might as well come up with good plot/atmosphere/likable characters things.
For your information i read my beloved Forgotten Realms books like a cocaine addict does his drug and often watch movies.
And i am fourteen years old.
I guess i'm an oddball though.

You call that reading? Come back when you know every single crime in Poirot books!

Or you start trowing darts at George R.R. Martin's face cause he still hasnt released the 5th book of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Gameplay most definately, its solid, fluid, balanced.... and most importantly its fun.

Its the reason why i only really play Halo 3, Gears 2, and Bomberman live on my 360.

You missed "fun".
I think it needs to be FUN. While being fun is probably a combination of the different things in the poll, it is still the only factor that keeps me playing.

The Metal Gear Solid series stopped being fun for me after the first one because Kojima started taking plot dumps all over the place by adding these interminably long cut scenes that I was afraid to skip for fear of missing out on what I was doing. I'll take Peggle over MGS any day.

I don't think any aspect is the most important. So I went with Atmosphere. -a games-are-art hippie

Gameplay. Gameplay is such an overwhelming factor to a game's quality that it can override any other element. A game could have horrid sound, graphics that look like fifth grade drawings and a non-existent plot and if it was fun enough to actually play it would sell like hotcakes. (I think there might actually be a few games like that out there).

Games are about actually being fun to play after all. If you want something nice to look at, you go to a museum. If you want a masterful plot, you read a book. If you want awesome music, you pull out an Ipod. If you want to play a fun game, you buy a videogame.

1. Character development
2. Plot
3. Gameplay
4. Atmosphere
5. Graphics

Graphics is the least important, you can still have a good game with bad graphics. But good graphics never hurt, as the previously mentioned good game, then becomes a great game.

Oh, and character development/plot is everything.

OMG another aspects thread, you might as well not put gameplay because that is the heart, soul and brain of a game. All the other stuff are about equal but it's the gameplay that makes a game fun or not.

Just compare the gameplay from Melee to Brawl and you will know exactly what I am talking about!

Probably the only games that don't need good gameplay is porn games because you only want to see the porn. Would you do maths to see someone strip? You probably would!

It's kinda hard for me to decide what is more impotent because of the way i view games...
some games are like a great book and with the right atmosphere it can suck you in pretty badly. On the other hand sometimes i just wanna have fun, you know fast phase games that relay on "instincts" and "reactions" and when you complete them you get the sense of achievement.
so its not really This or That its a mix of both considering what mood i have.
