The Loving Squid Flu
Lets face it, my writing usually sucks, so I put it in a nice format. But this time, I have something meaningful to say. I miss Swine Flu. Remember how overblown it was? And how suddenly it just seemed to stop after the vaccines were made? Well, I was genuinely hoping that this would be a pretty awesome flu, you know, the one that actually wasn't overblown. Nope.
Same thing happened with Mad Cow disease, Bird Flu, etc..
Almost all of them seem to affect animals that live on the farm.

Such a sexy squid

So, why no squid flu? Here we have an animal that in our fiction has been able to crush submarines with is massively awesome tentacles, and somehow manage to have sex with as many people as possible.

Only this should be an STD actually, now that I think about it, but I'd still like to see a disease that was caused by squids.

How about you, Escapists?

I don't believe in swine flu, bird flu, mad cow, or SARS. Living in America, I seriously believe it to just be a government hoax so people will pay for vaccines.

Sad that I think this? Sure. Will I change my mind anytime soon? Not a chance.

But what would be the transmission method... i fear to think.

Who really cares what the illness is named as long as I (or the people I care about) die or worse then I don't really give a shit.

See, the swine flu, bird flu, and others were because the influenza had genetic traces of those animals in them. So if you want a squid flu, you should figure out a way to incorporate squid genetic material into the influenza virus.

Go for it, dream big, do some studies, and you can have your dream virus.

Eh. I do believe they're real, but I do not believe they're dangerous. The swine flu caused less deaths than the regular flu, and it was only active for a very short time while the regular flu comes back every year. But you don't hear newscasters reporting about the regular flu like it's the next coming of the Black Plague...

If you get sick sucks to be you, but if you don't there's no reason to treat these 'pandemics' like they're anything special. The real danger is that people get fed up with this nonsense, and will ignore it when a real pandemic breaks out. It's a "boy who cried wolf" kinda deal.

On topic: I take it the OP is some kind of tentacle-hentai enthusiast? No thanks, I'd rather not have a squid STD.

Well, er, it's kind of hard for a disease from the water to get transported to the land-world. I mean, before the squid can send it's germs around, it dies of lack of air and can't cough to spread it.

That's another thing: Swine and Bird Flu are airborne. For a Squid Flu to evolve, it would evolve to be an water- not air -borne virus. I could see it somehow mutating to being an airborne virus, but that would take a few lifetimes.

Crab People Flu, on the other hand...

No more animal-themed flus! I'm getting tired of bird flu, avian flu, swine flu... uh... I remember there being another one... oh well. In fact, no more over-hyped doomsday plagues period! Remember SARS? Yeah, neither does anyone else but it was a pretty big freaking deal. They shut down Toronto because of it for goodness sakes!

Then how come everyone in my country was vaccinated for free?

As I cannot see what country you're from, I've no clue how to respond. Free healthcare covers fake illnesses too, correct?

I don't remember seeing anyone charging for the vaccine around Rochester.

It doesn't cover fake ones, no. But it does cover some of the imaginary ones.

But just so everyone knows, if the Squid Flu epidemic does hit, I'm siding with the squids. Coconuts and harpoon guns. Just sayin'.

Not free healthcare so much as they just decided to vaccinate the country. (Ireland)

So, what, they bought vaccines for everyone in the country, just because they could? Besides, was it even Americans the first discovered the swine flu? And even if your government did make it up, the rest of the world isn't stupid enough to just go along with it. Besides, how does the American government benefit from people getting vaccinated? If anything it would be a conspiracy on the part of the guys making the vaccine.

Maybe thats it.

Umbrella corp? Perhaps the governments of the world are taking steps to combat the virus early. Maybe swine flu was just a test sample of the virus. Doesn't seem so far fetched. Right? Right?
