The "winner" for this generation of consoles is debatably nintendo simply because they have sold the most units and made the most money. They did so because they appealed to the family market and made their console very cheap to make. In second, in terms of profits, come Microsoft, owing to their fairly insubstantial losses on the actual xbox and shameless milking of the prices of accessories such as wireless adapters and gold XBL membership. In third come Sony with their larger losses on consoles sold and more features that come with the actual console (meaning consumers don't have to buy them).
There are, of course, a host of other reasons behind how the most recent batch of console wars have turned out, but that's pretty much the basics.

Based on what was successful this time around, what do you think the three big players will attempt for their next iteration of consoles?

Personally, I think that Sony will go big time on the motion controls, 3D technology and family games, but will still have the most expensive console around.
I think Xbox will pretty much forget about kinect technology and will make the beefiest console in terms of processing power (a title previously owned by the PS3) whilst keeping the cost about the same as it is now. It will also hae blu-ray. The next nintendo will be a lot more geared towards core gamers but they will keep stocking and developing casual games for the old wii. They will put a lot more emphasis on the DS.

I hope there won't be a new console generation, or at least that the next will be the last one for about ten years or so. Because I'd rather stick with a slightly outdated console forever, rather than have to buy a new one every five years or so.

I forgot; I was going to ask when you think the next one should come out. I too hope it will be about 2016 when the next set of consoles come out, giving them a ten year lifecycle -- it has been going to fast imo.

I second that thought, the only system hardcore gamers are getting including casual would be the ds, making them win a lot of ppl. The new Microsoft console would get the BLUE RING OF DEATH (probable). And I swear Sony will make their ps4 equal in the 700 hundreds

I hope it's a good long while, because having to drop a mint every time I want to play recent titles is already old.

By sales there is no disputing your logic and who 'won'

I think the xbox lost because half of them didn't work and even after numerous fixing of them they still have an unacceptable failure rate. If a car had that kind of failure rate it would be under federal investigation....

Nintendo will win again because they're going to stick with the same strategy think up a gimmick, slap it on a last gen console, and make a bajillion dollars.

If they go with like a sphere shape, it'd be blue balls!

Or red balls.

Something testicles.

OT:

I dunno. I'd rather wait and see then just speculate wildly.

I hope a new gen comes out soon, there aren't enough graphically advanced games out these days that let me flex my gfx card.

Too early to tell. Nothing´s been announced yet.
We could be stuck with the current consoles for quite some time.

The entire thing is just media pandering by the companies to try and prove some sort of superiority. Kinda like the old compensation joke about how men drive muscle cars to make up for their embarrassingly small genitalia. Don't get roped in.

I hope they bring one out soon, or at least start having separate PC and consoles game development. Graphics tech and CPU specs have advanced so far beyond what current gen consoles are capable of, so if a new console doesnt come out soon, game development at the cutting edge will be kept artificially low as long as developers insist on being cross-platform in the way they currently do it. Yeah Im being selfish and frankly want to see the best for my preferred platform, but meh whatever.

Microsoft, they seem to have the slight edge at the moment and always seem to get the best things.

I've heard a rumor that if move and kinect fail, Microsoft and Sony already have another console generation ready. I really hope not.
I think Nintendo will win, as usual. But I will probably play my new Microsoft console the most.

Those poll results are quite unexpected; with the wii's ridiculous sales I'd have thought more people would've gone with nintendo...

Seeing as Nintendo have outsold both Sony and Microsoft combined, I'd have to go with Nintendo.

I honestly don't know, but I hope it's quite a while before we see a new generation of consoles. If it happens soon, I think it'll be too fast.

since nintendo seem to go for the cheap and cheerful thing and being aimed at everyone but people who play games more seriously they will inevitably have a larger range of people to sell to. also they have a hoard of people just waiting to buy the next mario. these mario games are being released like crazy and people are still willing to buy them

Microsoft are the most evil corporation. Given enough time, one way or another, they will win...

Well really the age group of the audience this site attracts is unfavorable for Nintendo in the polls, their largest market is far younger then can type hence not finding the wii remote embarrassing to use in front of people or where visible at all, like PS move and Kinect are as well. I think the next generation will be announced in the next two years, most likely through some over elaborate display at E3 or the Tokyo Games Show bragging up the capabilities of their ever more expensive machines.
I think the cost of the red ring of death bit Microsoft's profits in the ass a bit much for them to risk a repeat but with both Microsoft and Sony both having a lot more backing available from more diverse companies and deciding to dig into Nintendo's gimmick market, even if its a bit late, I would give it to a toss up between them. Just depends on who gets the best 3rd party support early on and just how expensive they are going to make them will determine who has the running start.

I'd expect the next Microsoft console to be announced in the next 2 years. The 360 is already falling behind when you compare it's power to some of the mid-ranged PC specs available cheaply today.

Microsoft had the best console this generation in my opinion, even once you factor in the massive failure rate of the 360. It had the best controller, by far the best online service, and a great library of exclusives and 3rd party games. I think Microsoft learned a lot about their place in the console race as time went on, kinda leaning towards being the go-to "hardcore" console in most people's minds. I think they ditch Kinect entirely and focus more on that next gen, or at least I hope they do.
