With gaming currently dominated by FPS and MMO's I was wondering what you think is next for the world of gaming?

In 2009 we are seeing the release of some new RTS games which are a major reboot to an old genre, it also seems this days that everything and it's dog has an MMO to it's name, we've also already been shown some very nice RPG's already in the form of games such as Oblivion,Fable 2 and Fallout 3, Or will FPS remain top dog on the selves for the rest of our grey and brown gaming lives?

Sorry about the whole only one option no-text thing should've been more careful.

some options would be good as well.

EDIT: Now that there's choices...FPS. The genre will never fall.

I wanna see more games like Battlefield or Wolfenstain, but on a larger scale, and perhaps set in medieval times, being able to play as knights or swordsman and compete in huge multiplayer battles :)

Yeah, I think that at some point they are going to try and make something with battles on the scale of something like SW Battlefront or Dynasty Warriors but with no AI, all players online.
Think about 300 players on either side, clashing... the lag would be horrible.

Modern Genres are evolving... FPSes now generally include their own unique offerings, sometimes. otherwise they get ignored

I'm hoping more good RPG's, but I think FPS will stand strong for quite some time.

Pretty much this. With graphics being pushed constantly, it's about time to put out something that really captures the grand scale of epic battles. Draw distance and the number of units that can be on a screen at one time would be critical to this.

I thought about something like that except in my fantasy world you could choose to play as the general in the thick of battle while pre-set army commands chosen by you are carried out by your troops, kind of like KUF:TC but without the need to swap to each platoon all the time.

I want to say RPG, but people are too consumed with their epically repetitive FPS's

I believe that there should be an MMO somewhere that is completely built off of player ideas and whatnot. Sort of a Guild Wars style thing(forces you to party up, and you adventure in the world by yourself), but updates weekly or so, and just gets bigger and better each time, because things are based on what players want.

Considering how successful the Halo trilogy was upon release (and still is) despite all the critisism it recieves on a regular basis from we, the gaming illuminatie, I don't think that the dominance of shooters is going to end any time soon.

I would like to see more arcade or Doom style shooters rather than just an endless stream of military shooters out there (a return to form would be a good thing for all of us in my humble opinion).

In the future, there will be more than 3 dominating genres.
[/wishful thinking]
If things keep following current trends, I will completely give up on gaming.

There's just too many mindless sheeple for our capitalist programmers to even think about originality.
To quote a Fairly Odd Parents cartoon episode: "In the future, everything will be sequels!!"
