Poll: The Netherlands.. What do people from other countries think?

We are a small country, but we are still quite important to the rest of the world. I just wondered how other people see us. As a country which has a very strong economy and has been playing a special role in the European economy for many centuries or as a country full of weed smoking idiots ?

Don't care how you reply. You can say whatever you want. Topics may vary from soccer to the current economy.

I picture the Dutch as kind, friendly and polite people. But I would say the same about the Belgish and Swedish: I just never met anyone from there.

I've been to The Netherlands twice, very nice country where people seem very friendly. On one of the trips we went to Amsterdam and you guys know how to milk tourists for money, always trying to draw people into the strip clubs. A guy I work with lived in Amsterdam for a while back in the 80s and he was basically employed to sit in the club all night long drinking, chatting to English tourists to get them to stay and spend more money.

Hell, even far outside of Amsterdam, Etten-Leur I think it was, even the guy running the pub we were in was like "If you guys want some girls I can get you some girls".

I will say, out of the countries I've been to in Europe, Holland in the nicest and if I ever get round to learning the language I wouldn't mind emmigrating over there.

I've been to many countries in Europe and by far the friendliest are the Dutch (it helps they have the best grasp of English and love of the colour orange too)...

I love our liberal ethics, regarding gay marriage and adoption, abortion, euthenasia etc. I also think regulating prostitution and soft-drugs usage is a good idea. Our school system is good (though having trouble due to lack of funding) and our little language is nice and quirky.

What I hate is the people's love of mediocrity. 'The common man' is revered as some sort of half-god, an ideal we all must strive to be. If you're exceptional at something and get rich with that, you must be punished by harsh taxes and are looked down upon by the common man. Well, except if you're a footballer. We have two sayings that best describe this attitude:

'Act normal, that's crazy enough' and 'Don't pop your head out of the cornfield' (or it'll be chopped off).

Having been to Holland, I can tell you that I liked it. The views aren't all the great, what with the utter flatness of the country, but it seems like a really nice place to live.

Oh yes, though I don't know where it stems from (1974 World Cup, I think). The English have a very one-sided rivalry with the Germans, not realising they couldn't care less.

OT: Yeah, I used to view the Netherlands as weed-capital of Europe, like most Brits. However, as I work with a fair few Dutch people, they're decidedly much more chilled out than most other Europeans.

PS Never understood why it's 'Dutch' when that's 'Deutsch' with a different etymological evolution.

Oh god, the rivalry, I practically have nothing with football but when the Germans and the Dutch are up. FUCK YEAH!

Are we really that important these days? Last time I checked we were, overal, a yes-man for the bigger political powers.

Anyway, I must say that I'm starting to dislike it less and less. Sure there's still this undying love for normalcy in this country, and good heavens I can't stand our lame-ass language, it's like the wimpy brother of brutish German, but at least that goes with a healthy amount of liberal ethics. The only time I actually like my mothertongue is when a foreign person tries to speak it. It's like no other nationality on the planet can pronounce our language correctly, especially the G.

I wanted to leave this dump for ages, but I'm slowly coming back on that. I think it was just a grudge against the little hick village I'm from.

However, this country is hell on earth whenever some football championship is going about that has our national team in it. The orange...so. much. ORANGE!!!
