It's nearly the same... but in the sky.

I'm looking forward to it!

Glad they've changed location. I was pretty annoyed that BioShock2 was just more of the same from the last :[.
I hope there isnt too many leap of faiths in there *rolleyes* more autosave/loading for stupid jumping parts.

BioShock: Plasmid and Gene based shooter

SystemShock: Cyber punk sci-fi shooter

why couldnt they drop the Bio for something like:

if there are plasmids I will accept that its feasible but if they have a new power game mechanic (looks like a possible psychic link based theme) why not go for HeadShock or PsycheShock or even SpiritShock?

Erm.... that's not Bioshock, it's just stolen the name.

It does look good though, I just don't think they need to keep the Bioshock name.
Think about it, if they changed the name, some people might think it was ripping Bioshock off, and would then lose some of its appeal.

I really don't think that's an issue, no one is going to think it's a rip-off if it's from the same studio are they? No one moaned that Halo was basically a remake of Marathon and those two have a lot more in common than Bioshock seems to with Infinite.

The people who keep saying its not Bioshock are fail. If anything its MORE Bioshock than Bioshock 2, since that was made by a different studio and strictly isn't canon.
Oh really? I'm pretty sure it's still considered canon. And look at what Bioshock had in common with Bioshock 2; EVERYTHING.
Bioshock with Infinite?
Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative and gameplay experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky.
Entirely new? Well then that doesn't sound like it has much in common at all now does it?

In the same way that the studio that is currently developing Fallout:New Vegas doesn't consider Bethesda's Fallout 3 canon, and vice-versa. Stories in the gaming industry are considered studio-specific unless stated.

Also, read the quote again: i said "strictly". Personally I think Bioshock 2 is in lock-step with Bioshock, but if you want to get technical, it isn't officially canon merely because it was made by another studio.

I made that point in my OP to convey that setting alone isn't a required criteria to make a successor/prequel. Please, if you haven't read the interview from the devs about the direction of Bioshock:Infinite, please do so. It covers the same basic themes: The Gene and society. Control. Perspective. What you see when you look up and whether or not there will be platforming sections doesn't make--or not make--a game true to its predecessor.

The description of that game plus the trailer makes me wonder why I never played Bioshock.

Officially it's because I don't have much money and prefer many other genres over shooters. But this may have to be one of those exceptions.

Here's another nice source:

Ken Levine apparently loves to hear himself talk. Interesting either way.

CRAP! GET THIS THING OUT OF MY FACE! this looks terrible. or atleast, compared to bioshock and bioshock 2. They were amazing, some of my favourite games. But now, no splicers, no big daddys, no little sisters, no plasmids, but worst of all, NO MYSTERY! there is no mytery behind this at all. The story sound rubbish. I am not looking forward to this game at all, but i will buy it, just to show my dedication to bioshock and to give the game a chance. If they do not go back to underwater soon, i will be very disapointed...and upset : (.

[HEADING=2]message to bioshock infinite:[/HEADING]
You have yet to win me over bioshock. stick with what you know...underwater, big hulking guys with drills, morbidly cute little girls with needles, mystery...etc.
I will give you a chance, but, damn it, if you really are crap i will destroy you! Stop upsetting me bioshock! Go back to the deep blue...PLEASE! : (

The title doesn't fit.

Agreed, but relax, it's just a title. It's clearly a stand-alone game we'll found out exactly how it's connected with BioShock sooner or later.

As for themes to explore, this one isn't so hard to think up; the nearing end of American isolationism. You can safely say that having a huge city in the sky threatens that.

That's quick to judge now isn't it?

We have just heard about this game, saw a little teaser trailer and read a teeny tiny bit of info about the actual story. Just wait for more info.

Looks interesting, for what we can see of it so far. Certainly going to be a game I'll (vaguely, as usual) follow.

Well, its in the hands of Irrational Games, so I can expect something decent at the least. In my personal opinion Bioshock 2 should have been done under their watch considering Rapture felt no where near the same when they switched developers. It felt like just another city with a dark and mysterious past.

Hopefully, as more info is revealed, we can hope for the same feeling we got when we first stumbled out of the Bathysphere.

Aslong as it keeps the Plasmids, creepy atmosphere, Big Daddies and it has some kind of link to the first game, I'm good for it.
Being in the sky does look it would lower the chances of dark atmosphere which we were able to get with Rapture and It does look like we may get some platforming elements in there which doesnt work that well in an FPS. But still, it's only one trailer and I'll be perfectly willing to give this a try.

I'm looking forward to it, but I hope that it still captures the feel of the other games.

Sounds fantastic, a complete visual overhaul with familiar recouring Final fantasy type elements like Chocobos or airships

It's the only direction to take the series, Rapture as a location is creativly tapped out

Perhaps it should be called Bioshock 3: Sky of dreams

I like the idea, but feel it would be better if they changed the Bio for something different, in the way SystemShock became BioShock.

Then you could have as many games with as many amazing settings as you want, without losing the theme or being forced into a single timeline.
